This is a good book for beginners and beyond. The quilts are lovely and the instructions are detailed with pictures to help you. There are several that I want to make. This is a good one to add to your quilt library collection.

Darlene Zimmerman is a major contributor in the quilting industry. I bought this book because I know this veteran will always teach me something new. And her color combinations are divine.

This book has a chapter for each month of the year, and most chapters include a simple recipe, motivating quotation, or household tip. There is nothing too complicated here, and color schemes range from 2-tone to too fabulously floral.

You might be familiar with Ms. Zimmerman's name from some quilting tools she has developed (the Tri Tool and the Recs Tool) and these tools, along with The Easy Angle and The Companion Angle) are featured in the very helpful last section entitled "Tool Tutorials". You might be able to make the patterns without these tools, using some you already have, but they do indeed help trim up and size those triangles and rectangles.

My favorite design is the month of June's "Wild Roses", not only for the color combo, but also for the peaceful photograph of two Adirondack chairs looking over fields and hills. This could almost become a coffee table book if it ever left my sewing room!!

This is an excellent coffee table book with a breif discription of Little Quilts, and charming photos on ways to display miniture quilts. It has a few simple patterns and inspired me to create magical little quilts of my own. This small book is a perfect gift for a country quilter.

Being slightly biased (knowing Gail Hunt quite well and my mother,Pat White, being one of the artists in the book) I suppose that I am not the greatest critic for this book. Nonetheless I find this book to be beautifully and artistically put together. It is wonderful that someone finally took the time to recognize individual artists and their vastly different styles and techniques. Definately a two thumbs up!

A must-have quilting book!

This is my favorite quilting book. It shows numerous examples of gorgeous, zany, eye-popping, color-saturated contemporary quilts, and explains step-by-step how to achieve a similar result. I especially love the technique called Crazy Piecing, where you create shards of bright color that can be either totally wild or more controlled. Then you cut up your blocks and rearrange them into even more jazzy combinations. You are taught to select and use some fabrics that "do the work for you" by adding graphic patterns to your sashing and borders. Not surprisingly, the author was an art teacher, and indeed I have learned so much from this book about the use and control of color. Warning: this book will cause you to become an addictive fabric-collector, since the more types of fabric used in these quilts, the more crazy and beautiful they are! The silver lining, however, is that there is no fabric that can't be used here somehow; there is no fabric so "ugly" that it can't contribute some useful color or pattern somewhere. This book teaches you to be adept in using what you have; it's perfect for scrap-quilters.

Ten dynamic quilted projects

In Razzle Dazzle Quilts, experienced needlecrafter Judy Hooworth offers a "user friendly" instruction guide for creating ten dynamic quilted projects with single, double, and triple split blocks to give quilts a rich, complex look -- and no complicated sewing techniques. Clearly illustrated, easy-to-follow, step-by-step, illustrated instructions are enhanced with helpful sections on choosing colors using a color wheel, developing a color family, and the incorporation of patterned fabric. Bright and lively color palettes offer delightful variations on such traditional quilting favorites as Log Cabin, Courthouse Steps, and Nine Patch. Razzle Dazzle Quilts will prove a favorite and very welcome addition to any personal or community library quilting and needlecrafting reference collection.

Just recieved this exciting book on August 15, 2005. This book is out of print - bought it second hand. Why isn't this book in reprint! It's just fabulous for color and design for those looking for both a 'precision' graphic look or for a spontaneous and more playful 'painterly' result. Can't wait to play out some of these cool and inventive uses of colour with quite ordinary and easy blocks. Did I mention I was "satisfied"?!

Jennifer Chiaverini has a unique writing style that appeals to quilters and non-quilters alike. For those of us into quilting, the history she gives her books are soooo appealing. This book was set in the historical time of a quilt mentioned in an earlier book. Although it was not my favorite book in the series, I wouldn't want to miss it. I look forward to the next books from this author. Once you start the books, they are hard to put down; my only advise - don't start the book on a day when you need to accomplish big things, as it just might not happen.

I loved the blending of the contemporary story with that of the Underground Railroad. It speaks to a deep truth about how sometimes people have to take a stand against injustice, even at the risk of their own lives. I found the friendship between Gerda and Joanna and their commitment to their cause to be truly inspiring. I highly reccommend this book.

I really appreciate Pamela Mostek for coming up with such an informative and easy to use book! I love those big floral prints, but have never figured out what to do with them until now. Ms. Mostek shows respect for us quilters by stating many times that WE are the designers. Her instructions are clear and very easy to follow. The quilts all have alternate views, showing what a change in fabric or color intensity can do for the patterns. While the patterns look difficult, they are quite do-able, following the directions one step at a time. the quilts work up quickly and are ideal for a hurry up gift. Purchasing this book was definitely "a good thing" on my part.

The nuts and bolts of making the original "blended quilt"...

Quilters Yenter and McCloskey gave us the wonderful concept of the "blended quilt," and fine books and careful instructions on the subject. But for me, an absolute beginner, the question was how to put fabric with design at a very basic level. Mostek has given us a way to get to a colorful, contemporary interpretation of the concept of the "blended quilt" with some simple, yet amazing, methods. The projects are stunning and also shown with different colorways. After this, on to my own "blendings."

Recipes or Quilting Cross Reference

A metal recipe card holder with 6" x 3 ¾" cards decorated with yo-yo's and four different appliqué designs such as yo-yo flowers and a bunny will keep your recipes all in one place. The designs are from Ms. Diehl's Simple Seasons book.

There are 36 cards and six dividers to organize your recipes into meat, salad, dessert or whatever categories you choose. The cards are slightly laminated so spills will wipe off. The box, itself, has a quilt design on the sides and the bunny and flower/yo-yo appliqué on the top.

Not into recipes? Then why not use the box to organize your magazines? How? Use the cards to cross-reference where a particular pattern is. Fox example, if you have a Spring Tulip pattern in the book Simple Season by Kim Diehl, you can write this information on the cards and know exactly which book to go to for the pattern without having to search through you library of quilt books. You could even write the materials list on the card and then you only have to take the card to the fabric store instead of the whole book.

Either way, this box is a useful tool whether it is in your kitchen or sewing room. Get one for yourself or give one to a friend.

You can never have too many lap quilts and the eight projects presented in this book are yummy! The designs are accessible to novice and experienced quilters alike. Rotary cutting directions are given for quick preparation and most of the shapes are squares, rectangles, and half-square triangles. The fabrics that are used in the examples really "sell" the patterns. My favorites were "Americana Stars" and "Button Basket". I highly recommend this book!

This is the best quilting book I have bought yet. I have only been quilting for 3 years and these projects are both fun and easy. The instructions are very well written and are great for beginners and others. Each quilt is pictured on a seperate page by itself in great detail. I made the Americana Stars quilt as a gift for my cousin who just returned for the war and it was a great success! I am also in the process of making this quilt with different colors into a king sized bed quilt. The quilts are all throw sized but can easily be modified to make them larger or smaller. I am actually shopping to find other books by these authors. Few books I have found give such good instructions and clear pictures. I would recommend this book to anyone! Happy quilting!

My Favorite Quilting Book!!!
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-11-09
I have been quilting for about a year now, I've purchased several quilting books, and this is the one I keep coming back to.
This book has tons of blocks, divided into beginner, intermediate, and advanced categories. Each block is shown with variations, and each one has templates for 10", 12", or 14" blocks. The directions are extremely simple, just choose your block, decide on the size, and find your corresponding templates in the back!
For many of the templates, I was able to just measure them and use rotary speed cutting instead.
The thing I love most about this book is that you don't have any complicated patterns to follow. I just look through the blocks, pick what I want to use, and make my own design! I have made several table runners, as well as a few other projects.
I should add that the first 50 pages or so of the book is instructional in nature..., choosing color, sewing the binding, that sort of thing. So if you need that part, it is included! The rest of the book is just block after block, (100 in all, 1200 including the variations) followed by the templates!
Every time I start thinking about a new project, this is the first book I pick up! I will probably wear this book out and have to buy a new one!

What a wonderful book to inspire new and seasoned quilters. This book takes you step by step in planning a quilt along with yardages of various sizes of the same quilt. The quilt patterns are shown with various ideas for color usage and includes instructions for each variation. The patterns are arranged in order from easy to intermediate and would give you endless combinations for many quilts. The rotary method is fast which helps you to see your creation in less time. A treat to look at again and again!

Quilts for My Sister's House is one of my favorite Thimbleberries books. Lynette Jensen creates an excitement with color, shape, and simplicity. This book literally draws the projects in pictures leaving no doubts on assembling the projects. There is a nice variety of projects including quilts, tablerunners, pillows, tablecloth, wallhanging, throw, and even a childrens quilt. I've been quilting for thirty years and this book even inspires me to try some new colors and designs I haven't seen elsewhere. There are a few challenging projects, but the instructions are clear and easy to understand. I have quite a collection of quilt books. My best description of this book is that the use of color and design are unique and inspire you to create the quilts or projects. This book also includes a very helpful general instruction page located in the last pages of the book.

Even the most novice beginner can successfully accomplish any and all of these impressive quilting projects.
