A different kind of paper piecing

I don't usually paper piece because I'm "economical" and hate wasting all those bits of fabric. This method is different however - the paper is on the bottom and the sewing is done on the fabric with almost no waste. Very clear instructions, a nice gallery and great diagrams make this an easy and rewarding method. Only "too bad" part is that instructions for the lovely tulip runner are not included in the book. It was pretty easy to figure out from the picture however, after a few practice blocks.

Great quilts, great stories
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2001-07-31
What fun the authors must have had in writing this book! As they did in Volume I (1836-1936) Ms Bresenhan and Ms. Puentes give us quality color pictures of Texas quilts, pictures of the quilters and stories about the quilts and the makers. After seeing the quilts and reading the stories you feel as if you know these Texas women who expressed their artistic creativity through the medium of quilt-making.

Included in volume II (1936-1986) are quilts by Pamela Studsill, a two time recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts Visual Arts Fellowship. Also featured is the "Pele" quilt by fiber artist Beth Kennedy. And of course there are also some very traditional quilts from the 30's and 40's and delightful innovative work from the 70's and 80's.

Delightful book

I cannot believe someone hasn't reviewed this book yet. It is wonderfully charming with beautiful, large color pictures of 63 quilts made in Texas between the years of 1836 and 1936. Accompanying each quilt is also a picture of the quiltmaker and a page about her life and quilt.

The stories of the women are as interesting as their quilts. One story tells of a woman alone with her baby, hearing the Indians circling her log cabin. She spins all night to listen to the whistle of her spinning wheel so as not to be afraid. What wonderful foremothers we had, who left us a legacy of their courage and industry as well as their beautiful handiwork.

I love the books Eleanor Burns puts together. My first quilting class was her Quilt In A Day Log Cabin Quilt. She makes the process easy, fun and understandable. This book looks very similar. I took a look through it and I understand now more quickly because of her technique of stripping and keeping it more easily learned and done. Pravo Eleanor Burns and company!!

I finished reading the book this morning and am impressed that the authors have covered just about everything anyone needs to know to start the hobby of quilting. Their tips were great and the text is very understandable. In fact, I recommend this book over Quilts! Quilts!! Quilts!!! (McClun & Nownes) and Quilter's Complete Guide (Fons & Porter) as a book for those starting out as well as a refresher for experienced quilters. It doesn't go in to blocking a quilt, but that is a skill beyond what I think is appropriate for a beginner to need to know.

Magical Fabric Art a wonderful book for the beginner to expert. Ms. Scarpa walks you through each step and enables you to start your magical project on the most desirable moon and day of the week. Whether your project is 8"x10" or a quilt for your King size bed, this book is packed with the information you need for your work turn into an enhanced magical talisman. She gives the beginner example rituals for dedicating their work as well as explaining candle magic, Chinese ideograms, gemstone use, deities, spells for attracting love, harmony, and protection. On top of all this wonderful information she includes the idea of turning your sewing chest into a workbox of power. Whether the reader is looking for a spell for healing, protection, attracting love or just increasing personal power, Ms. Scarpa has delivered it in this book! I, personally, do not see why one could not adapt her teachings in this book to include modifying and empowering business suits, protection on the hem of a child's shirt, or attraction symbols on your favorite out on the town outfit. Definitely a new way of thinking about ones personal fabric he or she wears daily! Thank you, Ms. Scarpa for sharing your traditions. RosaPearl, psychic/shaman

I'd always liked the idea of making a patchwork quilt but was reluctant to make the investment in the equiptment. Lynne's book convinced me and I've never looked back. Her explanations are crystal clear and the pictures accompanying every block show what you are aiming for. I can't wait until her next book is published!

beautiful quilts, interesting history
Helpful Votes: 19 out of 19 total.
Review Date: 2005-10-28
this is wonderful book. there's enough historical information for most quilters, many excellent color photos of historic welsh quilts with as much information about their makers as is known, and an extremely generous selection of traditional quilting patterns with instructions on how to draft them. the general quilting information is sufficient for intermediate quilters, but a bit sparse for an actual beginner.

the only drawback many quilters may find is that the projects that are offered, which are very beautiful and inspirational and have wonderful colorways, are SMALL. the largest is only 45" square. many are half that size. and, of course, the quilting patterns given are also small. anyone wanting to make even a twin sized quilt would have to get out paper and pencil, or a computer drafting program, and work out the measurements herself, and then re-size the quilting patterns, which are what give welsh quilts their identity. of course, anyone who makes miniature quilts will be thrilled.

wholecloth quilts are not really addressed.

all in all, this is a book that most quilters will enjoy and want. the quilting patterns alone are worth the price, while the gallery of antique and vintage quilts is stunning.
