Over 130 pages of great instruction and realistic photos that show that anyone who takes the time can do applique. Not only are the designs that you can Xerox for patterns crisp, but the instruction is easy to read and follow. And the photos are exact size, so you see what you will get when you are done.

I liked the book because it also says that we can choose our own material, which suits our own desires, where some books say you have to have this or that type of material made by this ir that maker, and you end up running all over the place and come home discouraged and throw your hands up and say *&%#@+ and vow never to try and do applique again.

This is the book that can help you become less discouraged and a success at a wonderful art form.

This is one of my all time favourite quilting books....in fact I like it so much I emailed Mimi Dietrich with my compliments, not something I have ever done before. (She wrote me a lovely note back by the way.)

The instructions are clear. The quilts are interesting and varied; and each quilt can be successfully made in a variety of fabrics for a completely different look.

It is not uncommon for me to glance through a quilt book and see a pattern or two I might like to try, but then usually I put that book back on the shelf and select another. Bed and Breakfast Quilts caught my interest with each flip of the page....and I have made 4 quilts just from this one purchase. It even gave me the confidence to try some applique which resulted in very pleasing results!

I love it and recommend it...definitely a KEEPER in my quilting library. And in my opinion it should be on the beginner to the advanced quilter's book shelf too.

"Bed and Breakfast Quilts" contains photographs and detailed construction plans for a variety of quilts from various Bed and Breakfast establishments. Each is photographed on location so you can get an idea of how it might fit into a particular room decor. Mimi Dietrich also includes some background and thoughts about each of the quilt designs at the beginning of the book before taking the reader off on a more detailed look at them. The directions for each quilt are complete with patterns, directions, materials, cutting, assembly, and finishing instructions. They often even include ideas on pillowcases to match. After each quilt she includes a short recipe for a favorite breakfast snack or drink.

A couple of my favorite quilts in the book are Starry Night and Garden Comfort. Garden Comfort is not one of the designs that I would typically think of when I conjure up thoughts of a quilt but it is absolutely beautiful. "Bed and Breakfast Quilts" is a highly recommended read for anyone interested in quilting or quilt designs.

This is a truly remarkable book! I wish I had it when I first learned to quilt years ago. Loaded with great tips and beautiful photographs, this book will not just collect dust on your shelves with all your other quilting "tips" books; it truly is a rare find. I have put several of the tips and tricks presented into use already and it has made my quilting quicker, and more fun. Great gift for beginners (send it along with some fabric!)

This is a sumptuous book. I would buy it just for the photographs and quality of printing. I would categorize it as both a quilt history lover's book and a how to book. The patterns and projects included relate to English frame quilting, and American quilting of the late 18th century and early 19th. But the book is also very liberating in that it shows how to break away from what we have learned about color and contrast to achieve a very different look which can be traditional or very modern indeed. The introduction is well worth rereading and the entire book will evoke a great deal of thought. If you love fabric, buy the book soon as some of the fabrics shown are still in the shops.

This book is for anyone in love with turn of the century quilts, and turn of the century fabric. McClosky and Yenter have great patterns, but also give tips on what types of blocks and what types of fabric make beautiful blended quilts, and that is what really is important to those of us who like to be inspiried and then design our own quilts. This book is great for beginners (easy patterns, and the fabric choices help hide seams that don't match perfectly) and experienced quilters alike.

i bought this book for a quilting class, and i really like the authors' concepts.

i love, and am making, quilts with the familiar high contrast graphic traditional block patterns. but seeing the quilts in this book has been an inspiration. i am looking at the fabrics in my stash with a new eye, and also thinking of using the authors' ideas for clothing, some of which is shown in a photograph of one of the authors and her granddaughter.

this book is going to be useful for many, many years. i recommend it to any quilter or anyone who makes clothes.

Great for Applique border designs

The value in this book is in Chapter 2.

Chapter 1 covers the general steps to creating a quilt. Anyone who has made a quilt will find they already know this information, but beginners might really appreciate it. (There are other books for this information, though.) Chapter 2 is where she gets into borders and it really is a "border primer". She covers every possibility from no border to stretching the design into the border, single & multiple bands, squares, triangles, and appliqued borders. In Chapter 3, she covers scalloped edging, prairie points, piping, and dogtooth edges.

Chapter 4 is the Gallery and Patterns section. As there are only 3 or 4 *pieced* border designs and since this is the lion's share of the book, I was a little disappointed. All the rest (of 17 total patterns) are for applique. Beautiful and varied, but applique is not my thing...yet.

If you're looking for some really nice applique border designs, this is definitely the book for you. Just xerox and go!

Review Date: 2008-05-24
This was a great book to extend handprint artwork from our Kindergarten class towards a quilted school auction project. We were unable to find the novelty prints for each handprint picture, but the pictures in the book gave us inspiration for solid colors to use in our project. The pictures and design ideas were great ideas for handprints on paper too.
However, instructions on detailing included using glue before assembling the pieces within the quilt. It would have been better to assemble the quilt, quilt some areas, THEN glue items such as rick-rack and google eyes. The rick-rack was difficult on some machines to quilt through or around; the google eyes did not do well with the ironing required during quilt assembly.

Our elementary school is celebrating 50 years of learning this year. We are in the process of creating a commemorative quilt to be hung in the school. The ideas in this book are outstanding! Instead of designing the squares ourselves, we selected areas of learning for each classroom and asked the children to submit their ideas. The outcome was incredible. The committee plans to use the ideas in this book to embellish childrens' handprints for the classroom squares designed by the students.

Memory quilts for young and old alike

I remember making "hand turkeys" as a craft project in Kindergarten. I was so proud to bring it home to Mom. Now you can go back to your childhood with Marcia Layton's book "Calendar Kids".

With a little bit of paint, some fabric and a small child, you can make wonderful quilts. Aww heck - why not a big child??? Use your own handprints! Either way, this book gives you ideas for quilts to make for every month of the year. Make seasonal quilts - like the four seasons; make a whole year quilt - something for each month of the year or use your imagination and make themed quilts such as beach or a Christmas quilt. Anyway you choose to do it you will have a quilt full of memories.

The first twelve pages give you all your basic instructions such as the best way to create the handprint itself and then ideas on embellishments and how to finish the quilt. Then come the quilts themselves. Each quilt, of which there are a Baker's Dozen, has a color photo, a materials list, fabric measurements, which handprint block to use and the best way to put the quilt together all the way through to finishing it.

There are "Special Design Tips" scattered throughout the book to give you some extra ideas on using the handprints to make other themes for the quilts. There is a four page gallery of quilts which will add even more ideas to your list of "want to makes". Whether you make the quilts as a project to include your child or grandchild or make them as a memory quilt using your own hands, they will be ones full of memories to keep forever.

These publishers are the greatest. They consistently top the competition. This book offers so many visual gifts to its readers, and since the quilts are small, the projects are producable within a reasonable amount of time. I just let my eyes meander through the book, and I am inspired to get back to the sewing machine. It is written in a friendly style, without the typical clinical and off putting language that we find in so many other quilt books. The quilts are photographed so clearly with such vibrant colors. I dare anyone to read this book, and not turn directly to her fabric stash and begin dreaming of the next project!

Have you ever been to a fabric store, spotted a panel print of a favorite subject, brought it home, then wondered what on earth to do with it? This book helps the quilter who wants to explore quilting using fabrics with, for example, panel pictures, large-scale prints, or border prints. The author goes way beyond simply quilting up the panel as it was cut from the bolt. She shows you ways to explore cutting, setting, and quilting your panel fabrics in ways that enhance and preserve the original artwork of the fabric. I especially enjoyed seeing one quilting pattern completed with two different fabrics. Her instructions are clear, concise, and utilize color so that even the beginner quilter can successfully complete a quilt using those great panel fabrics. You'll never shop for fabric the same way again!
