I have been using this book this year in first grade. The children are not only seeing, hearing and writing the words, they are also getting a mini handwriting lesson. We use the poems for shared reading and they can take them home that day and read them to their family.

Great Timesaver!

I always search for poems that reinforce the sight words we introduce and this does just that. I type and put it in their homework notebooks to work with for the week. Although I have quite a collection of poems I have used, this has been a nice addition and saves time when looking for support of specific words. I have not used the pages as they are written, to have children write the word in the spaces, but I'm sure others would find it useful. I have purchased way too many teaching resource books that go unused but this one is well worth the price! Great for kindergarten and grade 1!

your kid fills the same word several times in the same page, in several different short and simple sentences. It does not feel repetitive to kids. A good product, among the best in these scholastics "poetry ...sight words" books. The others, I did not get the point, and neither did my son's teacher. This book is a safe purchase.

This book was exactly what I was looking for as a substitute teacher. I am often in a class that has a special needs child in it and it is so nice to be able to communicate directly with the child rather than working through their aide. It gives me exactly the phrases I need, not too many. It is a great tool for me.

This was purchased for a 7 yr old who was learning sign in school because there were a couple of hearing impaired children in her class and she wanted to be able to talk with them. She has learned much from this book in a short time. She now teaches her grandmother and "tests" her on what she has learned.

I purchased this book to use as a text for my daughter to learn sign as her foreign language. The illustrations are very easily understood, and as the title suggests, pertains to the average school day. The chapters include: Finger Alphabet, Asking Questions and Getting Answers, Courtesies and Greetings, Giving Direction, and Words Around School. This book would make an excellent resource for teachers and students alike to learn how to communicate with a hearing-impaired classmate. We look forward to more titles being added to this series.

I purchased this book to augment the Creative Learning curriculum I use in my preschool room and was not disappointed. Simple Signing with Young Children is a WONDERFUL, pertinent, practical guide to incorporating ASL into your classroom. Carol Garboden Murray did a great job at introducing ASL concepts and explaining the basics to someone like me: a preschool teacher interested in adding sign language to our everyday routine. The pictures are great: lots of them and easy to reference. The photos include the person and their facial expression, which is such a key element to learning...instead of just pictures of the hand demonstrating each sign.
The author also does a great job a explaining variations on the signs and how children typically adapt them to their developmental level. Her chapter on Sign Language for Babies is particularly thorough. Because of my background, I was most interested in her chapters for toddlers and incorporating ASL into the classroom. I was so excited to learn songs, fingerplays, and signs for classroom routines (like story time and "five more minutes to play"). There is also an index of signs at the back of the book for easy reference. I cannot say enough about what a great resource this is. Our preschool has currently ordered another copy to keep on hand as a resource for all of our teachers at the center.

In "Simple Signing With Young Children: A Guide For Infant, Toddler, And Preschool Teachers", preschool teacher, special education instructor, early interventionist, parent educator, nursery school and childcare director, and sing language workshop presenter Carol Garboden Murray draws upon her more than 17 years of experience and expertise to write a thoroughly 'user friendly' instruction manual for parents, teachers, and care-givers to teach very young children how to communicate through sign language. Detailed photographs aptly demonstrate how to execute each sign while written directions provide a methodical and step-by-step guide for educators and parents. Comprehensive, authoritative, and superbly organized, "Simple Signing With Young Children" is the ideal introductory instruction manual and very highly recommended for anyone having to teach sign language to very young children at home, in a daycare center, or a community preschool program.

This is one of 3 books written by author Robert Schleicher. This title covers advice on building cars, race tune cars, driving techniques, building scenery, organizing races, etc.

This book has several b&w photos but they should have been colour.

For anyone starting out with Slot Cars this is the first book you should consider.

If you have caught the slot car bug, this book should be a must have to get you up to speed. It has a nice selection of track designs that span across all current track manufactures(There is also a chapter for those wanting to create permanent tracks).

You can tell Robert Schleicher has been active in the hobby since the beginning. His descriptions and writing style are easy to understand. As well as up to date.

He goes into custom modification of tracks, and is appropriately detailed without boring you into a coma.

The only ding that I can give the book is it's frequent use of black and white photographs. The book uses heavy, quality paper throughout. All color pictures would have been nice.

Good book. Well worth the price

This test prep was excellent. It covered more material than what was covered in my son's class. My son just took his ELA Exam so I'm hoping that he did well, thanks to this book. I am now going to begin the math section to prepare him for the math test in March. I highly recommend it.

Lots of good stuff!

My 3rd grader and I used this book for the NYS ELA test. It helped a lot. I could really see him improve. I would choose a few pages for him to do at each sitting, and he'd do them on his own. The real learning came when we would correct the work and go over his mistakes together. By the end, he was getting very few questions wrong.

It's 200 pages. The first half is devoted to language arts reading/writing, and the second half is math. There are many practice tests that are very similar to the actual NYS ELA. We did the language arts sections and then he took the ELA test. Now we're going to start on the math section to prepare for the NYS math test which comes up in a couple of months.

We've used a lot of workbooks, all of which I've chosen very carefully, and I can tell you that this is a great one if you're looking to prepare your child for a standardized test.

The "Spectrum New York Test Prep for Grade 4" is an excellent test book for getting children used to doing tests, for revision of their work, and for helping a teacher or parent to find out a child's weak points in English and Maths. The tests are of a high standard to challenge children to work to their maximum potential.
I'm an Australian private tutor, teaching English and Maths to children after school. I find the Spectrum test books really help me to spot the gaps in a child's education, so that we can work from there.
I use many American textbooks and workbooks, especially in English, because I find them superior to most books I can buy in Australia. It's great being able to get online to Amazon and order brilliant books like the "Spectrum Test Prep" books.

This book did an outstanding job of preparing my child for the state test. It gives clear, concise reviews for the test scope and provides drills for each topic. The problem items are very similar to those in the real test. I wish it were thicker. For additional practice, we found Beestar very useful (www.beestar.org). My child scored fairly high thanks to such like-real standard test drills.

I have read this book during story time for YEARS. There are other versions of the Teeny Tiny Woman out there, but Galdone's has, to me, the best pacing and rhythm. Like so many of his versions of basic fairy tales, he gets the job done simply and well. I often read this book early in October as an introduction to the "scary stories" that will follow later in month. When I read this book aloud I use the "voices" as the kids say, with a teeny tiny squeaky voice for the woman and a moaning spooky voice for the ghost, so that by the time the last page comes the students are enthralled. Then, at the end, when the teeny tiny woman says in her biggest teeny tiny voice--scream the words "TAKE IT!!!! They'll jump out of their seats. And then they will laugh and laugh. This book is always a hit.

If you've ever been to a slumber party you've probably heard someone tell this spooky-fun tale. Illustrator Paul Galdone gives the royal treatment to this classic story of a teeny-tiny woman out on a teeny-tiny walk who finds herself a teeny-tiny bone and thinks of making a teeny-tiny pot of soup for herself. Humour and suspense in generous amounts follow the events that spiral out from her one simple act of bringing the bone home. The silly surprise ending is classic slumber-party fare...eek! This is a good story for around Halloween time due to its bedtime suspense and ghostly plot. Be sure to share this one with a new generation of kids. It's sure to be loved.

This is not just a book about toy cap pistols, it is a time machine. Not only does Mr. D'angelo present the cap pistols of our youth but he reveals the actors who played the part on television. A fact filled, exhaustive research of a love he shares with us. I had forgotten many of the toys he describes. Each page brought back memories of a childhood where honor and truth was the spoken word of the cowboy. So fans of the 50's and 60's westerns, return to those thrilling days of yesteryear when all boys wore their six shooters with pride and rode into the sunset.....

D'ANGELO HAS BROUGHT A WEALTH OF PERSONAL KNOWLEDGE AND WARMTH ON THE SUBJECT INTO HIS WRITING; HE HAS COMPLETELY AND EXHAUSTIVELY RESEARCHED THE BACKGROUNDS OF ALL OF THE CHARACTERS AND THE WEAPONS, AND DISCUSSES THEM WITH OPEN FAMILIARITY. FOR THOSE RAISED DURING THE 50'S AND 60'S, THIS IS A TRIP DOWN TV AND THE MOVIES'S MEMORY LANE. THIS BOOK IS OBVIOUSLY A LABOR OF LOVE, AND IT TRULY SHOWS. A GREAT ADDITION TO ANY COLLECTOR'S LIBRARY, AND GREAT FOR THE NOSTALGIA BUFFS!

This book gives good ideas for toys to make at home and gives some good description of children's play at different stages. The main problem I have is that I have never carved wood and there are no directions on how to actually carve. I would like to make some of the wooden toys, but I will need to do more research beyond this book to actually be able to carve the wooden toys. So, I guess I'm saying, if you have a base knowledge in sewing and carving, this book is very good....if not, you will need to do some other research in addition to this book.

It lists some toys that are appropriate for each age group and goes on to describe how to make a number of toys. The ideas i found to be very enlightening, and I so look forward to making some of these wonderful toys! Oh and this book has a waldorf slant to it. An excellent find!

This book is a revised and expanded edition of the original book titled "Making Soft Toys" which was published in 1981. The author is a Waldorf Kindergarten teacher. This book discusses the importance of play as seen through a Waldorf education perspective and explains that natural playthings from nature and toys made from natural products are important. The book opens with several essays on the subject of the value of play and the nature of (appropriate) play as seen through the eyes of a Waldorf educator. Simple toys that allow imaginative and creative play are defined as ideal and appropriate for the proper development of the child. The author states that toys made by hand are more appreciated by children and she urges parents to make toys by hand, with the child's help or the child watching. A listing of toys appropriate for different age groups is listed. Discussion about outdoor play, play with dolls, and clean up time is included. Full instructions for over 45 toys are provided. Toys include dolls and doll clothing, knitted animals, wooden playstands and cloths, wooden tree blocks, and carved wooden toys (bridges, animals, spoons, etc.). Using wool roving is explained and instructions for creating pictures with plant-dyed wool end the book. The book is 93 pages long and the instructions are detailed and illustrated with line drawings. If you enjoy crafts and want to make Waldorf-style toys, this book is a must and a good value. Of course you can buy many of these toys already made, but you would save a lot of money by making these yourself.

This is a guide to the many items produced with the Scottie Dog (Scottish Terrier)image. The Scottie's heyday was in the 1930's when the registration with the AKC was at it's highest. Also in this same era, U.S. President, Franklin Roosevelt had a Scottish Terrier named Fala, who was world famous. Therefore a large amount of items were produced with the likeness of the Scottie in the past, and of course in the present as well. This book has a sampling of those items in various categories such as banks, bookends, paper products, figurines, smoking sets, tins, kitchen, etc. In fact almost anything you can think of, has at one time, probably been produced with a Scottie on it! This book also gives a dollar value to each item, usually in a range. The text is accompanied by good color photgraphs of the representative items. At the end of the book is a listing of books with Scotties, films with Scotties. The cover is an attractive plaid with photographs of various Scottie items. There has long been a large cult of Scottie collectors, finally there is a guide! One drawback however, is the noticeable increase in price for Scottie items since this book was published as more antique dealers now realize they can command higher prices for these items. Readers should also be advised that there is now a volume 2 in this series.
