I admit I am a quilt book addict, and when in doubt, I buy it. Many books turn out to be of little value, but this book presents important concepts that every quilter, especially beginning quilters, would find helpful. We know the simplest design can be a knockout if the colors are eye-catching and somewhat of a surprise; this book shows you how to make it happen. Joen presents these important concepts in an easy to understand way, with plenty of pictured quilts as examples. It's a reference book that quilters would use often when planning a new project. I keep a color wheel taped to my sewing room wall; this book will encourage you to do the same.

This book is an excellent resource book not only for quilting but for other forms of artwork. The author gives myriad examples of color interplay. I learned not only about complementary colors but aslo about triads and other color settings. Although the author provides photos of quilts to illustrate certain points, this is not simply a dictionary of quilts; it is truly a book about the use of color. Not only do I review this book when planning a new quilting project, but I peruse the pages just for fun, even when I don't have a specific project in mind. This book is a "must-have" for quilters.

Excellent! Having been a photographer, I had some study in color, but this booklet goes well beyond my basic study. At the same time it is well written, in an well illustrated, easy-to-understand, language for the quilter or general textile art worker.

1/4 Aviation, 3/4 Fairytale

Review Date: 2008-11-03
I would actually like to give this 3 and a half stars. When I found this book, I was expecting more of a woman meets pilot, becomes pilot herself kind of story, but instead it turned out to be a fairytale with a lot of great insight into Charles Lindbergh. The heroine is a farm girl with a disability and when Lindbergh lands in her wheat field, a romance blooms. The book proceeds to be a mixture of fantasy and historical detail both, offering a look at life in the twenties thru forties and the beginnings of aviation without being biographical or dull. However, the main characters were all too good to be true. They were all too sweet, kind, and accomodating to be realistic. There was a lot of religious stuff also, leading me to wonder if this is a Christian book and maybe should be categorized as such. All in all, a good read, and I would love to see what this author could do with a story about Amelia Earhart.

I absolutely loved Bostwick's other book, River's Edge and was eager to read this book. Like River's Edge, this book is beautifully written and has wonderful, expressive characters. However, the first 100 pages contain such a sappy love story and I was so disappointed. Once I got past that part, it became a much better read and surprised me with a few plot twists. All in all, a good book but not 5 stars.

I'm a tad late reading this book but it didn't diminish from the wonderful story and great writing.
Filled with emotion and characters that felt like I knew them. I was very impressed with the way the author took a real person and weaved a clever plot of fiction.
Now I need to "catch up" and get the rest of Bostwick's books that have been released since this one.
If you haven't read Fields of Gold yet....don't wait any longer!

Loved it, loved it, loved it. I couldn't put it down. I am an avid quilter, so I loved reading how she made that into a business for herself. The book includes great themes, love, true love, friendship, hope, hopes crushed, and a few surprises to boot. I look forward to reading her other novels and am excited to have found another author to list among my favorites.

This is the first craft book that I actually read. I mean, I usually just skim these sorts of books for what I need, but this book was so intriguing, inspired and well-written, that I was compelled to lay in bed and read the whole book. It is just wonderful. There are some nice instructions for those that want to make similar projects, but the beauty of this book is the inspiration it gives for coming up with your own unique pieces. Incorporating my photography with my sewing has become a goal of mine, and this book gives me basically all I need to get started on doing so. I HIGHLY recommend this one.

It's a winner.

If I never picked up a needle, I'd still want to have this book. It is beautifully written and photographed. Instructions are very clear and make it all seem so simple. This book certainly takes the fear out of the idea of quilting. Lesley has done a fabulous job blending the arts of quilting and collage. Pages and pages of wonderful photographs to inspire you to pick up that needle and head for the scrap bag.

Review Date: 2006-03-31
Traditionally, quilt making truly IS a form of fabric collage.
How cool, to see the directions in which narrative quilting is moving!
It's expertly shown to those of us lucky enough to run across this swell volume by Ms. Riley. And we realize from the eye candy, ideas, inspiration & techniques illustrated in this charming (& nicely made!) book, that it's not the size of a project that guarantees its impact. I especially love the "Gallery of Quilted Memories" beginning on page 110. Each example is a small treasure of the four elements I listed above & something to which I will continually return.

The quilts in here are beautiful. They are also pretty simple to make. The patterns can be done quickly and I'm a beginner quilter. Like other people mentioned, the pictures are very helpful in selecting fabric and they're big and glossy so it's easy to see what the quilt will turn out like. This is by far the best of the Quilts for Baby books that Ursula has published. I can't wait till she puts out another one.

Most of my books only get used once or twice, but I've made 5 of the projects from this book and don't see an end in sight. Awesome presentation (fun to read and browse through) and good value (very versatile).

Really informative! A must have for your library! The author carefully, thoroughly explains EVERYTHING for all skill levels. Beautiful pictures highlight the steps. I appreciate that this book is spiral bound; makes instructions easier to access as you learn the technique. I have been sewing clothing for many years and just started quilting. This book is so helpful on many levels, (needles, thread, stabilizers, techniques); your projects will immediately take on the look of a highly skilled crafter. I consider her THE expert on this topic; machine appliqué from A-Z is all here. Highly recommended!!

Mastering Machine Applique: The Complete Guide Including Invisible Machine Applique, Satin Stitch, Blanket Stitch and Much More

If I could only purchase one book about machine applique, this would be my choice. Harriet goes into excellent detail about adjusting and setting up the sewing machine for applique, explains how to select and use necessary supplies, and provides clear, detailed instructions and step by step photos for a variety of styles of machine applique.

Harriet fills in the missing blanks left in many other resources and goes beyond the basics, while being clear enough for a beginner to use. I highly recommend this book.

Whether you've been quilting for years, or a "newbie" like me, you will like this book (a lot!). My daughter first showed The Quilter's Catalog to me, I checked it out from the library, and I had to get one of my own! It will take you months to absorb all the information, web sites, tips, everything! Every time I open it, I find something new. This is going to be the perfect Christmas present for my "quilting guru" (my next door neighbor). Although she's been a quilter for years, and probably knows just about all there is to know about quilt making, I'm sure she will enjoy this book as much as I do. Cheers for author Meg - this is one of my best craft books - and I have a BUNCH of them!

I have a library of quilt books, but I couldn't believe how useful this one is, and you can also sit and read it like a novel. It's extremely well-researched and contains a wealth of resources that I've never seen under one cover. I find this book to be a very good "how to" reference. It's one you should read through after you've been stitching awhile too - to pick up those tidbits you're not doing in your own sewing. Unfortunately, it's bound with stitching and glue (I think) and the paper eventually gets cut through on a page that is left open. I had the book open for a few days on my cutting area - I was doing binding and there is a good explanation of ending it. The binding pages simple fell out - they were "cut". Now I will have to see if I can get the book "drilled" with 3 holes and put it into a binder. That has never happened to me before, so I can only think that the publisher choose a poor binding method.

Linda Taylor's book, The Ultimate Quilt to Longarm Machine Quilting, became my teacher after purchasing my new longarm quilter at the 2007 Houston International Quilt Festival. Quilting friends highly recommend the book and the book became my teacher and companion for the past six weeks. The book clearly defines terms and how the machines work. Quick References decipher quilt jargon, how to load a longarm, what tools you need most, defines quilt jargon, pantographs, tips on how to start a business as a longarm quilter and how to avoid longarm body problems when quilting too long without exercise. I am a long time sewer and a three-year quilter. I am a retired teacher that learns most by reading and then by watching. This book is well written, has good photography to support the techniques and a great book for the new longarm quilter as well as a experienced quilter. My book is already dog-eared and showing the wear. IT IS A GOOD BOOK!
