What a BEAUTIFUL American Craft Treasure-Trove!

For the color photos alone, this book is a work of art!

WOW! What a collection! It's great even as a "coffee table book" or art book, much more for those who are interested or involved in actual quilt-making or collecting.

Some of the patterns are striking! It's even better than the Antiques Roadshow to be able to find all these quilts/photos in one handy reference. Amish values have a lot to teach the rest of us, and this amazing craftmanship is one of them!

The chapters (found nowhere else!): Color Among the Amish, Quilts in the Life Cycle, Excerpts from a Grandmother's Diary, A Quilting, Contentment Within Limitations, Readings and Sources, Index.

Good book but not what I thought

I ordered this book as part of my mother's Christmas present. In all fairness, the information about the book did not indicate that it included templates, so I really couldn't deduct any stars for that. I just presumed it included the templates. The pictures are truly beautiful as are the quilts. Mom's pretty smart, so she'll figure out the pattens. I read Beverly Lewis's novels about the Amish, so seeing some of the patterns she has mentioned in her books was great. I even learned what Shoo-fly pie is.

Sheila has done it again! This time she has designed a yearful of cats, each with earsful of seasonal cheer. Uh, I'd better explain. Sheila has designed twelve cats, one for each month, each having month-appropriate hats on his ears. For example:
April's cat has umbrellas in her ears and is named "Don't Rain on My Purrade" and June's kitty is entitled "Will Mew Marry Me?" with a top hat on one ear and a wedding dress on the other.
Who has a great sense of humor?
Instructions are given for making finished quilt blocks for each month, plus other great crafts projects.
What fun!

This book was written by a woman who has had quilters in her family for generations. So, not only are you getting wonderful pictures, instructions on a great quilting technique, and objective history, you get the history of a creative and quilting family!

It's obvious the author did a lot of research - it was fun to read not only about 15th century quilting, but did you know that Victorian soldiers were quilters, too?

The Egyptian Medallion Quilt, for which instructions are given, is breathtaking!

Such a creative departure from books full of quilt patterns!

Buy it!

A complete learning guide to applique
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 2006-11-15
Even though I teach quilting, I always begin with the general direction section of a quilt book in hopes of learning a new trick or tip. I was rewarded in 48-Hour Appliqué Quilts"! Linda Causee explained how to make mitered borders in a format that I believe even my beginning students will understand! THANK YOU, Linda. I have read other author's explanations of mitered borders but none made as much sense as Linda did. The rest f the general directions contained plenty of graphics with the explanations making them so easy to understand. This will be one book that I will use to teach to my students appliqué.

The book only contains five quilts BUT those five have 73 different blocks between them. WOW! Most are flower type of appliqués but there are 10 that as especially for children such as animals, a house, a heart and Sunbonnet Suet and Overall Bill. If you only make one of each appliqué, by the time you have those 73 squares completed, you will be proficient at appliqué.

The quilt named Hearts and Flowers has a "double" affect. While you appliqué all the hearts and flowers on the squares, the patchwork itself creates a heart. This shows how you can create a background of the very thing you are appliquéing!

Each of the five quilts has a list of materials needed, cutting directions and very simple instructions for creating the quilt itself. The general directions are where you will find the "how-to" on the appliquéing technique. Whether you want to make a quilt for a child or an adult, this book will provide everything you need to make a wonderful keepsake.

This is actually all three of Judy Hopkins previous books combined for the cost of only one!!! (Around the Block, Around the Block Again, & Once More Around the Block) This is NOT a how to book. You need to KNOW how to SEW and have basic quilting background. These patterns are meant to be ROTARY cut! Here you will find a color example of the block and then you will have a diagram that shows the basic construction in MINIMAL detail but the most excellent part is that you are given VARIOUS size blocks. You need 6" blocks fine, 12" blocks no problem. There is a HUGE reason why the original books are all sold out and selling for greater than the cover, it is because the patterns are solid. You need this book, use it for centers, swaps, borders, and you won't be disappointed!
