I LOVE retro fabrics
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2006-12-20
FEEDSACK QUILTS contains 11 patterns. None of them are done by paper piecing. Two have appliqué and three are done either with curves or hexagon sides. Several spark my interest such as Album - done in strips, Cracker---also done in strips and Funpatch---which looks like a modified pinwheel.

The appliqué templates are included along with clear instructions for all the quilts. A page of general directions is given. Each quilt is shown in color on a full page. While these quilts are done in feedsacks, you certainly could use retro fabrics or even go with bright and funky colors to give then a different look.

No quilting designs are talked about or included but most of the photos are clear enough to allow you to see how the author had them quilted. If you like feedsacks or retro fabric, this book will give you lots of ideas. Or you could create a new look from today's fabric and have your own version of feedsack quilts.

Pleasing color combinations, clear directions and examples that take you from traditional quilts to handbags, placemats, pillows and various wall hangs. As with all the Ondori books I own, the visuals are always very good to compensate for any possible language barriers. Comparing this 1983 quilting book to all the numerous ones out on the market today (May 2K), I find the combination of all the above attributes superior to most available and at an excellent price.

It's All About the Quilting

Wow!

This is my birth-grandmother, only discovered in 2000 (after my biomom and I found each other, of course). When we started corresponding, she sent me a copy of this book, along with all the others she's written.

I have to say - I'm not a quilter. But I'm teetering on the edge of being one. It's sheer chicken-baby-ness that's keeping me from it - I don't want to be terrible, and be a disappointment. After knowing her for only the last 2 of 30 years, one gets weird about things like this.

Anyway, that said... while I don't do it yet, I've been reading about it enough to recognize the real deal - or the real-enough deal to get started - when I see it. This book was definitely the best of the ones she's authored.

Millie's books are absolutely about the quilting - her writing can get overblown at times, but so can she ;o) - but her appreciation for 1930s fabrics and vintage patterns shines through. She really REALLY knows her stuff, and you can't beat her grasp of it. She's fantastic.

I'm obviously biased, but I'm deeply impressed by her talent and knowledge in this area. Give her a try - you'll make a lost-and-found granddaughter VERY happy, and you'll increase your own knowledge of the subject as well.

Spend some time with this truly feminist artform, and let Millie be your guide. She loves that. ;o)

Floral Abundance: Applique Designs Inspired by William Morris (That Patchwork Place)I ordered the above book from Amazon & was told to expect it on 29/06/08 and was so pleased & amazed that it was on my doorstep on that very day. What's more pleasing is that it was in perfect condition and very well protected by the way it was parcelled up.I will certainly trust & use Amazon again in the future. Tks.

Projects not limited to quilts
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2004-03-05
The floral quilt projects comprising A Floral Affair come from the pages of "Quilts Japan" magazine: as such, Japanese quiltmakers share their vision and workmanship with a distinctly oriental flair. 12 selected projects feature floral designs, a range of piecing and applique techniques, and projects which will appeal to all levels. Both standard and US metric measurements accompany projects not limited to quilts, but including cosmetic bags, pillows and more.
