"Quilting and Braiding" is an excellent scholarly analysis of the Christologies of two leading feminist theologians. Schrein compares and contrasts these two theologians and offers a fair critique of both women's positions. In her first two chapters, Schrein examines the foundational thought of both McFague and Johnson, and explains the theological influences on both women. She proceeds to give a detailed explaination of both women's positions in Christology. McFague, coming from a Protestant background, is a constructionist at heart and seeks to find new ways of understanding Jesus as Christ, which eventually leads to her focus on the "cosmic Christ" rather than the person of Jesus and his particular message. Johnson, on the other hand (a Catholic), is a reformist and deconstructionist in her thought and seeks to extract from Christian tradition that which is valuable for the purpose of liberation; her Christology follows along the same lines and she is deeply concerned with getting as close as possible to the historical Jesus in order to further ascertain the true meaning of his ministry and, thus, a more meaningful understanding of the Christ for our time. This perspective leads to her focus on Jesus' teachings on the reign of God. In the end, Schrein gives both theologians high regard, but comes to the conclusion that Johnson has a more balanced position; an opinion that I am inclined to agree with. This work is not only valuable for understanding these two leaders in feminist theology, but it points to a broader understanding of Christology in the Christian tradition, and represents the value of feminist theology in this topic. A fine piece of work.

This book is awesome. I was dreading the quilting on my projects because of the marking problems. With the ideas in this book, you will never have to mark another quilt. It shows methods for using the backing of your quilt for quilting lines, something I never would have thought of.

Ideas Galore - even for those who think they aren't creative

This is a book which provides a host of fabulous ideas for quilting patterns - quilting patterns which don't require you to mark your quilt top (yippee!), fiddle around with graph paper or tracing paper (hallelujah!) and which allow you to be really creative even if you can't draw (unbelievable!) Furthermore, the technique can be used by everyone for every type of quilt: people who quilt by hand, people who quilt by machine, people who make patchwork quilts, people who applique. There are a lot of ideas in this book - and it gives you the confidence to experiment. The text has been written with the machine-quilter in mind (some discussion about technical issues which are irrelevant for hand quilters), but it seems to me that it would be just as useful and exciting for handquilters. And there are some samples of hand quilted projects in the book. No project patterns - but loads of full colour photos of completed quilts. A book which will change the way you quilt for ever!

-----A real book for beginners-----
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-02-23
This is a great book for anyone wanting to learn to quilt! It begins with information about the basic materials you need to quilt. They include scissors, rotary cutter, pencils, templates, pins, thread, needles, rulers, fabrics and batting. The items are explained and the reader is told how best to use them. There are directions for making templates, using a rotary cutter, hand stitching and also basic machine stitching. A section called Working with Color explains how to choose and mix your color fabrics.

The author takes you step by step into twelve different projects. The instructions are concise and the pictures are close up and easy to see.

There are a lot of quilting how-to-books out there, but so many of them are too advanced for most beginners. This book is not intimidating and can give a novice the sewing skills needed to make a quilt!

While the last ten years has seen a vast rise in the popularity of quilting, many beginning and advanced quilters will readily admit they lack some of the basic techniques necessary to the art, or have become too used to a limited number of quilting approaches. Enter Celia Eddy's Quilting Basics, which provides step-by-step coverage of key quilting skills all beginners should know; plus a range of quilting designs and explanations lending to advanced quilting knowledge. The beautiful color photos of both techniques and finished products makes Quilting Basics a highly recommended pick indeed.

Patterns are great and quite different. Explanations are interesting. The projects are done as individual blocks, which is nice. If you want to combine them into a larger project, you have that option as well. I recommend this book.

For a number of years, Shirley MacGregor has been bringing us the beauties of the Far East rendered as quilts through her "Manhole Cover" books, which feature designs from the streets of Japan. In this volume she and her co-author (and a bevy of volunteer quilters) have provided a variation on the theme, borrowing floral designs from 16th century Korea and rendering them in appliqué. The book is a rich cultural mix - part history, part biography, part art - held together by the stories of the quilters and their quilts as they brought these lovely designs to life. Basic appliqué instructions and patterns are included for making some of these quilts. The most spectacular of the quilts is a rendering of the "two pumpkins" design by Madelaine Hutchin of Sussex, England, but all of the quilts are lovely, and as usual with the books from Carriage Trade Press, very different.

Fabulous for all foundation piecers!
Helpful Votes: 48 out of 49 total.

Compared to most other foundation piecing books, this is a super bargain! Each block is not only pictured in fabric, but also in a full design so you can see what the overall effect will be once it is finished (which is great when deciding on fabric placement).

In addition, most of the blocks are shown in alternate arragements and have a 4" and 2" size to photocopy (which helps cut down on photocopying costs and design angst, as it reduces the amount of enlarging/reducing you have to do).

The designs range from very basic to the more complex, although there are not any extremely difficult ones. You may find some of the basics are repeats if you own other foundation piecing books, but the other hundred or so designs you won't have will make it well worth your while. This is a MUST HAVE for any foundation piecer's library!

Nice for the foundation piecer's library

This is a very good book on Foundation Piecing, but if you already own Davis/Schiffer's other three books in the Foundation Piecing Library, you do not need this one as it appears to be a subset of the three. ("Garden-Inspired...", "Hearts and Flowers..." and "Victorian...")

Absollutely love it. I learn quilting while living abroad and fell in love immediatelly with it. Now after few years I got back home and I do not have the possibillity to just go and buy some more books. I ordered this from Amazon to be able to show my friends about patchwork and tell them about all different types of blocks you can do. As I do teach patchwork as well this is my big friend to achieve just the best results. ENJOY

The title of the book is a good summary of the contents.

This is a wonderful book for beginning quilters and not-so-beginning quilters. Ms. Gordon includes photographs of the various tools used in creating quilts. She shows pictures of historically significant quilts and provides commentary about the various styles and patterns. The major portion of the book is filled with carefully drawn and colored illustrations showing individual patches and variations as well as detailed step-by-step instructions for crafting the patches. Along the way, the reader absorbs ideas about color and pattern matching. I have had this book checked out from my public library for six weeks and finally realized that it was time to buy my own copy. I know I'll be referring to this book over and over again in the years ahead.

Compiled and organized by needlecraft expert Jodie Davis (with the assistance of her step-mother Jayne Davis, who is a life-time practitioner of the needle arts), "Quilting With Jodie In Cotton Country" offers sixteen quilting and home-decorating projects that even the most novice needlecrafter can accomplish in their own sewing room. This primer on quilting skills includes quick-sew techniques such as rotary cutting, strip piecing, fusing, raw-edge applique, curve-and-pleat piecing, cut-and-fuse applique, the sew-turn-stuff applique dimension technique, and more. Enhanced with the inclusion of period photographs, simple recipes, history notes, anecdotes, mottos, and a song, "Quilting With Jodie In Cotton Country" is a fun and informative "how to" resource for developing quilting skills and techniques, making it strongly recommended for personal and community library Quilting & Needlecraft instructional reference collections.

From page one the reader is engaged in the creative process that brings us to the 'look' of quilts that has evaded us. Not only does Ms. Marston identify the character of quilting that has drawn so many of us to the art and, until now, been miising from our quilts.....she invites us into and through the process. Amazingly simple techniques are reviewed and once implemented, make 'nice' quilts.....'remarkable' quilts. This one is for any quilter out there who's quilts need "something" or is contemplating their first heirloom quilt. It has redefined my craft and creativity.

FINALLY, a book that understands the hand quilter!

From one hand quilter to another, "Quilting With Style" by Gwen Marston and Joe Cunningham is fantastic! It's concise, down to earth, and LOTS of information on the actual hand quilting Designs! It's about time!! They emphasis the importance of the quilting being as beautiful as the piecing or applique of the top itself. What brings a quilt 'to life' and how to choose your designs to accent your quilt top. It's a MUST READ! Karen Bush, Professional Hand Quilter

Review Date: 2001-07-27
There are many misconceptions and myths about quilting throughout history and as lovely as these old stories about quilting might be, it is helpful to know what is accurate history and what is not. The American Quilt Study Group has been striving to find the truth about our quilting history for the last 20 years. Their goal is to encourage good research on quilting to be shared the AQSG regularly published "Uncoverings". "Quiltmaking in America" is a selection of articles from this publication. One thing you can be certain of as you read the chapters of this book, the information you find is well researched. The scientific approach used for these articles makes it perfect for teachers and students of women's studies and women's history. But the fascinating information and pictures in the articles makes it a great book for anyone interested in quilting of the past.

Wonderful Book for the History Buff

This wonderfully informative book is a selection of various research papers that were published by the American Quilt Study Group in their annual journal "Uncoverings" during the 1980s. The articles are grouped into six subtopics: Pattern Development and Distribution, Quilts and Quiltmakers in Early America, Wars and the Work of Women, Textiles and Tools, Many Hands: Group Quilting, and finally, Shifting Functions: Quiltmakers in the Twentieth Century.

The individual articles are extensively researched, well written, colorfully illustrated and provide complete footnotes at the end for those who would like to do further reading. In many cases, the research included personal interviews and examination of personal correspondence.

The American Quilt Study Group was founded in 1980 by Sally Garoutte of Mill Valley, California with the purpose of fostering accurate research on American quilts and was run out of her home for the first eight years of its existence. A group of about 50 people met in November of 1980 and the organization has since grown to about 1000 members strong.

Prior to reading this book, I had no understanding of the role that quiltmaking has played in American culture and society since colonial times. The articles that were selected represent a wide range of dates and interests. I was especially impressed by the detailed piecing of the Primitive Hall Quilt made in Chester County, Pennsylvania in 1842. Also, I thoroughly enjoyed the section on quiltmaking during the Civil War and during the aftermath and recovery in Europe from World War II.

If you are at all interested in the history of quilting in America, this is a must read.
