In perhaps the most comprehensive autobiography of a gymnast on the market thus far, Kerri Strug details her life as an elite gymnast from her early memories all the way through the 1996 Olympics. Younger gymnasts (upper elementary school/middle school aged) will be able to understand the book, but the ideas contained will appeal to older readers as well.

Strug addresses her success, her aspirations, and most importantly, the difficulties of competing at the elite level. She talks openly about her eating disorder and problems with coaches. Strug also makes it clear that the person who pushed her hardest was her- not her parents, or her coaches. While Bela is known for pushing his gymnastics, Strug lets it be known that he never pushed her too far, and that it was her idea to perform the second vault.

Strug also addresses something that all gymnasts will understand: the frustrations. Not getting a certain score, not qualifying for something, or simply not progressing skill-wise are all common frustrations that any gymnast experiences. Most gymnasts will appreciate knowing that other people have gone through what they are currently going through. This is a great book for someone who is already familiar with gymnastics.

This book is so worth reading!!!!!!!

I do gymnastics and love to read about is so this book is great for me! This book is full of pictures and useful information. It has from when she was a baby to when she stuck that wonderful vault. If you are looking for a good gymnastics book or just a good book I would buy this one. If you do buy it I hope you enjoy reading it like I did!

I really enjoyed reading Kerri Strug's autobiography. Her legendery vault, the Yurchenko with a one-and-a-half twist, helped the USA 1996 Olympic Team win a gold medal! I really thought this was a terrific book. Kerri talks about her triumphs, struggles, victories, experiences and so much more. She tells her complete story, starting from baby years, all the way up untill after the 1996 Olympic Games. Her story is a great inspiration to all gymnasts. If you enjoy gymnastics or are a fan of Kerri Strug, then this book is a must-read!

Before I read this book, I didn't really know much about Kerri, except that she had hurt her foot doing a vault at the Olympics, and had somehow become America's darling.

But after reading this book, I now know Kerri for who she is: a marvelous gymnast who was always in the shadows and never seemed to pull everything together during competitions. How she came so close to making the All-Around competition in Barcelona, only to be edged out by .14 of a point.

This book will make you laugh, cry, and wonder how she could come back after injury upon injury and still continue gymnastics. This book will tell you about her joys and triumphs, and her defeats and despairs.

Since I have read this book, Kerri Strug has become my favorite gymnast, not just because of what she did at Atlanta, but what she did to get there. I promise you, if you read this book, you will be left with a profound respect of the girl who could continue on, despite the pain and setbacks.

My only recommendation is read it!

This is definitely the best gymnasics biography I've read! In this book, published right after the 1996 Olympics, Kerri really opens her heart to the reader...we learn about her passion for gymnasics which started at a VERY young age, her progression through the sport, what it was really like training under Bela Karolyi, and about her family. One thing that impressed me about Kerri was how she is truly self-motivated...I think many gymnasts are pushed by parents living their own dreams through their children, but this was NOT the case with Kerri. It was refreshing to read of the loving, supportive family she has, and how completely sane her parents are (as opposed to other gym parents we've heard about, like in "Little Girls in Pretty Boxes" which I also think is an important book). I think people who are THIS driven, as Kerri is, are incredibly rare...which is why she flourished under Bela's harsh training instead of cracking like so many other girls did. She is honest about the often-times brutal training under Bela, but obviously loves and deeply respects both him and Marta and she gives them credit for contributing to her successes. There are great photos included of Kerri through the years. Awesome!!

Yes, word of mouth is a good way to spread the word. I did a search here in Amazon of vampire books with good reviews, and this series was one of the first.
The bookstore I usually go to didn't have it, so I had them order it for me. They said it usually takes 2 weeks, so it was ok with me. 3 weeks passed when I went back & found it was never sent! Ugh! They did it again, but I was already planning to get it here. I say it's been already a little over 2 weeks since then & I haven't gotten a call that it has arrived!
No biggie! I ordered it here & I'm half way through & lovin' it!
If you are looking for vampire sex, so far there isn't any, but I haven't finished it, yet. But the story is great! And I read Hawkins is writing the third book. There's even comics!
So I put my 2 cents in! And recommend you get it here, since some major bookstores may not have it.

The novel is definitely a must-read for anyone who enjoys vampire tales. Blood Legacy is a completely different spin on the mythos, one that delves into the science behind immortality. While I have no way of scientifically proving or disproving her explanations for these creatures, I really enjoyed reading about them! It was a very fun book, completely action packed with great heroes and villains! I have already read the sequel and loved it and am eagerly waiting for more novels in this series!

Though the characters here are strong and their conflicts interesting, the book as a whole could have used an editor's strong hand - both for the smaller proofreading errors (streptococcus is described as a virus, and a character is shown knitting a quilt), and for the larger, clumsy moments (like switching the point of view between paragraphs, or providing exposition to the reader by having characters simply state what they know "for the record").

But by far the greatest error here was telling us "The Story of Ryan" without having Ryan as our main point of view character. The whole affair is told via a framing story about a doctor, whose concerns and subplots conveniently vanish once Ryan's storytelling gets into full swing.

This story has a lot of promise, filled with dramatic flourishes that would be perfectly at home in a cinematic medium. It's an easy, entertaining read - and one that I quite enjoyed - with good plot twists towards the end. Just be prepared to forgive a few foibles.

My children are 5, 4 and 2 and I can relate to many of the hysterical stories in this great book. I bought this book for myself because I thought it would be fun to read about adventures (misadventures) of other parents. When I got the book, I thought that it would make a great baby shower gift, too. Share this book with anyone who loves children - they'll thank you for it!

I love the short story format, its just enough to unwind after the kids go to bed, or down for a nap. The stories will make you laugh and smile, and will remind us all why we keep coming back for more!

This book is a must read for couples considering parenthood!

Children are, indeed, a gift from God but the reality of their being in one's life is something else all together. This book gives prospective parents a sneak preview of what their lives are about to become when a child becomes part of it. The misadventures and disasters make you smile in spite of the serious nature of some of them. I couldn't put the book down once I started.

The stories are written by everyday Moms and Dads. I was amazed that most of them had more than one child. None were discouraged with whatever story they were telling. They just wanted prospective parents to be aware of some of the possibilities that will more than likely arise when a child enters your life.

Can't wait for the sequel!

I am the mother of 4 children ranging in age from 15 to 8. The only way to retain my sanity and keep perspective is to find other parents who've "been there and done that" and found the humor in the most unusual or mundane circumstances. Misadventures of Moms and Disasters of Dads is the perfect book to relieve my stress and to make me remember that parenting is not only challenging, but down right hysterical! I read a story or two before bed to give myself another perspective on my crazy day!

I picked this up while wondering the racks and glad I did! This is a fabulous read --- It is the 2nd of 3, and I had not read the 1st, but had no problem following the story. I'm now going in search of number 1. Different from the Laurell Hamilton sex genre and the Anne Rice vampiric story lines --- (Love them both, BTW) --- but Kerri Hawkins offers something more contagious. Extremely interesting...

This book makes you think of all the dark thoughts you sometimes shouldn't have. Ryan gives the tale the realism that is scary and moving. You are drawn into her world wondering who is going to betray her, but she still makes you want to protect her from all that is happening around as you see the plots and you are shouting for her to watch out. Brilliant book by Kerri Hawkins another to carry on the story would be marvelous.

Blood Legacy is the follow up novel to The Story of Ryan. Ryan has been reunited with her father, Victor, and discovers that he has fallen prey to an unknown illness. Such an illness was thought impossible for their Kind as none of the eldest have ever died. Ryan calls on her human friend Dr. Susan Ryerson to unravel the mystery of his illness through Susan's knowledge of their unique anatomy. Meanwhile the Grand Council has been reconvened and they have chosen Ryan to conduct a Hunt. Not just any Hunt, this is a millennial purge to kill off the weaker offspring. Ryan must hunt and kill all of her kind that she can to strengthen the bloodlines.

Ryan begins to suspect that someone has betrayed her father and somehow infected him with the deadly illness. She will have to confront the most powerful of their Kind, including the darkly seductive Aeron who would like nothing better than to see her destroyed. Aeron is one scary guy who likes to seduce others of their Kind and consume their flesh. The other council members, Abigail and Marilyn, also want to possess her and set out to draw her in with their sensual charms. Ryan's vulnerability may turn out to be her greatest strength. As Ryan comes closer to the edge of death, giving in to her own desires may be the key to the survival of everyone she cares about.

This is another great book from Kerri Hawkins, her prose style brings the scenes to life with stunning visual imagery. Her vampires are a unique creation who insist that they are not vampires at all. They believe that vampire myth is actually based on their Kind. It will be interesting to see if Hawkins writes a book on Dr. Ryerson becoming one of their Kind. She also writes a comic book series called Blood Legacy that the novel is based on.

Waiting and Wondering? Then You Have To Read This

Review Date: 2008-05-26
For some reason, as a Christian single in her 20s, I have always been wary of reading books about single life. Maybe it's because they're aimed towards dating and preparing for marriage, or the never been married. I was single but I wasn't dating, and I wanted some reassurance and encouragement that I was doing the right thing, and I couldn't seem to find anything that spoke directly to my situation. But after I came across Kerri's book, I decided to buy it and I'm very glad I did. It's very different from all the other books out there in that it deals specifically with waiting for true love to come your way. I'm not sure why, but considering that waiting is so important for Christians and has a lot to do with faith, there seems to be nothing out there for singles which deals with this. 'If I'm Waiting on God...' is very honest in that Kerri asks many questions I've asked myself: 'What if I never meet The One? 'What if I've missed him? If I'm still not ready when will I ever be?' These questions are impossible to answer, and I can only assume given that practically every book geared towards singles tends to be about dating or never being married , that people are simply too scared to approach them. I am so thankful that Kerri wrote this book because otherwise I would probably still be wondering if I was the only Christian single in the whole world who had questions about how long I would have to wait. I found myself empathising with her in almost every chapter; especially when she voices her fears and insecurities in the chapters 'What If' and 'Sunday'. Even if we've never questioned God's ways and timing directly, I'm sure we've all felt overwhelmed by doubts and scared it just doesn't happen. This book is refreshingly honest, funny and very real. I wish more books aimed at single people were like this.

Having finished "No Immediate Threat", I find myself contemplating on what I did not know prior reading it. This book does a number of things for its readers. It tells the story of a Vietnam veteran and his family, all that they went through and how they felt at each turn. It shows the human side of a war that has been ignored for far too long. It gives us a glimpse of the trauma that Vietnam veterans experienced and carried with them throughout their lives. Many of these vets are still alive today, trying to cope, trying to understand a war that made no sense. This book opens eyes and touches hearts. It pulls one out of their comfort zone and shows what such a trauma can cause in the mind and soul of a veteran who survived the war but not the after shock.

Not every Vietnam veteran had a sister who perservered in telling his story, so in many ways Kerri Fivecoat-Campbell's book speaks for every veteran. All who survived brought home their memories, and all have struggled, in their own way, in reconciling what they experienced at war with what they experienced when they returned home. Veterans may find that this book gives a voice to thoughts they have not been able to express themselves. Non-veterans will gain a closer view of how to bring as many as possible "all the way home again."

I couldn't put the book down. Even though the reader knows the author's brother's fate, I wanted to watch the process unfold. The stories Fivecoat-Campbell tells about her family life are poignant. There were times when I laughed and other times I felt choked up. The author gives details that make us wonder about the military, the V. A. system and other veteran/military related institutions. It's not just a book about Vietnam. The information she divulges can be related to the Iraqi war today. I highly recommend this book.

I thought that Heart of Gold was a good biography based book for school aged kids. It was an easy read for the elementary early middle school kids and it had a good positive message throughout. Kerri talked about her struggles with not only gymnastics but being away from family, jealosy between teammates, and self doubt and insecurities that everyone has at some time in their lives. She teaches through her book that if you stay true to yourself, you will always win out in the end. I recommend this book to any gymnast who loves the sport of gymnastics.

This was a great biography of Kerri Strug, though it was meant for a younger audience and reading level, it was still very appealing. It included many great pictures, and her biography. I think all Kerri Strug fans will enjoy the book, nevertheless how old they are. Great book, awesome pictures!
