Quilting Books

Author shows deep, personal knowledge of quilting and the Hopi people. Enjoyed the historic photographs, accurate presentation of the culture of the Hopi people, and the information about specific women and their work. Especially liked story of use of quilts in naming ceremony! I know many Hopi, and they like this book, too.

I had almost given up on quilting by hand because I just wasn't satisfied with the results I got. I had resigned myself to being a machine quilter only, when I happened on this book at a quilt show. Thinking I had nothing to lose, I bought it, took it home, read it, practiced Ami's techniques for a few hours and I've never looked back. No matter how many people had tried to show me how to hand quilt, or how many other books I had read on the subject, no one laid it out as clearly and concisely, step-by-step, as Ami. I've since gone on to make many quilts-all hand-quilted- with stitches I'm proud to say have been admired by many! So if you're new to quilting,or even if you're not, this book is an absolute must for every quilter's bookshelf.

this is a book for the quilter who really enjoys a challenge.

with excellent text, photos, and patterns, the author demonstrates how to achieve amazing results by hand (mainly) and machine, without foundations. to give you a hint, the picture on the cover is almost entirely pieced, the only applique is the center fussy cut square.

the projects include a wall hanging, quilts, table toppers, a sofa pocket, a vest, and a christmas apron and stocking. quilting patterns are also included. the projects are good sizes for practicing your new skills, not so large that they won't be finished. the designs are contempory without being extreme, and there are some interesting fabric choices--i particularly liked the effect of the polka dot binding on one project.

while the production values are a tad restrained, compared to some other quilting books, there is an amazing amount of information. some quilting experience is assumed, no space is wasted on a two page guide to making a quilt.

any quilter could benefit from this book. it is a delightful change from all the 'half square triangles are just to demanding' patterns and books that seem to be increasing daily. most of the quilters i know take great pride in their skill, and this book appeals to the desire to master one's art.

A wonderful book for information on what to do with an older quilt. Gives factors to consider before making a decision to repair a quilt or leave it as it is. Also instructs one on how to make repairs to older quilts. Lots of interesting information. Best book I have found so far in how to treat an old quilt.

This is an excellent guide with clear instructions for the beginner quillworker, plus lots of photos to inspire the expert. While there's no beadwork in this book, the patterns depicted are directly applicable - I've found it an excellent resource for beading design ideas!

I found this book easy to read and I plan to use it. The techniques are clear but not overly explained. I have done quite a bit of photo to fabric and still find new things in this book. I love the gallery.

WOW! This one has everthing. Beautiful illustrations, great pattern ideas, useable tips. Makes a great gift and is a must have for any library. If you love old quilts, this is the one for you.

A plane tessellation is where a small number of patterns (sometimes only one) are repeated to completely cover a planar surface. To be a true tessellation, the covering can be extended to infinity in all directions. In many ways, tessellations are a merger of art and mathematics, because it is fairly easy to prove which geometric shapes can be used to tessellate the plane. There are also many practical uses in design, as they appear as the floors, walls and ceilings of many structures.
The authors provide many colorful examples of tessellations as well as give instructions on how to create them. Basic geometry and knowledge of angles is all the mathematics you will need to understand them. The range of the types of tessellations surprised me, as a mathematician I am familiar with the concepts of tiling the plane, but the wide variety of shapes, even the face of a witch, a fish and the face of a dog are used to create tessellations.
If you have any interest at all in tessellations, particularly if you are an artist, then this is a book you must read. It is also a great resource for elementary and middle schoolteachers.

Thoroughly meets my expectations. Easy to follow instructions. Good variety of patterns suitable for mini quilts.
