Preparing a Young Child for Standardized Tests
Helpful Votes: 16 out of 16 total.

Great presentation - pages are not busy and the font is the appropriate size.

Great organization - begins by telling parents what to expect (i.e. children in K-2 are not usually required to fill out scantron forms and they must be good listeners to perform well on the tests). Also provides instruction and practice opportunities for developing your child's listening and guessing skills before diving into tests that are focused on the basic skills. In addition to the standard basic skills (language arts and mathematics), this book covers science, social studies, and computer/technology.

This is a great book for preparing a young child for his first standardized test. It worked well for preparing my 5 year old son (1st grader). The content in this book works well for a first grader who attends a school that uses second grade textbooks.

It tells parents what in the standard tests and provides instruction and exercise for developing your child's listening and choice eliminating skills before diving into tests on the basic skills. In addition to ELA and math, this book also touches base on science, social studies, and technology.

We liked it very much and hoped the book would last longer. To continue the learning, we found a nice Houston community web site (http://www.beestar.org) that offers similar practice every week. My child's skills as well as knowledge are improved significantly from such test prep practices. Highly recommend.

This fantastic book filled with eye popping and colorful photo's of all the novelty and classic collectable radios had me enthralled. The discriptive information for each one was clear and concise and the arty background for each radio subject was excellent. Wim Meter deserves a big hand for his efforts.

Extremely well planned and executed!

The author of this book used extraoridnary care in the selection and placement of each of the items he has shown in this book. In total agreement with the excellent evaluation provided by Robin Benson above, I find Wim's use of appropriate backgrounds on which to superimpose photos of his radios, to be superb. For example, on pages 100-101 three different Stage Coach radios are depicted (along with another, of "The Duke") all superimposed on the background of very rugged, mountanous, terrain which could easily depict Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, or some other desert type of environment. Not only are the radios shown and described, Wim has included various tidbits of information relative to the "time and place". Also of particular interest is his placement of the midevial "Armored Knight" radios, displayed along with period weaponry, all displayed in the surroundings of an actual, and still standing, Castle. Many anecdotes of interest, along with photos regarding the radios, weaponry, and the Castle, itself, are included. I feel this book would be of interest to ANYONE, but particularly to those who collect novelty radios, crystal radios, music boxes, or jukeboxes. It's definitely a book you will enjoy!

Wim Meter lives in Holland and collects novelty radios. He's a graphic designer so it seemed the obvious idea to design the book featuring his collection. From my experience publishers of books for collectors turn out uniformly dull looking titles with bland layouts, photos and typography so it was refreshing to see how the author presented his collection.

The book is all in color and most spreads are devoted to a particular type of radio, pages twenty-four and five has twenty fast food products, seventy-eight and nine shows radios with a Dick Tracy theme, ninety-six and seven has slot machine and juke box radios but what makes this book so fascinating and in my view lifts it out of the ordinary is that all the radios are photographed as a still-life group or they are superimposed on a spread wide image that relates to the items shown, detailed captions and intriguing bits of information are scattered amongst the images.

Visually this really is a stunning book and if you collect or are interested in novelty radios (and there must be some hundreds included) it is the one to get. Design, photography, printing and especially editorial content can't be beat.

Barbara Mariconda presents an excellent step by step practical writing guide. Between this book and her other teaching book "The Most Wonderful Writing Lessons Ever" you have most of your lesson plan done for you - I have used them both over and over again to put together writing lessons. They are geared for the primary levels but are usable with a few changes for many grade levels.

This book has everything you need except the folders to hold the sheets. It has colorful cover pages and easy to understand directions. The answer sheets are reproducible. Several of the centers have multiple components so they can be completed more than once without duplication. It has enough centers for a classroom.

As a homeschooling mother of 4 children I value Language Arts. Once again Evan Moor has done a wonderful job making language fun. In addition many content areas are covered in an innovated way. All illustrations are in full color and allow the children to work independently with pride at the finished product. Excellent compliment to our existing program.

I totally LOVE this product. They are time consuming to make up BUT well worth it.Once the centers are made up, they are easy to maintain. I would highly suggest laminating the pieces. I did and they have held up very well. My students loved doing them. I would recommend for any teachers. Many times I used these as a reward for getting work done in class early. Students were able to pick what they wanted to do after completing their assignments.

endless pleasure for parents and children

A beautiful book for children! There are elements of surprise and the children have the opportunity to look for toys that are hiding. Penny Dale is so clever to leave a paw poking out here or an ear there to raise the children's imagination as to what animal is hiding. Children can learn the names of different toy animals and it teaches children to count as well. then, who is still missing? buy this book and parents will have endless hours of fun ... and the kids too! what a lovely book to cuddle up and share with your children and you will never tire of it.

A great bedtime book, it shows a toddler getting ready for bed by playing hide-and-seek with a playful collection of stuffed animals. Your child will enjoy the search for his hidden friends and you can help by giving clues! The story is also a wonderful way to introduce your toddler to numbers and counting. A nice companion to "Ten Out of Bed", also by Penny Dale.

Very age-appropriate theme activities including art, songs, and activities for ages 1-1/2 to 3. For instance, there is a section on cotton balls including songs about cotton balls, a game with cotton balls, and art activities using cotton balls. Very simple ideas that anyone can use, parents or teachers, using inexpensive materials.

This is a wonderful guide for anyone who is into collecting Corgi toys. I especially enjoyed the value guide in the back even though this book was published 10 years ago.My only disappointment was that the author didn't put more information about the "Character" cars which I am so fond of collecting.
