Indispensible for Coverlet Collectors
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2000-08-30
Heisey's Checklist of American Coverlet Weavers is an indispensible reference in the library of any collector of American woven coverlets. Although this addresses only the weavers of figured ("jacquard") coverlets, even those of us who concentrate on the geometric coverlets, such as myself, will find this a rewarding read.

If you surf the on-line auctions for coverlets keep this by your computer. Take it with you to live auctions, antique shows, and antique shops. Many a "sleeper" is hidden under the lack of knowledge about American coverlets. Heisey will provide you with the info needed to identify and save a rare and valuable old coverlet from an ignominious fate (such as being cut up for teddy bears...) It will also provide you with the data you need to expand your collection with significant, early, or regional examples

I adore this book. For anyone who can still get caught up in the magic of childhood, this book is a treat. It is a pleasure to read and the pictures are beautiful. I have a lot of craft books, but this one I actually read from cover to cover, and savored it. I can't wait to get started on some of the projects. The book isn't just about individual projects, but inspiration for creating personalized heirlooms for children that we love and adding to their world that is already full of wonder.

Affordable gift idea

This is the time of year when we begin to think of starting our Christmas shopping. If you are like me, you have people on your list that you never know what to get them. If you have a person like that on your list, then the CHRSTMAS MAGNET SET is a nice gift. Or maybe you belong to a quilting guild, a Red Hat group or some other group that exchanges small gifts during the holiday season. This magnet set would be a good item for that exchange.

There are four 1 ¾" magnets. Each depicts a scene from the Nativity. There is an angel, a donkey, 2 sheep and, of course, the baby in the manger. The pieces are enameled and done in bright colors. They are come in a hinged lidded tin box and are protected with foam.

With the price of $12.95, it is something affordable and is useful at the same time. Why not put it on your list of things to buy?

"Baking" for Christmas with your Sewing Machine
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-11-08
I love to bake for the Holidays but with watching my weight, it has become a no-no. To satisfy my need to bake, I picked up CHRISTMAS WITH ARTFUL OFFERINGS instead. You can "bake up" a batch of cookies in no time with a bit of fabric, ribbon and thread.

I loved the way this book was written. Each pattern starts out with a list of "ingredients" and goes on to pattern preparation. These terms make you think of baking rather than sewing and it is a cute way to write Christmas patterns. There is a color photo of the item before each set of instructions begins and each has a descriptive paragraph about the item. The instructions are clearly written with nicely done graphics to go along with them.

I have not sent Christmas cards in a number of years because I feel it is a waste. I mean how many cards can one keep? The author has solved my problem on that score. Quilted Cookie Note Cards are a wonderful way to send cards again AND if you add a bit of ribbon for a hanger, they can become ornaments for the recipient's tree.

Aprons are making a comeback and the Ginger Cookie Lined Apron is very easy to make. It is a full "bib" apron which is very nice for a hostess trying to get food on the table but yet wanting to be dress for the occasion.

Ms. Hittle provides needle punch patterns as well as sewing patterns. Other patterns include a vase, place mats, napkins, stockings and a wall hanging. The book contains plenty of different items so you should find one for everyone on your Christmas list.

An excellent book on color usage and combinations in quilts!
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2000-10-08
I originally stumbled across this gem in my local library. The text is straightforward and easy to understand, with plenty of examples to demonstrate the principles of color covered in the book. I was impressed that the author not only included pictures of successful color combinations, but also a few examples of quilts that didn't turn out very well because of color selection or placement. The library made me give their copy back---so I figured it was worth the investment to add it to my quilting library! Definitely one I will refer to again and again.

excellent pictoral and verbal guide

I bought this book because the quilt on the cover intriged me. I was not disappointed. There is eleven projects all rated from easy to challenging. There are lots of COLOR photos and examples that make it easy to follow the projects. There are important material charts and time saving tips included and the instructions are easy to understand. The only thing I would have liked to see was in addition to the feathered "star" quilt they had, was a more classic feathered star pattern also, which is difficult to find.
