Quilting Books

I am the Author of Ashlee's Smile Quilt. It was written about my seven year old Grand daughter when she visited me and wanted to make a quilt. She wanted to use the large smile handkerchiefs which were popular at the time. It is instructional and is a coloring book, teaching young people to get interested in sewing, and to create a quilt.

This is the first time I have discovered this author. I look forward to buying more in the future.

This book works equally well if you are a beginner or an experienced quilter. Beautifully illustrated pages combine quotes about life with tips on making your quilts both your own and more beautiful. Using one quilt that combines pieced and applique the authors encourage you to use the quilt as a journal or to keep a journal as you make your quilt. If you don't want to tackle the entire quilt there are several neat projects including a book to carry unfinished blocks, a samll quilt with children, and a sewing case. My neighbor(who doesn't even own a needle) enjoyed just reading the book!

A must buy! An amazing design- a pleasure to read, and an amazing assembly of words, paper, and pen.

The calendar is a month per page with 1 ½ x 1 ¾ squares for each day so there is lots of room to keep track of your activities. The days even have those special ones noted such as Daylight Savings Time Begins and, of course, all the holidays.

Each month has a quilt and the first two pages of the calendar have a paragraph about it. That paragraph gives the size, the creator, what place the quilt won, and then a bit about the quilt itself. The back page shows each of the quilts in a thumbnail photo.

You will have a different quilt to look at each month as you keep track of your activities. There is a metal "hole protector" so when you hang the calendar, it will not tear through.

I found this to be an excellent book for a beginner or a more experienced quilter. This is not just another watercolor book. she shows a great technique for making fabulous quilts. the color qraphics in the book are excellent. i look forward to her next book.

I am a bagmaker and this book has some of the prettiest patchwork bags! There are 25 different bags, not 6 bags with different embellishments like some books. All different shapes: square, round, rectangular, drawstring, etc. Some bags have purchased handles, some are sewn. Different fabrics - silk, cotton, felt. There are also ideas and directions for all sorts of embellishments -- yo-yos, stencils, embroidery, beading, ribbon, buttons, felt cutouts. Most of the patchwork squares can be rotary cut and there are templates in the back of the book for the others. Just a neat book for beginners or pros!

I saw this quilt exhibit at the Maryland Historical Society in Baltimore, MD, a few weeks ago on 16 June2001. This book is a great companion piece and I was thrilled to see that it was written in English and Japanese as I have quilting friends who have lived in Japan. It's beautifully done and you can make out the extremely tiny quilting stitches on some of these quilts. If you're interested in Baltimore Album quilts, this book is a must. Lovely.

Seeing the cover of this book during the time I've started my first bargello quilted jacket has captured my imagination. Bargello quilting is amazingly easy, and SO MUCH FUN! It gets the creative juices flowing! I've yet to find this particular volume, but the cover shows a beautiful story to draw me completely in.

I don't think the designs in this book are what I love about Bargello--embroidery or quilts.

That said, She's taken what Mary Ellen Hopkins calls a 2-bell block and run with it. One can do incredible numbers of things with this block that looks remarkably like not very much at all when you see just one.

(two bell blocks are generally very simple blocks with at least two different kinds of corners that are perfect for arranging and rearranging in larger patterns)


In fact I've resisted using this kind of block for many years. Maggie Ball has changed my mind. A quilt made with this particular block, or something like it is now on my list of quilts to make
