What an excellant book. This book is one of those books that you can sit down to glance through with your favorite hot beverage and a roaring fire feeling so relaxed. The patterns are inspiring as well and with all the wonderful fabrics out now they can be show cased by the patterns in this book. Last night I came home mentally exhausted from facts and figures all day. Decided that I needed a creative fix. Sat down and actually got a top all most together. The best therapy. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

I took a basic color and design class at a community college about a decade ago. We worked through similiar exercises to those in this book, but with paper, not with fabric as in this book. If you have wanted to take a basic color and design class at a college but don't have the time or resources, this is an excellent book. The only thing I like better about the college class is that you have a real person demanding your homework!

If you hated homework you won't like this book, but if you are willing to follow the instructions and trust the authors to lead you to new skills, you will come away from the lessons in this book with a better understanding of drawing and coloring ways to add to your personal style of making art quilts. I will do this and look forward to the experience!

Have "fresh" flowers all year round

This is another one of those patterns that are now coming in the wonderful resealable, plasticized packages. Why dress patterns never came this way is a good question! I love these patterns because I can pin them to my bulletin board or tape them to my design wall and never have to dig through the fabric on my cutting table to read them. The Flowers of Summer theme has four different flower types to appliqué on the quilt. Each flower "runs over" the square it is in and onto the background of the quilt.

A materials list is provided right on the back of the package so you don't have to dig through the pattern to find out what you will need if you go fabric shopping. It also tells you the finished quilt size, the finished pieced block size and the finished appliqué block size.

Inside you will find, clear instructions on how to make the quilt from cutting, appliquéing and assembly including the binding and quilting. There are lots of grahics to show what each step is talking about. The appliqué patterns are full size so no running to the copy store is needed.

An extra is included with this quilt pattern. A Color-Palette Appliqué booklet helps you learn how to choose colors for the flowers. It also shows how to appliqué the pieces and has a color value indicator chart so you will understand what is printed on the pattern. If you are an appliqué quilter, this pattern will keep you happy and busy.

Grow flowers on your wall or bed

Review Date: 2008-05-19
More patterns are coming out in packaging like dress patterns - everything in one re-sealable package. THE SEASONS IN BLOOM is one of these patterns. The plasticized envelope has the materials list right on the back, plus it lists the finished block and quilt size.

Inside, you will find pattern sheets that you can tack up on the wall or bulletin board. No more hunting for the book under the fabric you are cutting. These sheets contain all the information you will need to create this quilt including full sized templates of the four appliqué flower patterns and the border flowers too.

The instructions are clearly written and contain illustrations to help explain the written instructions. There is even an "extra" included. It is a booklet entitled "Color-Palette Appliqué". It explains how to gather a palette of colors and the best way to put the appliqué together.

There is another bonus. If you don't want to create a whole quilt, make just one of the four panels of flowers and use it as a wall hanging. You could even create all four flower pieces and use them as a "four seasons" wall hanging. So many ideas, so little time! Grab your copy and start "growing" your flowers.

Sheila Wintle's Color Palette Applique patterns are not only absolutely beautiful, they are the best value I have found in the marketplace. Full size patterns, guidance as to value placement, and helpful instructions for choosing suitable fabrics are all included for an extremely reasonable price. I have all three of her patterns, and I eagerly await any new ones she produces.

-----Kaffe Fassett has a wonderful perception of COLOR-----

Review Date: 2007-05-27
In A COLOURFUL JOURNEY, K. Fassett had nine designers, including himself create over twenty patchwork quilts. The fabrics used in the quilts are from the Kaffe Fassett Fabric Collection. That collection of fabrics is shown in the back of the book so that the reader can locate the name or Id number of the individual patterns.

The quilts in the book are indeed a vivid variety of colors. In looking over the offerings of the quilt artists, I had several favorites. Kaffe Fassett designed quite a few and from his collection I liked Handkerchief Corner Pastel which is an updated handkerchief quilt. Mosaic Columns that has a chintz look and Jubilee Gardens is like a Tiffany lamp with many small pieces. Pete and Paul's quilt by Roberta Horton has a stylish elegance. The Strippy Chevrons quilt by Susan Druding gave me a happy feeling with its cheerful colors as did the quilt made by Sally R. Davis which she called Co-Ordinated Chaos Quilt. The instructions for making the quilts are included in the book. Most of the quilts were photographed at an 1860 house in Hastings, England which gave a nice backdrop to the images.

This book also contains a short article that profiles the friendship between Anna Williams and Katherine Watts. Katherine has even written a book about Anna and her wonderful quilts that have helped to inspire a new interest in quilting

Fassett has produced some wonderful books and I've enjoyed several. My favorite is WELCOME HOME: KAFFE FASSETT because it seems to be the most personal of his books. Other books not to be missed are: GLORIOUS PATCHWORK and PASSIONATE PATCHWORK.

Although I am a "child of the city", I must say that this elegant book gives me some pause. Not in this lifetime, but perhaps in the next, I will be fortunate enough to find myself among such lovely people doing such lovely things. See for yourself!

While the "how-to" part of this book is important and useful, I especially like the sense of community that is communicated by the numerous quotes. (I would have enjoyed even more quotes.) The photographs in the book are beautiful, and the quality of the paper (it's nice and heavy) ensures that the book can withstand lots of use.

Community Quilts

This unique book records 25 years of quilting by a special group of women who live in a close knit community in rural North Carolina. These quilts were made for friends and neighbors, births and anniversarys, marriages and moving away. They are works of art. CQ gives much insight into the planning and production of these quilts and the recipients pleasure in receiving them. If you are interested in knowing just how to put a quilt together, this book will help you step by step. The group actually made a quilt to demonstrate for the book. The quilt will be donated to raise money for a new county library. The beautiful color photos and heartwarming stories make this book very appealing to quilters and others alike.

This book opens up your eyes to color. I love the way the author has used photos of buildings with interesting color combinations to show us examples of various color schemes. The color wheels shown with each quilt throuhout the book help to explain the use of color and aid in expanding ones sense of adventure with color. The quilts shown in the book are fun and appear to be easy. I love seeing several examples of the same quilt, but carried out with different color schemes and different layouts. I would like to make each one of the quilts in the book!

I have really enjoyed reading this book. I found it very informative and enjoyable and plan to use several of the patterns. I have purchased an additional copy to be part of a table decoration that I am making for the annual fall meeting of the Utah Quilt Guild. I've purchased about 15 books in the last 6 months and have enjoyed this one the most. I think it will sell very well. Our Guild has over 1000 members, and hopefully the book will get exposure at the meeting from vendors that are there. One problem I had was that I would have liked to have the Indian hatchet pattern printed in the book and it was not. If anyone knows where I could get a copy of it I would appreciate them letting me know.

I really love this book. I keep going back to it again and again, just to enjoy the colorful quilts! There is much to inspire here, and don't think that it is geared only towards the 30's reproduction fabrics. You can use the quilts featured in this book as inspiration for using any fabrics you may have in your stash. And Mary's no-fuss approach to machine quilting will help you finish all those un-quilted tops you may have. A must-have for any passionate quilter!

You've got all these quilts! What are you going to do with them? Beautiful color plates show how the movers and shakers in the quilt making and quilt collecting world display quilts around the house. I was particularly intrigued with the chapter on Sewing Studios. They are warm, homey places that employ many antique pieces for storage and decoration. And every idea doesn't require a show place of a home either. On page 35--they show several old quilts tucked into an easy chair and covering a table--it would look cosy anywhere!
