Beautiful pictures, solid information for quilters. Dependable information. Quilting is to Art what playing the cello is to playing the trumpet. Very, very different. This book is about the use of color in quilting. I like the chapter on one color quilts and two color quilts. This sort of thing is never found in Art books. Strongly reccomend this book for your reference shelf.

This book is very well written and beautifully presented. A beginning quilter could pick this up and run with it! The samples are nicely done and the projects represent a well-rounded group of quilters. Can't wait for volume 2!

Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2004-01-07
This book showcases many charming and different quilts, bringing to light their distinctive charm and unique approach to the art of quilting. From pillow shams and sewing cases to dimunitive crazy quilts and a hearts doll quilt, readers will enjoy this guide to an exciting American craft. It also contains complete patterns and instructions for making your own quilts; each pattern is based on one of the quilts shown in the color plates. These projects are ideal for beginners because they echo the complexity of full scale quilts while greatly reducing the time and labor involved. Experienced quilters will be eager to add these classic and unique pieces to their collections.

I'm just delighted with this book! Maaike starts off with instructions on how to paper piece, planning a quilt, assembling the quilt top, finishing the quilt --- I found the quilting instructions particularly useful and well illustrated. The binding section is very thorough as well.

Then its off to the 10+ projects, ranging from fairly simple (4 blocks) to quite detailed (40+ blocks). Even though the blocks themselves are fairly simple (all of the blocks are done in one piece - there don't appear to be any multi-piece patterns - so most of the blocks are doable even by beginners), the projects are well designed, and embellished beautifully with borders, sashings, bindings and quilting. Unlike a lot of quilting books I've seen, I can actually see how these projects were quilted, and quilting patterns are provided.

In the book you'll find blocks for teapots, coffee pots, cups and saucers, milk jugs, mugs, bowls, plates, jam jars, candles, a soup tureen, a cookie tin, a basket, several different fruits and vegetables, and some lovely cabinets - all sewn into delightful projects. Beautiful photographs, beautiful designs - this book is a WINNER :)

Exquisite Quilt Designs!

Review Date: 2005-09-22
If you're looking for some innovative ways to enhance your piecing skills, this is the book for you! Author Trice Boerens shows how adding just a few curves to quilt blocks can significantly change the look from clumsy and rigid to natural and flowing. See sailboats, hearts, butterflies, flowers and more come to life with this simple method of curved piecing. From full-size bed quilts to smaller baby quilts and wall hangings, this book offers exquisite designs that push beyond the norm of traditional quilt designs, but are not as radical as some of the wild art quilts. The look is clean and contemporary. And with 125 full-color how-to illustrations and 75 full-size piecing templates, plus more than 60 photos, you'll be able to handle any curves that are thrown at you!

I love this book!

This book is great. Instructions are clear and there are many photographs of cushions on chairs and other furniture, helping you visualize. There are also pictures and diagrams to help you clearly understand sewing instructions.

The books covers over 15 different types of cushions - from the very basic to advanced. (Bow-tie, frilled, piped, envelop, mitred, eyelet, turkish corner to name some.) Some of the areas other than cushions include applique, patchwork, machine quilting, etc. I am sure there is something in here for everyone. In fact, my dilemma is choosing just one from all these projects to work on first. I think you will have the same problem.

I picked this book up in a bookstore and was so satisfied with it that I am willing to purchase other books in this series (sew in a weekend series) on-line without actually checking out their contents - something I never do in the case of craft books.
