When my son's third-grade teacher said the students could get extra credit for doing science experiments in front of the class, I began a search for a great book that would not only give simple, interesting experiments, but that would provide information about the concepts behind the projects. This book fit the bill perfectly! We've done two or three of these in front of the class already -- the kids were interested, and my son was able to convey some interesting scientific principles. Great for teachers, home schoolers, or parents intent on getting their kids extra credit. :)

I bought this for my 3rd and 4th grade homeschooled children. There are no concepts that make the Periodic Table seem dull or uninteresting in this book. Instead, it uses simple language for the elementary aged - middle school student, nice black and white drawings, and silly rhymes to make it seem so understandable and fascinating. You'll find it loaded with facts that interest children to help them draw it all together. The idea my kids are left with is that science is "so cool!" Many experiments, using everyday items, are throughout the book. This enhances the fun and learning. Science should be interesting and not boring. This book exceeded my expectations. I'm sure we'll continue to use this book for several years.

If you teach the elements and/or the periodic table to elementary students and want to make them come alive, this book is a definite must have. It is chock full of easy to prepare investigations as well as "element essentials" thumbnail sketches of various elements. Most materials are ones you have on hand either at home or school. Without a doubt, it is the best elementary chemistry book I have ever seen.

Review Date: 2006-06-10
Beginning with suggestions for ways you and your little reader can get the most out of the book, Friends Forever is a collection of three very short stories about two friends. In Cleaning House, Hare and Rabbit clean their house, only to discover that they now miss the things they threw away. A toy from a cereal box, in Mind-Reader Ring, causes a little friction as Hare becomes uncomfortable with the idea of Rabbit being able to read his mind. And in Boo-Boo Bunny, Hare gets jealous when Boo-Boo, an old friend of Rabbit's comes to town and invites them to see her perform in the circus.

The stories are just the right length for first and second graders. The illustrations are cute. Definitely not for kids much older, though, as the stories are a little boring for them.

A must read for all friends!

I got this for my 2 & 3/4 year old daughter and three other I Spy Little Books. She does not need board books now, but she likes to "read" them to her almost 1 year old brother. She will just leave them on the floor when she is done so they needed to be strong enough for him to chew on and whatever else he tries to do to the books. There is nothing cuter seeing my daughter get a book and make a story from the pictures for her brother. The pictures are simple enough for her to find any of the items listed and any other items we may ask her to find.

ISBN 059004706x - All of the I Spy books are fantastic and this one, featuring vehicles of all kinds, is particularly nice for boys who normally don't care about books. They'll start looking for cars and suddenly... they're involved in a book!

Simple rhyming text on the left-hand pages accompanies clear images of individual items that are hidden in the photos on the right-hand pages. Lots of trucks, cars, planes and more - and when you're done, you can create your own "can you find..." games!

Where's Waldo type books have amused me for my entire adult life, so finding books that introduce children to the idea so young made me very happy. Little children, who usually have the attention span of gnats, will suddenly be deep in concentration and entirely focused as they search for the hidden things. Some are surprisingly well-hidden, especially in those photos where a single color dominates or the item you're searching for is well-hidden by lack of light. Wick and Marzollo - what a team!

My 21-month-old son loves trains, cars, buses, tractors, diggers, motorbikes... anything he can roll along on their little wheels. I brought him to the library one day and he picked up this book and thus began our fascination with the I-Spy series. This clever book has green cars, police cars, zooming airplanes, a long choo-choo train etc hidden in places that challenges a toddler to seek out. It actually isn't all that easy! (I missed the kitty cat face for a while...) A wonderful book to read with eye-catching illustrations and catchy rhymes.

This is a "I spy" book for beginners. My 2 1/2 old was mesmerized by it the first time he saw it and immediately asked me to "read it again". However, he found all but one of the objects relatively quickly the first time around and now it won't take him more than one minute to go through the whole book. I encourage him to look for objects that are not featured on the left pages to make it more challanging.

A history of the sacrifice that led to the United States being poised to elect a black man president
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-10-08
Last night, my wife Kathy and I watched the second debate in the United States 2008 presidential election and there were some black people in the audience. When one of the older black people walked up to Barack Obama after it was over and had their picture taken with him, I turned to Kathy and said, "Just think what she must be thinking, she is old enough to remember segregation and now it looks like a black man will be president."
Young people are heavily favoring Obama, yet they really do not know much about how in the recent past it was difficult to impossible for black people to vote or even execute their rights. This book, written for the person in late elementary school, is a brief yet reasonably thorough explanation of the plight of blacks and the civil rights movement. This movement was much later coming that it should have been; yet when it did it was unstoppable. As is made clear in this book, not even the pain of death was enough to keep the dedicated people from marching and speaking out against the ills of racism.
Now that the country is poised to elect Barack Obama president, we can look at it with pride. However, we must never forget the pain and suffering that was endured in getting to this point, which makes this book so valuable as a historical retrospective on how we got here.

Whenever teachers in our predominantly white elementary school ask me to recommend a title pertaining to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., or to African American history, this is one of the first books I suggest for grades 4, 5 and 6.The question and answer format lends itself to reading aloud and then discussing topics that come up, like segregation, white supremacy, the Montgomery bus boycott, etc. I recently read part of this book to a fourth grade class who just had "segregation" as a vocabulary word. The students were quite attentive and asked some excellent questions. The title is a bit misleading in that some might view it as a biography of Dr. King. While many sections do draw upon personal events in Dr. King's life, such as when he was a youngster riding in the car with his father and he heard a police officer call his dad "boy." Or again, when he was young and he was told he could no longer play with his white friends. But as the title says, it's really about if you lived at the "time" of Dr. King. Therefore, it's an excellent introduction to many aspects of the Civil Rights movement. While the watercolor illustrations are an improvement over the black and white drawings in earlier editions of this "If You Lived At the Time Of" series, in this case I think the text could be more fully enhanced with actual photographs, especially since many of these illustrations are copied from well-known photographs. All in all, this is an excellent introduction to the Civil Rights Movement for upper-elementary students (and apparently for middle-school students according to another review here). This is one title that, in my opinion, should be in every elementary school in the nation. Recommended.

Martin Luther King Made the Black and white people be together and I wish I was there to help Martin Luther King. I wish I could of met him. When I was reading this , it felt like if I was there and seeing white people hurting black people's feelings. If I was one of the black people hearing the insults I would try to change it like Martin Luther King. I would recommend this book to all people so they could learn about his changes.

If you lived at the time of Martin Luther King J r.
By Ellen Levine

The Book is about when it was the 1950's to 1960's. A man named Martin Luther King Jr. was the leader for the blacks. White people were very mean to African-Americans. They had to use different schools, phone booths, neighborhoods, bathrooms, restaurants, hotels, and drinking fountains.

I like this book because I wonder about if I were there, would I have tried to help the black people? I know I would have.

I also think the illustrator did a great job on coloring the pages. I think the author wrote this book because it was about segregated laws. She wanted kids to know a famous leader or what it was like if the kids were there with him.

This guide also feautres EVERY pony and My Little Pony piece from 2003-2007 when the book was published- If your little girl (or boy) loves the ponies, you would be at a loss to not purchase this book for them.

Can't afford to buy or purchase every pony out there? Well this would make a great addition to the pony collection and doesn't take up as much space and money as owning all the ponies!

This book is DEFINITELY worth it if you collect the current release My Little Ponies. Everything is very organized, with pictures of the different ponies both in their original packaging and removed from the box. Some even have detailed Cutie Mark pictures. There are notes about special European released items and the peculiar Mexican and Brazilian ponies, as well as those available for general distribution worldwide.

The only error I caught was a picture mix-up involving Fancy Hair ponies Royal Beauty and Rainbow Treat on page 112. Other than that, everything was perfect!

It is a fabulous paper resource to organize and catalogue one's collection.

This could also make a very good gift for children who like the My Little Pony toys, due to the pictures and interesting information, but beware--they could fall in love with one of the RARE ponies like Rosey Posey! ;) Of course, perhaps that would create a budding collector!

I can't wait to see a second or third edition as the My Little Pony line continues! Heaps of thanks to Summer Hayes for taking the time to get this guide together!

My son lights up and laughs when he sees this book. He loves the peekaboo concept, but giggles even harder when mommy gets the sound "wrong." If you are signing with your child, this book provides a great opportunity to reinforce the sign with the animal sound.

One note, my niece was scared of this book when she first got it. We think it was the was the eyes are drawn...but who knows!

Highly recommended.

Wonderful book!

My 8 month old son Oliver loves this book! We have read it so many times that I can simply recite the book & he will instantly smile. The pictures are lovely . . . colorful, simple & large. The sounds of the animals delight him. I would highly recommend this book to other parents.
