I've used it over and over. You mentioned that you were going to do drafts of the Irish Cabin pattern mentioned in your book. Did you ever do it? I need a size for a Queen Bedspread-102x112.I hope you have worked it up. I like the way it looks. Hope to hear from you about this. Thanks. Marie Bundy

This book is the best of all worlds: it combines the speed of strip quilting with the economy of scrap quilting. The directions are clear and easy to understand, I checked it out from the library and taught myself how to piece quilts! Full of illustrations, it explains many favorite patterns such as log cabin, nine patch, woodpile, flying geese, roman stripes/fence rail and others. Definitely a must have for newer quilters, and even more the experienced.

This book contains lots of ideas and from there you can get your own ideas. It did help me in making my latest quilt. I am a beginner quilter and have not made that many and this book was very helpful and easy to work with.

A must-have book

I don't usually like to buy books sight-unseen, but had heard that this book had instructions for a sash arrangement that I had been unable to find elsewhere. What a pleasant surprise! This book has every conceivable setting and sashing possible, with directions for figuring out what you need for your specific quilt. It covers the whole range from simple strips for sashing, to complex pieced sashings. There are colored illustrations, featuring quilts that use each of the sashings, and some will just take your breath away. This is a book that every quilter should have in her library.

I just had the opportunity to spend 3 fun-filled days with the sisters at a workshop...they're just as much fun as their colorful quilts. The book is my very favorite, very well written with whimsical explanations of each quilt. Super instructions and illustrations that will have you wanting to make one of each!!! You won't be disappointed with this one!

Great quilts from easy piecing

Nine fun quilts make up SEW FUN SO COLORFUL QUILTS. Written by two sisters (as the name implies), they do such designs as cats and flowers, along with Flying Geese, Square in a Square and simple blocks and strip. When they put them all together, they get wonderfully fun quilts that aren't hard to make.

The quilt sizes range from 52" square to 74" x 93" to 84" square and various sizes in between. The instructions contain a materials list, cutting instructions, how to make the blocks and assembling and finishing directions. There are lots of graphics to make it easy to follow along in the pattern. (Aren't we quilters visual people? So graphics are GOOD!).

The section on General Instructions covers things like machine piecing, basic embroidery, measuring and bias binding. There are even a couple of paragraphs about the sisters. All in all, this would be a great book to inspire a young quilter to begin or spice up the life of a long time quilter. Either way, it is a good book with easy but interesting patterns. A couple of these will find their way into our guild's charity work for Love and Hugs (seriously ill children 0 - 18 years).

I saw the Gee's Bend exhibit and was overwhelmed by the energy, the art, and the human story in those amazing quilts. They were so different from mainstream quilts, and I wanted to find out more about African American traditions in quilting. I stumbled over Signs & Symbols at my local library and loved it. It not only has wonderful photos of quilts, but delves into the symbols and artistic structure of the quilts and how they relate to traditional African art and symbols---with plenty of photos of African textiles, amulets, etc. I'm no expert in anthropology and ethnology, but I am familiar with academic research, and I think Wahlman has presented a wealth of fascinating and compelling evidence for the relationship.

The quilts are truly stunning, the quilting (not just the piecing) shows up well in many of the photos, and dimensions are given (which I'm delighted by---I can get a feel for the measurements of the patches and blocks). This book's quilts are informing my own quilts and will be for many years. In terms of influence on my work, I put Signs & Symbols in the same category with Liberated Quiltmaking (by Gwen Marston).

Be aware, this is not a how-to book. There are no projects, and no descriptions of how to make quilts. But if you like quilt books that are filled with beautiful old quilts, and want to immerse yourself in a different and entrancing quilting tradition, you'll love this book.

Holy Cow Girlfriend! That's one fantabulous book!

Review Date: 2008-10-23
I received my copy in the mail yesterday. I put it down just long enough to sleep and go to work. My head is still spinning! Rarely do craft books come packed with so much information. I know, because I have lots and lots of them. Rarely are they so detailed and clear. This is not merely a "make this project" kind of book. This is a "here is a new concept and how to use it" book. I love those kind of books!

The book shows you how to make curves using only straight lines. Spirals swirl in, out and around, point to point, and nest inside one another. The quilts in the gazillion and one photos are original works by RaNae and the group of Spiromaniacs who worked alongside her, tested her theories, and put her techniques into practice. All there for you to drool over, then jump up and run to your sewing machine!

The quilts (66 of them!) and their designers/creators truly are Simply Amazing. No pun, no exaggeration. The quilts are individual, inspiring, challenging, and just plain ole' gorgeous. [...]

The book is divided into four sections: Meet the Spirals (20 pgs), Designing with Spirals (52 pgs), Sewing Spirals (26 pgs), and Projects (22 pgs). Each section is lavishly illustrated, making the exciting concepts easier to understand and sink your teeth into. RaNae hands you concepts and tools, then sets you free to express your creative instincts in a totally unexpected and new direction.

There are numerous side-bars of "extra" information that magically answer the question you're just about to ask. The page layout and format is eye-friendly, and sucks you into reading all the juicy bits. My only complaint is that I wanted to read everything all at the same time! My favorite line from a troubleshooting section on p 102 is "Solution: First, scream! Next, take a deep breath." and then calmly walks you through fixing the problem.

Many of the quilts have a very contemporary feel. I personally love very traditional quilts. RaNae has managed to design several that fill my love for traditional and at the same time put me squarely in the 21st century! Some are vibrantly alive with color, a few are calming and comforting. I can't even start to point out my favorites, because I might miss one, there's so many!

To describe this book in just a few words: exciting, innovative, breath-taking, creative, mind-expanding! A must have for the quilter who loves to design and wants to take his or her work to the next level.

Wonderful book!

Anyone can do it, from the most basic beginner to the most talented quilter. I strongly recommend this book to anyone that enjoys quilting. You won't regret it a bit!!!

I checked this out from a public library years ago and then had a hard time locating it to purchase for myself. I love the book, pictures and full-size templates. The quilt color schemes are bright and yet traditional. Wonderful quilt ideas to give as gifts---as most are not full bed size.

SMALL SCALE QUILTMAKING takes the mystery and fear out of tiny piecing. The selection of fabric is so very important, showing that the strong contrasting fabrics have more character. Many projects to entice any quilter with information to make this tiny project a reality.

How can this author put so much into a book. She begins with easier piecing and takes the mystery out of putting tiny pieces together. She goes beyond this by showing the best value of color to make the quilt dance and sparkle. This is an amazing book, one that every quilter should have in their library. She solves problems, causes you to want to make tiny quilts in many many colors for every room in the house.

THIS IS A GREAT BOOK WELL WRITTEN, EASY TO FOLLOW. LOTS OF ORIG IDEAS. THE ONLY THING I WISH THE AUTHOR WOULD OF DONE WAS TO SHOW A SMALL PHOTO OF THE FABRICS USED TO MAKE THE QUILT THE ONLY WAY YOU GET AN IDEA OF THE FABRIC IS IF SHE USED IT IN THE EDGE OR SASHING. A NICE EVEN SMALL PHOTO OF WHAT SHE STARTED WITH WOULD OF MADE IT EASIER FOR THE BEGINNER QUILTER TO BE ABLE TO JUDGE A PIECE OF FABRIC. THE BOOK IS GREAT AND I HOPE SHE WRITES MORE. THANKS
