I have the fondest memories of this book, and I was delighted to recently find a copy.

It's the ultimate "power tool" book that should please young boys--an old time steam shovel with a personality to boot that is out to prove she can still do her thing.

The drawings are detailed and gorgeous, and the end shall always be a classic.

Death of a Steam Shovel
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-05-07
Mr. Michael Mulligan and his faithful steam shovel, lovingly called Mary Anne, are working class heroes, fighting to retain their independence in the face of corporate technological prowess in the construction industry. Can outmoded steam power compete with the awesome strength of diesel? Conveniently, this book features paper (not plastic) pages, so your tot can decimate the images of the vile diesel shovels with all the rage that his or her small hands can muster. Don't' be upset about this, it's nothing a roll of clear packing tape can't fix.

Much like the story of Casey Jones, vindication of our heroes will require their demise. Tasked with one final job, the digging of the basement for a fancy town hall, Mike and Mary Anne find themselves trapped by the tremendous success of their labor. Unable to get out of the hole, Mary Anne is broken down to be made into a boiler for the new building, and Mike becomes the janitor. This is no happy ending. No longer are Mike and Mary Anne independent contractors, free to come and go as they please. Mary Anne's steam-powered feet have been bound, like a disobedient concubine. And Mike has become a low-ranking servant of the state, forever forced to feed coal into the mutilated form that was one his industrial lover. The life lesson here is that it doesn't matter if you are honest and hard-working. In fact, those are disadvantages. The only winners are the diesel shovels, destroying without remorse.

Good for tykes who like to play with blocks and toy trucks. Might as well let them know what they're in for.

Based on reviews of others, I decided to order the Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary. My son in high school has been very pleased. We have discovered that a few of your more basic words are missing. (This is the only thing that stops me from rating it at 5 stars.) You may want to keep one of the 'cheap' dollar store versions as a back-up for these words. It is well worth the investment. You could easily spend just as much on 3 or 4 other dictionaries and still not get what you need.

An old folk poem

Review Date: 2008-10-27
I remember hearing this poem long ago and was surprised to find it in book form.

This is a fun little book. It has a nice little rhyme story about an old lady who eats a fly then goes about eating other creatures to get the previous creature.

In the end you have a valuable moral! Never swallow a horse!

The artwork makes the book fun. The goofy expressions of the old lady and the page cut out design which allows readers to see what she has in her stomach.

About the only thing to be wary is the question of death. There is the repeated phrase "Perhaps she'll die" and in the end the old lady dies. If your child doesn't understand death, you might might avoid or have the explanation ready for the question.

Overall it's a fun book and I had to read it a few times for my daughter.

I remember this poem in song form from my childhood. I hadn't thought of it in years, until my grandson told me his teacher had read it to him in his pre-k class. I was delighted to find this book on Amazon.com. I was thrilled to see it's large size, bright colors, crazy pictures, the old lady's stomach expanding to accomodate each new animal. I wasn't bothered (as a child) by the phrase "perhaps she'll die," but I imagine my grandson will enjoy some of the "asides" that rhyme with "die." This book will be a gift to my grandson for his fourth birthday in a few days. I am looking forward to reading it to him! Or should I say, singing it to him!!

This is a book I thoroughly enjoyed as a child. I began to borrow it from the library for my own two boys and decided, finally, to order one from Amazon for my son's birthday. We returned the borrowed book to the library the day before his birthday and there were many tears. So, you can imagine my son's elation to open up his very own "Little Engine That Could" on his birthday. A fantastic book! There is also a newly released version with gorgeous illustrations. Check that one out as well. Great books are one of the greatest gifts you can give your children.

Great, classic story! Good for negative children who are always saying "I can't."

The story itself is great-- I like sharing its meaning with the little "I can't do it" children who are in my life. Children seem to like the pictures in this book. However, the quality of the binding is not as great as I hoped it would be-- it's already starting to pull apart after just several readings.

Love it. My kids love it. We first saw this book in a larger version at our pediatrician's office and we read it while waiting to be seen. My daughter loved it so much that I looked it up as soon as we returned home. The story is so well known, I won't even bother to rehash it. Even though I think I can... (A little humor there)

As usual, the visual component is very important as far as I'm concerned and the vintage art is fabulous. It reminds me of things I saw while cleaning up my grandparents' house. Left behind story books and toys from my mother and her sister. Very nostalgic.

This particular version of the book is quite small which I like, but my daughter wants a larger version. I believe it is available in a lager size here at Amazon.

Nobody puts out a better dictionary than Merriam-Webster. The Collegiate is my pick because one of my hobbies is the Over-50 Spelling Bee, and this dictionary is the reference source for that competition. The Elementary edition is what I use in my classroom. The Unabridged is what I subscribe to on the Web. I wouldn't buy any other company's dictionary because this book and its publisher can trace their roots back to the original Noah Webster who first recognized the uniqueness of American English.

We are big Skippyjon Jones fans in this house but this book simply did not live up to our expectations. The story line is difficult to follow, one comment says if you study the illustrations things make sense, my children love to linger on pages looking at the illustrations but this book simply jumps from one scenario to the next and is confusing at times and not easy to follow. My six year old asked "how long more until the end?". A fun series to read, this book however, was just a dud.

Funny, goofy book!
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2008-05-02
This is our first Skippyjon book and quite frankly, it's funny. You HAVE to read it with a Spanish accent to really get the "jist" of the rhyme and my guy laughs silly over it. This goofy cat longs to be a chihuahua and after drawing a million of them on a newly painted wall, his mother sends him off to his room to think "siamese." My complaint, which is why I gave it a 4 instead of a 5, is that there is a point in the story where his mother tries to correct him and Skippyjon yells back, "you're not the boss of me!" Honestly, why was THAT necessary in this book? Doesn't add a thing to the story but shows a favorite character talking back to his mother. Not the best idea. Other than that, it's just plain silly, makes no sense whatsoever, making it the perfect "giggle" book for youngsters. Skippyjon Jones pretends he's a chihuahua superhero who saves the day for a bunch of chihuahuas in chihuahua land, by taking out a Siamese cat bobblehead toy that they're all deathly afraid of, from the attic in the chihuahuas' doghouse. To get "Skippito" up to the attic, they roll him up in a flour tortilla and "bounce" him on up. That was pretty funny! He stuffs the bobblehead into his superhero costume and then slides down the bannister into the tortilla. He's wrapped up again in the tortilla as the superhero of the day. If you have boys, be sure to get these goofy books - they really like this cat a lot! Recommend but with the above reservation.

A Sympathetic Underdog

Review Date: 2008-10-25
Hooway for Wodney Wat tells the story of a poor little rat named Rodney who suffers from a common speech problem, he pronounces his Rs as Ws. Poor Rodney is teased at school, isolated, and shy. One day things at school turn from bad to worse. First Camilla Capybara comes to town and she claims to be "Bigger than any of you, meaner than any of you, and smarter than any of you!" On top of being picked on by the horrible new bully, Rodney is selected to lead a game of Simon Says. Tiny and trembling, Rodney buries his face in his jacket and begins squeaking out the game's orders. But Camilla Capybara, new to the school, doesn't know about Rodney's speech impediment and begins following orders as she hears them. Read becomes Weed, Wrap become Wap, and Rest becomes West. Rodney's speech saves the day as Camilla Capybara leaves, never to bully the students of P.S. 142 again. And Rodney, the unlikely hero, is the one who has saved the day.

Lester presents a story that will have all audiences rooting for the timid underdog. Rodney is sympathetic while remaining relatable to children who have been picked on, or who have bullied. Munsinger's watercolor illustrations perfectly highlight the story, personifying the cute, fuzzy characters, capturing varied emotions and hilarious actions, as well as creating a vivid rodent world around them. In the end, Lester and Munsinger work well together to create a story that teaches tolerance between children, the idea that no one likes a bully, and that even the kids who feel shy or different, should stand up proud, and not be ashamed of what makes them special.

Helen Lester's Hooway for Wodney (Houghton Mifflin Company, 1999), is a fun tale of a little rat with a problem. Wodney, or Rodney, has a speech impediment, and he can't pronounce his r's. His classmates, who ask him to pronounce words like "bunny" and "train", tease Rodney daily. Readers will surely feel for Rodney, who is so tormented by the bullying that he eats lunch alone and hides at recess. One day, a new student by the name of Camilla Capybara shows up, and she is the biggest, meanest, and smartest rodent in Rodney's classroom. Rodney wonders if she will tie him up with his own tail, or maybe even pounce on him. Rodney and his classmates are understandably upset by the new addition of Camilla, but a routine game of "Simon Says" and Rodney's cleverness turns the tables. With humorous illustrations by Lynn Munsinger, Hooway for Wodney is a triumphant tale of a shy little rat who becomes a hero.

Poor Wodney. Wodney Wat. Rodney Rat is a rodent who can't pronounce his r's in the picture book "Hooway for Wodney Wat," by Helen Lester (Houghton Mifflin Company, 1999). Because his classmates tease him day in and day out, Rodney has become the shyest rodent in school, he has the softest squeak in class, he eats his hunk of cheese alone, and he buries his head in his jacket during recess. When Camilla Capybara comes to P.S. 142 Elementary School for Rodents and declares she is the biggest, meanest, and smartest, all the rodents tremble with fear, especially Wodney. What will Camilla do if she hears Wodney speak? Tie him up with his own tail? When Wodney is picked to be the leader of Simon Says, Wodney's nightmare becomes reality. But to his surprise, his speech impediment turns him from shy squeaker to classroom hero. Young readers will enjoy the cute and playful illustrations and laugh with the word play of the text. Any young reader who has ever been teased or bullied will find this book a satisfying and uplifting read and will be most certainly be cheering "Hooway for Wodney Wat! Woot! Woot! Wooty-toot-toot!"

Wodney suffers from a common problem - he says w instead of r. That in and of itself should have been okay, but he's shown being teased mercilessly by the other students. No adult notices and steps in, even when he's unable to speak up in class and either totally ostracised or - slightly better - so shy from this treatment that he avoids the other rodents entirely and never even pokes his head out of his jacket.

This is realistic enough - unfortunately - but that doesn't make it pleasant for me to read to my nieces.

When a new bully comes and bullies the rest of the class, they don't learn the moral lesson "Bullying people isn't fun". Instead, Wodney turns her ignorance of his disability against her. The children laugh at her, and she runs off. "And they lived happily ever after and never teased him again." Of course, if he hadn't been able to use his Special Skill to help him then the other students would have continued to tease him, right?

It's a very unsettling moral message, and not one I really like.

Munsinger's expressive watercolors give the comical rats depth and personality. A great help for children with speech problems. How not being able to pronounce r's and being teased about it can turn into an asset. Wodney ends up saving his whole class from Camilla Capybera who is smarter, bigger and meaner than the other students. She takes him literally when he gives her and the group directions to wake(rake) the leaves and go west(rest)and she leaves in that direction. This turns Wodney into a hero.

I use this dictionary quite a bit as it is small enough to be light and easy to carry and big enough to contain most everyday words. I think that the content is good but I compared to my other (larger) dictionary by Harper Collins the paper is somewhat gray and the words don't stand out as well. Also the ink is not the most permanent so if you are not careful you can end up with gray stains on your fingertips. I would recommend spending slightly more to get something with a higher quality of paper and printing.

I ordered the Scholastic Children's Dictionary for my third grader. When it arrived, he wanted to look at it, and couldn't put it down. It was interesting to him and well illulstrated.

I purchased a number of dictionaries to be used by all the students in a small school. The entries included pronunciation, syllabication, and multiple definitions. They are visually pleasing and thorough enough for third and fourth graders.
