Mr. Rae did an excellent job putting this book together. He covers all bases and gives you alot to consider and think on. The section at the back of the book for pastors would be a huge help in counselling couples in this area. This is the only book that I have seen that even touches these issues professionally, non condemningly and sensitively at the same time. Definitely a must read for any couple investigating these procedures.

I teach Radio/Television Broadcasting (along with being Director of Engineering, CMAT) at a State University. I read this book and many others trying to find the perfect book to use in the B'cast Engineering courses I teach here. This book is by far the best I've ever seen for the beginner to novice Engineer. I started my B'cast career in 1978 -- I wish this book would have been around then, or even during my first 5 years!!! It's written in simple terms making it easy to understand, yet completely covers the subject to the most technical aspects. If you're majoring in Communications and have an eye on the technical side, GET THIS BOOK!

One of the best introductions to home recording
Helpful Votes: 43 out of 43 total.
Review Date: 2003-08-10
This is a great book for the absolute beginner to the world of music recording on a PC. The only prerequisite is a basic understanding of how to operate a computer. The style is clear and direct - and with an appreciated dose of humility and humour. The reader gains confidence in building/modifying a PC so that it can successfully satisfy the demands of music recording software. Then the reader is guided through the selection of the audio-specific hardware and software required. The recording, editing and mixing of a multitrack song are then very clearly and thoroughly taught. Finally, the reader is shown how to create their first CD and, if they wish, how to publish it to the internet in the form of mp3 files.

Criticism might be leveled at the author because he is using a particular combination of hardware and software throughout the text (Steingberg's Cubase SX, Tascam's US-428 and Edirol's PCR-50). In my view, however, this is a sensible approach because the beginner faces an overwhelming number of possible combinations of gear (many of which may not work together!). Afterall, the world of PC audio recording has two major obstacles: the software and the hardware. This book saves you much time by giving you a working hardware setup which allows you to move directly to mastering the software. By using a setup that is tried, tested and true, you get results quickly and painlessly. In this sense, the author is doing the reader a huge favour. Renting this gear from your local music store won't break the bank and will allow you to gain some well-guided experience. After a couple of months, you'll be ready to decide on what gear configurations you want to actually purchase and (perhaps more to the point) you will have gotten a complete overview of how things work. In fact, you may have recorded and produced your first CD!

Well written, up to date and sorely needed. Highly recommended.

Excellent reference book for the serious dollhouse builder
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2005-06-24
This is a very thorough reference book covering many architectural styles from various time periods, with profuse black and white photos of dollhouses as well as photos of the actual houses being copied. It is very well illustrated with detailed scale drawings of houses and floor plans including elevation drawings of interior paneling, staircases, windows, fireplaces and trim work to follow. The book covers electrical wiring and even covers subjects like making your own period chandaliers and various styles of "iron" strap hinges and hardware, fireplace cranes and tools. There are many very useful suggestions for effects to fool the eye in cases where the actual materials portrayed would be impractical to work with in a scale model dollhouse. Included are plans for fairly simple dioramas and roomboxes for the less ambitious, the beginner, or the space and budget conscious. But the book really concentrates on intricate contemporary, victorian, gambrel roofed and saltbox houses, colonial and victorian shops, etc. Aside from a Colonial Williamsburg milliner's shop, it includes plans for a lathe and woodworker's bench and tools for the colonial carpenter's shop and bellows and anvil and related tools for the blacksmith's shop. Different chimney and fireplace styles are included. If you are building from a kit, this book would still be useful for ideas to make your dollhouse more authentic and unique. The book contains very exaustive, detailed and clear information. The approach assumes some familiarity with tools, but is clear enough for a serious beginner to follow. Very inspirational. As this is an older book, it does not have color photos. Still, the drawings are excellent and the Back and white photos are clear. There are many newer dollhouse books with lavish color photography, but they don't all have the detailed quality of the plans included in this book, so I still give it 5 stars as a serious doll house book for the do-it-yourselfer, not just for the collector of other people's handwork. It aims for a good level of realism, not cutsiness. There are still some copies of this older book in the marketplace. Get 'em while they're hot!

This book was written for practitioners. However, as it does not presume an expert's familiarity with the subject, laymen will find the content readily accessible. From the book flap:

Progress in the field of genetics is moving faster and demonstrating accomplishments unlike ever before. Genes marking for specific diseases and methods in gene therapy are evolving rapidly and being incorporated into daily patient care. Ethical issues are under constant debate by politicians, journalists, and laymen.

All health care providers need to stay informed on the research, the applicability to patient management, and the moral issues involved. Case Studies in Genes and Disease tackles all these issues for those who need it most: busy clinicians who daily see patients needing to know how advances in genetic research and therapy affect their health. Written for practitioners who are not geneticists, it does not presume an expert's familiarity with the subject. From fundamentals to specific diseases to "the dark side" of genetics, Case Studies in Genes and Disease will educate, intrigue, and astound you.

Any strong structure needs a solid foundation. As more is learned about genetic causes of diseases, more can be done to manage and heal the patient. The building blocks provided in Case Studies in Genes and Disease are complex knowledge presented in a readable, clear, and easy-to-understand format. Utilizing case studies to elaborate and enlighten, the end result is this practical, current, and beautifully illustrated work on how the human genome works.

Taped Music Revolutionizes Indian Music Industry
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-26
If you are not interested in exploring the details of the music biz in India, turn off this site right now; this book is not connected to the Western pop scene. CASSETTE CULTURE is a study of the impact of cassette technology on popular music in North India. It explores the nature of the changes the arrival of widely-available cassettes has made on the structure of the Indian music industry and on popular music itself. I found it a well-written book with an absolute minimum of scholarly jargon, though it is an academic book. The author does not presume knowledge on the part of the reader and gives careful explanations of Indian musical styles, regional cultures, and music industry details. I found the balance between theory and description excellent. There is an interesting discussion of the popular music recording scene in other parts of the world, as well as a thorough historical look at that topic in India itself. The problem of piracy is dealt with in depth. There are three basic issues that underlie Manuel's study. First, the nature of control of the mass media in India. Second, the content of the mass media and how it is presented. And third, the effect of the content on the audience and how they use that content. With these guidelines, he shows how the arrival of cassette technology and cheap cassette players in the 1970s created a revolution in Indian popular music. By the 1980s, a transformation was underway, with the rise of hundreds of small regional producers, as well as a few giants. Escape from corporate control might lead us to think that the cassette ?revolution? was a liberating force, but Manuel points out that this is not entirely so. The new technology has also been used to spread traditional, unprogressive, and even reactionary, bigoted messages through India. Cassettes have fuelled many a regionalist or separatist movement as well as the strivings of many an opportunistic politician.

I strongly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about the combination of music, popular media, technology and culture in India, one of the great civilizations of mankind, which seldom appears in Western media except for disasters, murders, or horror stories . Manuel has written a classic. Buy it.

Adrien Bleyer was one of the first investigators to link Down's Syndrome with an abnormal chromosomal count and correctly identify meiosis as the faulty process. This book is well written for both clinician and lay person and, as an historically early warning about the risks of delayed child bearing, is worthy of note.

Ethics Catches up to Cloning
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2005-02-21
CloneBeing is a brilliantly explicated book on the psychological and social implications of human cloning. For those readers whose first question might be:"Why should I read a book about cloning?"; my response would be that this book explores the many models of parenting which serve as analogies to cloning. Models which are commonplace today, but as sci fi at one time as cloning seems today. Dr. Levick provides many illuminating chapters on the psychological similarities for the parent-child relationship in models such as: The Identical Twin, Assisted Reproduction: The Stepchild; The Adoption; The Parent-Child Resemblance; The child of the famous person; The replacement and namesake child. Most of us have at least a passing familiarity with these models, if not a personal experience of them. The insights Dr. Levick brings to these issues include the motivations of the adults as well as the consequences to the child. It is fascinating and provocative reading. He ends with policy implications, and offers a way for ethics to catch up to science.
As a reader I am often guilty of skimming a book before buying it; and then skimming it as a form of "reading it." This is a book well worth buying, and then a pleasure to read and soak up its valuable observations. I highly recommend it.
