This is a great resource for a large classroom or a small homeschool. I love the activity to write to a "chocolate factory". I used this book in a private school that I taught at a few years ago and ordered it this year for my own homeschool.

Very thorough and helpful!

I used this literature guide with my 6th grade English class. I found it to be a great help in really making the book a great joy for the students. The activities that were included in the book were easy to accomplish in one period and with basic materials.

A couple of my favorite activities from the book were "Create Your Own Golden Ticket" and "Writing a letter to a candy company" (Addresses for 5 different companies were given.) The kids wrote their letters and received some free things in the mail within a few weeks.

This book also comes with Chocoholic Recipes and Unit Tests. I found it to be a great companion for any teacher reading "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory".

Test Prep Through Great Literature!

Although I had never heard of this author or publisher, I took a chance and cannot be more excited about the quality of materials! There is everything in this book! From a simple biography plus reading questions about Shakespeare, an Anticipation/Reaction guide (which the kids loved!), literary terms to know (and their definitions), lessons on iambic pentameter and the sonnet form, a (doable) vocabulary list, scene guides for tracking the action and plot of the play, focus activities for each act, vocabulary exercises, test preparation, quizzes for each act (including vocabulary quizzes!), a final test, a summary of the play act by act, and pre-reading and post-reading activities! This is by far the most valuable guide I have ever seen for teaching high school students the complicated and often intimidating world of Shakespeare. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

I cannot express enough how valuable this literature guide is. I have been teaching for over ten years now, and I have NEVER found a piece of gold like this! Whether you are a new teacher or an experienced pro, you want to have a life. This guide has everything I need to teach Hamlet--and more. Mrs. Bowers has done all the work for me. It begins with an author biography and questions to go along with the biography, pre-reading activities to choose from, vocabulary list (in bite-size pieces!), "Standards Focus" activities which specifically focus on the content standards for 11th and 12th grade. It then has vocabulary activities, fun activities to review the vocab, quizzes, a test, and other ideas for testing. With all this, I can sit back and acutally teach for a change.

This book will help anybody become acquainted with the rules and history of the Hordes universe, a popular product line from Privateer Press. It displays the models and rules for each of the four playable factions and then adds a rich back story to each model that meshes well with the overall feel of each faction. An excellent buy.

Awesome Wargaming Book

So if you are reading this, you most likely already know a bit about what this sort of book is all about. If not, here is the short and dirty. You move little painted metal miniatures around on a table, roll some dice and see if your guys kill your friend's guys. Doesn't that sound like fun? It is! So this book is packed with awesome characters and stories. This isn't Joe Blow mountain man controlling a few dogs and troops. Every character, unit, beast, and solo has a story. Some are larger than others, but there is meat behind it all.

Privateer has become successful, many people say, because of their awesome rules. They create an exciting atmosphere for these battles and create so much flexibility. If you play Warmachine, you already know the majority of the rules. You have to learn about the fury mechanic to really get the full grasp, but that's about it.

I've heard of people who don't even wargame buying this book and loving it. It just has so much cool stuff in it, I guess you just have to flip though it to find out.

I shop with my 3-year-old daughter. She loves this book, and I also like it a great deal. The pictures are detailed enough to give us tangents for conversation -- we talk about what she'd like to buy next time we go shopping. I've even used the cashier page to start talking with her about money, and why I go to work (so we can pay for things we want to buy). And as the previous reviewer noted, it provides an awfully good role model, when the little girl puts treats back on the shelf!

Both Kids Love This Book!

My four year old and two year old both love this book. The text is simple and rhyming, allowing both of them to "read" it as well. The story follows a girl shopping with her father, occasionally picking up a treat. Her father says "Not Today" and she "puts it away". Imagine my delight at the toy store when my son threw a package on the counter. "Not today," I told him. "So I put it away," he responded and put it on the shelf! My kind of literature that influences life!

Great book on Japanese dollmaking

Review Date: 2008-05-16
This book may be the best one I have purchased in over a year, on any subject.I am so happy to have it in my collection. Photography is excellent, and if you are an artist/dollmaker, the inspirational element is fantastic. Historically, the book is loaded with info that is fascinating.I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in dollmaking as I am,and who finds Asian artifacts refreshingly different on an artistic basis. What a great book! If you love dolls, this is a must have,You will not be dissappointed!

A serious look at Japanese dolls

Alan Pate's second book on Japanese dolls gives the occidental reader a real understanding of the Japanese doll within the context of Japanese culture. The work would be cheap at 2X the price. The photographs are stunning and worth the price of admission. For the collector serious or casual this (and his earlier work, Ningyo) are all one needs.
Most highly recommended.

I'm looking forward to having the whole year's set eventually!

Kids Inventing is Terrific!!!!

I really love Kids Inventing!, THE handbook for young inventors. Written by that expert on invention (also see author Susan Casey's excellent book, Women Invent!), this is a book about inventions by kids, and it's written to be read and used by kids.
Easy to read, full of first-rate practical advice, with lots of good photos and charts, this book will be especially useful not only for all those young inventors out there, but also for their teachers. I'm a teacher myself, and am always on the lookout for books that encourage children to think big, to explore what could be, to use their imagination...and Kids Inventing! is exactly this kind of inspiring book.
The advice on patents and trademarks alone is well worth the price of the book. There is a great deal too, of interesting history throughout. The sections on awards, invention fairs, science fairs, contests, camps...all of these add to the completely practical aspect of Kids Inventing! Author Casey guides the reader step-by-step, always encouraging, always guiding with a sure hand.
Kids Inventing! is sure to be a big hit with the brightest, highest achieving students....but I believe that it will also be of plenty of interest to most kids. This one ought to be in every school library...shot it ought to be in all the classrooms! Highly recommended.

Every library needs Kids Inventing!

The talented artist, Demi, has outdone herself in this latest book. It's a wonderful showcase of beautiful and brightly colored chinese kites incorporated into a story of chinese traditions that children can understand and appreciate. Imagine my daughter's surprise when she saw several kites in this book identical to those we have hanging on our walls at home. I highly recommend buying this book!

Another awesome book by Demi!

Solve puzzles to find the amulet.
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2006-03-14
This is actually a side story to the Knight's Kingdom books, with puzzles to solve. The amulet is stolen from Sir Santis' castle (he's the red knight).
You solve word, number, or other kind of puzzles and put the results together to find the amulet.
My kindergartner needed assistance with many of the puzzles, but enjoyed the process thoroughly; probably a second-grader could do them alone. Now we just read through the story with our already-solved clues.
A very fun book for a Knight's Kingdom enthusiast.
