I loved the Pattern. It was a sweet book about a young girl who falls in love with a man who is a doctor. Her parents dont
approve but let her marry him anyway. The whole story is about never giving up and always trusting God.

Doreen Speckman has a wonderful sense of humor about making quilts: "How many of us actually need the quilts we make? Ya got
central heat?" This sense of fun, combined with her clear explanations and original approach to quilt design, raise "Pattern
Play" a cut above most other quilt books. The hints on accurate piecing alone are worth the cost of the book. Beautiful color
photos of many of Doreen's quilts make you want to run to the fabric store to start your next project.

Of books that teach (or purport to teach) creativity, I like this the best. Using a few simple blocks, and applying a few
simple techniques to them, Doreen Speckman opens the door to limitless creativity. Helping us linear souls get the feeling
we are, in fact, capable of flights of fancy is liberating.

I have been a fan of Paula's kaleidoscope quilts for almost as long as I have been quilting (over 25 years). This book is
FANTASTIC! The first section shows her progression of her quilts and she also adds information about what she learned, her
inspiration, ideas she used in the quilt, or life stories at the time.
One of my favorite portions of the book is the 2nd section which describes her design strategies. I am amazed at how she uses fabric. This information is useful beyond kaleidoscope quilts.
The 3rd section gives the technical details of how to make this style of quilt. The illustrations are excellent and I completely understand her techniques.
Paula is a genius of kaleidoscopes and I will continue to be a fan.

Oh, my.
Her quilts are amazing. Enjoy!
And furthermore I learned why a very simple 2-color quilt that I made recently doesn't really work. She explains that you can blend fabrics in one of her quilts in two ways. One of which is to borrow colors from the next fabric you're using.
This may sound a bit odd, but I hit my forehead with my fist and said, THAT'S WHY!
People had already told me they thought I had just used one fabric and wondered why I was showing it off as a quilt top if it was just one piece of fabric.
So Nadelstern's kaleidoscope quilts look as though they were designed and made with one material--they're not, and she's good about showing you the fabrics she's used.
And very much to my taste, they don't all look like they were designed and created on the computer. She starts the design as if it were shot through a kaleidoscope and then moves the center. That kind of thing.
And there's some kaleidoscope information here too.

The quilt world was fortunate to have Beth Gutcheon for a brief period of time. She has subsequently moved on to write several
books of fiction and screenplays, also of merit. However, while she was in our clutches, she wrote one of the first intelligent
books about quilting, a primer which did not "write down" to women who sewed. It is a book which assumed from the onset that
quilters were more interested in exploring visual patterns and their impact, rather than making ducks-and-bunnies quilts (which,
while perhaps appropriate for children, somehow became associated with female creativity in the 70's and 80's). This book
was a welcome relief.

I bought this book in the 70's and it still has an honored place in my bookcase. Yes, I learned to quilt from it but more
than that, I learned to think about handwork as craft and art. The book is fabulously funny as well. I didn't last long as
a quilter but I've incorporated many of the designs into my knitting.
Every craft book should be this well written, clear in instruction and as well illustrated! I smile every time I pick it up or pass it on the bookcase. It is a masterwork.

and guide the quilter through each step. There is a lively energy in the book and a well-ordered path through each design.
Plus the Designer's Tips invite you into this great world of creating quilts that our grandchildren will love. Sinclair Snyder's
book describes a great accessible technique for borders that work and speeds the process along to a smooth finish.

detail and the instructions are very easy to follow, I highly recommend anyone interested in baltimore have a look thru it.

If you have ever been fascinated by this traditional pattern, you must have this book for your library. You will get your
money's worth and then some. Before she ever gets to the 15 projects and their step-by-step instructions, Lois gives a history
of the block, shows 48 different variations, and provides basics instructions for hand or strip piecing, appliqué or foundation.
There is also a Gallery of quilts, both old and new, providing additional inspiration. Finally, on page 43, we start the
projects designed for the book. They range from the simple paper pieced tree made with long strips for each layer of branches
to the eye-popping pieced tree with more than 40 triangles. Each pattern is clearly explained with excellent graphics and
written instructions. Many of the projects are small, allowing you to try different trees without making a lifetime commitment.
An extra bonus is the gorgeous quilting design that goes with Pine Star wallhanging, a classical beautiful combination of leaves, cones and swirls. It would make an equally impressive appliquéd border design.

Too bad it's out of print, but I've read that the author intends to update and reprint a new edition. Based on this edition,
it should be worth getting. This edition covers fallacies and when to ignore them, pressing plans, and variations of the Mariner's
Star, as well as basics on ironing (or rather pressing instead of ironing).
