A present for every day of the year!

I have recently become "addicted" to quilting and this calendar gives me a "present" of viewing beautiful quilt blocks each day of the year. I have already found several I want to make. The pages are colorful and I like how it shows you to cut the material and put the block together. The only thing more that I would like to see is a small picture of several of the blocks put together on a page to get a visual of what a quilt or wall hanging would look like made with that particular block.

A wonderful pairing perfect for 2008!

366 blocks for every day of the year include traditional, seasonal and holiday quilts in pages packed with full-color detail and cutting keys and a spiral binding to keep it all useful and together throughout the year. This is a fine quilter's desk calendar blending the practicality of a block calendar with the inspiration of a quilter's guide. A wonderful pairing perfect for 2008!

365 patterns plus a calendar!

Two things that every quilter needs is a calendar to keep track of when that quilt must be finished and ideas ---- LOTS OF IDEAS for making that quilt. If you have ever had "quilter's block" (that's like writer's block, hehe), then this calendar is a must for you.

There are 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 14, 15, 16 and 18 inch blocks so you have a chance to use all those leftover scrapes to create a block. No scrape is too small for this calendar! And if you make the one block featured each day by the end of the year you will have enough square to put together several quilt tops! We always say we are going to find more time to quilt and this calendar helps you do just that. One square doesn't take that long to put together!

There are themes such as Valentines and Easter. There are appliqué and straight piecing. There are straight and curved pieces. AND the back of the calendar gives you pages of basic instructions plus templates needed to create the squares. If that is not enough, there is even an index of all the blocks in this wonderful calendar plus what size each block will be.

I don't know where else you can get 365 blocks in 6 x 6 x 1 ½ inches of space. It is definitely a calendar I will use over and over again even if I don't mange to get once block made each day! Be sure to get one for yourself or a quilting friend.

I had been using a library copy of The Quilter's Recipe Book to make my first quilts---four of them! This book helped me greatly and I finally decided to take the plunge and buy it. It's my trusted companion as I make my quilts.

From cutting blocks and varying squares to handling shapes, this is the perfect book to begin with

Making a quilt is like baking a cake: the best choice for beginners are clear directions, ingredients lists, and templates which simplify projects - all of which are accompanied by gorgeous color photos of 100 finished results in The Quilter's Recipe Book: All The Ingredients You Need To Create Over 100 Fabulous Quilts. A large introductory section covering tools and techniques surveys both equipment and special options such as applique, while the second half of Quilter's Recipe Book focuses on quilt projects. From cutting blocks and varying squares to handling shapes, this is the perfect book to begin with.

A great first quilting book

As a beginning quilter, I've been more inspired by the colors and quilt blocks in this book than in any other. The step-by-step "recipes" are a lifesaver for someone who's not sure where to start and make even the more challenging patterns seem accessible. The section on quilting techniques is not as in-depth as in some other books, but this book would be a more-than-adequate accompaniment to a basic quilting class or a beautiful supplement to a more comprehensive quilitng guide.

I got this book as a present for my mother who has taken up quilting as she has recently become a grandmother. She loves it and said it was an excellent resource. She had been using another book but switched to this one and said it was better than the one she had been using. She was having difficulty with certain stiches and found this book very helpful in that regard. Highly recommended.

How-to for color design success

Review Date: 2008-02-26
I originally borrowed this book from the library but was so engaged with the exercises and worksheets that I had to order a copy of my own. This book is an excellent tutorial addressing color and fabric choices to help you make your quilt into what you were actually hoping for, whether it's calm, eye-popping, or traditional. The authors go through the color wheel, complementarity, hue, dominance, all in an easy interactive style using photographs of quilts as examples, as well as exercises and workbook pages. They also address variety in prints, floral, geometric, novelty, pattern size/scale, types of prints, etc. You can cut samples from your own fabric collection to cut and paste into a color wheel, complementary color pairs, and into index pages that are organized by color for a personalized "table of contents" of your own fabric collection to use when planning projects. I have found it to be such a great tool for choosing fabrics with success, which can be a scary "unknown" to those of us that aren't natural artists. Even if you feel you don't have an eye for color, you can do this.

I bought this book as a beginning quilter trying to read as much as I could about all aspects of quilting including color. To my surprise this book turned out to be one that, as people who read good novels say, " I couldn't put it down!" type of book. It's full of information and tips that you want to highlight constantly....and not just about color. A very good sampling of the important aspects of quilting and color written in an understandable AND enjoyable way....very encouraging.

This book was a wonderful surprise. I thought I was getting just a book on color, but this contains everything you need to know about piecing, applique, setting blocks, borders, binding, quilting, and more. And it has an entire section on color selection. It is easy to follow and very well diagrammed. I use this book 3-4 times a week.

Quilts and Parties and Recipes all in one

Review Date: 2007-06-22
A quilt book that has recipes, shower and other types of party ideas is a great idea. I do so love a book with more than one purpose and Quilting In The Country is that type of book. Each quilt brings another recipe for some wonderful food or party idea.

The first quilt shows a quick way to make the Bow Tie Block while the next quilt incorporates handprints! Farther on is a quilt out of Yo-Yo's and buttons. A felted tea caddy, a table runner, a memory quilt, a log cabin square with leaf printing, appliqué fall leaves, trip around the world, and Christmas Ornaments are all in this book to keep your interest going. So no matter what time of year you purchase this book, you will have a quilt and recipe or party idea for that season.

Each quilt is shown on a full page in color and the instructions are clearly written. There are graphics to help visualize what is being explained. There is a materials and cutting list as well. Six pages give you basic quilting instructions if you need a review and there is a resource list in the back if you are having trouble finding a certain supply.

There is no excuse one can give on why not to buy this book. It is appropriate no matter what the season and any quilter will enjoy making the quilts shown.

I was looking for a book to pass the time. I got lost for hours in this book and wished it was hundreds of pages more. The photos of the quiltmakers and the quilts are priceless. There is so much historical knowledge in this book, that I feel Mary Bywater Cross should be awarded an honorary doctorate degree in the history of quiltmaking and of the Morman Migration.

Quilts & Women of the Mormon Migrations are magnificent!

Review Date: 2001-01-01
This book is a remarkable history of the fabrics used & the styles chosen together with where the women were born, when they stitched the presented treasure, when & where they joined the Latter-Day Saints & when they made the migration westward.

Each quilt, no matter its condition, its purpose or the technical skill, leads to a compelling discovery of previously unknown women's lives. Witness the three lions in a circlet on which has been embroidered the British monarch's motto or the "Star Quilt" of Sage Richards Treharne Jones from Wales who came on her parents' mission, both of whom succumbed along the trail. Or Mary Mortensen Bjork's migration from Denmark & her lively "Crazy Patch Quilt"; or Christina Erika Forsgren Davis from Sweden & her plain & simple "Strip Quilt". Or Betsy Prudence Howard Bullock's "Peter and Paul Quilt" all the way from Bedfordshire, England. Or Matilda Robison King's "Washington Plume" applique on her way from Montgomery County, New York. Many women were members of the same Relief Society & so made several quilts with similar designs.

Mary Bywater Cross has done quilters, pioneers & women in general a profound service by her research, writing about & cataloging these fragile & beautiful works of art & comfort. There is something deeply connective about the fabrics & designs created by these intrepid & enduring women.

A must for anyone who loves quilting & history - do visit my site for my full review & eInterview with this quilt historian as well as other books on quilting.
