There is a large variety of projects in this book. The instructions are easy to follow. It is very fun to cut and shuffle the fabric. I took the book to my guild last retreat and a couple of us finished a quilt in about 5 hours, the results very different but still nice. With the tecnique you do not have to fuzz with matching all corners perfectly. Even doing curves end up fun... We did find some errors between the pictures and the written instructions, nothing mayor.

Quilting is my passion. Like most quilters, I have many "WIP"s. That would be "works in progress." My new resolution is to find projects that look wonderful but are things I can actually finish without too much stress. This great book offers many opportunities. The author writes very clear instructions. My creativity is really on the rise after reading the book.

What a treasure to find "One Of A Kind Quilt Labels". Thea Nerud brings innovative ideas with clear, precise directions and beautiful illustrations to make every label personal and beautiful. She has given us the templates to exquisitely personalize our own quilts. Recipients of my quilts are reminded of the love and care that was sewn into their quilt by reading their unique and informative label throughout the life of the quilt. Quilt artist, Thea, has inspired me to go beyond the ordinary, making labels that reflect my committment to quality quilting, and create a legacy for those I love and sew for. Bonnie Upchurch

I love this book! Ms. Nerud presents a wealth of unique ideas for all skill levels. The writing is excellent, the directions concise and easily understood, and the book itself is visually appealing. Her suggestions are easily adaptable for other sewing projects in need of a personal touch that only a one of a kind, specially created "made by.." label can provide.

Wow! what a fun book! I will never make boring labels again. I love the little three dimensional animals for children's quilts. The section on making labels for old quilts was wonderful, especially with the photos of the quiltmakers and the people who got the quilts. A large number of the labels in the book were printed on the computer. I will try that and I want to try the crayon labels also. Might even try the cross stitch one....

Quilts should be labeled so that they become heirlooms. Thea Nerud's mission is to get ALL quilts labeled, and offers several ideas for attractive and informative labels. Thea shows how to transfer photographs and lettering onto washable fabric labels that become a permanent part of the quilt. The lettering can be computer generated. She's done a great job and shows several tested and illustrated techniques.

Very useful, even if you'll never make one of the examples!

I recently learned the value of a quilt label. I made a quilt for my 10-year-old grandniece, a kid who hasn't had much to call "mine." She liked the quilt, but she _loved_ the label, which said, "Made just for [name] by great-aunt Esther." ("Look, Mom! Look what it says!") Yes, I included the date and my full name, but the "just for me" value made it obvious that this girl will keep her quilt until it wears out.

So yes: you really should label every quilt!

I've had this book for a couple of years, and I've been loathe to review it because I haven't actually made any of the charming quilt labels that the author teaches you to make. It feels rather like someone who makes pound cakes trying to review a fancy wedding-cake book. But after the aforementioned Label Experience, I feel compelled to suggest that you do get (or at least paw through) this book. I learned a lot, from just the first few pages; until then, I hadn't realized that there were options for ironing-on labels or print-to-fabric.

That single "aha!" helped me improve my label-creation skills immeasurably (the previous efforts involved really ugly embroidery). For instance, the label for my niece's wedding quilt included a printed (well, ironed-on) engagement photo of the couple. Yeah, that went over well, too.

This book has several delightful examples of innovative quilt labels, which include a fabric "envelope" in which the details of an older quilt might be stored. I've looked through the book several times without making any of them, but saying, "Oh, isn't that nice!" every time. I just stick with my pound cake, I guess.

If you're ready to make your quilts even more special, this book will definitely help you. But even if you aren't -- One-of-a-Kind Quilt Labels will help you improve your existing skills and it'll inspire you to make an effort to improve them. I'm glad I got this book; I think you'll like it, too.

As well as great written history of liturgical art. I bought this for a friend, and instead kept it and ordered another one to be sent. As a liturgist and director of music, this is a MUST to have in your library.
Anyone inerested in the art of the Church would benefit from this book. The pictures are wonderfully clear, well detailed and a treasure of ideas and inspiration.

Every time I look at my copy, I find more to give thanks for. Our church has benefitted from the Banners and Quilts we have created, adapted from ideas we found in the book. My dream is to find it reprinted and get it for some friends. I have been fortunate enough to see the cover quilts at an Ecclesiastical exhibit and they are even more beautiful in person. This is a book that should be in everyone's library.

It show a way to combine your love of God and love of fabric/quilting/needlework. Some of us shouldn't sing in public, other for one reason or other don't want to or can't participate in front of the congregation, this is a way to do something to show you care

A compendium of Christian liturgical soft art.

The Patchwork Pilgrimage) by Jill Liddell is a compendium of Christian liturgical art, especially quilted banners, altar cloths, and vestments. Nearly every page has at least one color plate depicting a church decoration found in Scandinavia, England, France, the U.S., Canada, Australia, or New Zealand. Though most are contemporary (1980's and 90's), examples from as far back as the Middle Ages are also included.

Jill Liddell's descriptions of the individual pieces are supplemented by Andrew Liddell's historical overview of church art. The sections entitled "Ways and Means" and "Christian Signs and Symbols" offer suggestions for quilters who might like to try their hands at liturgical art. Christian quilters will benefit from having this inspiring book in their collections.

I've been quilting for several years and had been discouraged when I tried paper foundation piecing because my brain just doesn't work that way. This book changed all that. The stars are astonishing and they're very easy to do. I've bought many quilting books and this is, without a doubt, the very best. I hope she writes another soon!

I have always wanted to paper piece, but it seemed daunting. I bought this book and it helped immenseley. The instructions were easy to understand and follow. The strip piecing speeds up the process. The only downfall is that you do waste more fabric than with other processes. However, I combined this method with regular paper piecing (I also bought the book "Show Me How To Paper Piece) and it worked beautifully. Together these books made it easy for a beginner paper piecer and I successfully created a queen size quilt for my brother!

Even if you've never tried paper piecing before, you'll want to have this book. It takes paper piecing to a whole new level, and simplifies the process. For experienced piecers, you'll be amazed at how much faster you can make stunning blocks with Peggy's revolutionary method.

The book is exceptionally well-illustrated. Step-by-step photos walk you through the technique and explain it so clearly that it's the next best thing to taking a workshop with Peggy herself.

You are sure to find more than one quilt you'll want to make from the project section, and the gallery of quilts will inspire you with plenty of ideas. Even though they look complex, the projects are still easy to make, even for beginners.

Definitely a book every quilter should have!

The book deserves 5 stars for the photographs of the stunning Africa-inspired quilts, but 3 for the lousy directions. The first half of the book is a photgraphic display of artistic quilts, sure to inspire anyone. Many different styles of quilting, lots of applique, all featuring gorgeous African fabrics and motifs. The second half has directions for 12 different quilts. The photographs are excellent and most of the projects include a photographic close-up of part of the quilt. Some of the projects would be suitable for beginners, but the directions assume that you either have another source of information on how to quilt, are incomplete, or are incorrect. A number of quilts require applique, and the brief directions in the book are not sufficient. Some of the directions are totally incorrect--so read carefully and think through the project. Use the photographs as inspiration for your own design. The applique templates are great, so between the templates and the photographs, there is plenty to inspire you.

Even after 14 other exhibits of "the best of contemporary quilts," the quilts gathered for Quilt National 2007 and showcased in the print version of the entries, also entitled Quilt National 2007, still represent innovative ideas and techniques. These works defy the adage that "there's nothing new under the sun," for they adhere to the definition of quilt, yet take that form to new levels.

This, the first exhibit since the passing of Hilary Morrow Fletcher, who guided the project for 23 years, is truly a feast for the eye, albeit rendered as ink on paper.

The textile treasures run the gamut from the realistic/pictorial to the wildly abstract and include sculptural pieces as well. The content taps into nature, the psyche, politics, urban life, and other subjects both deep and simple, but all rendered thoughtfully.

If you can't view the actual show (on display through September 3, 2007, at the Dairy Barn and then traveling in part or entirely to St. Louis, MO; Houston, TX; Lancaster, PA (two exhibits); and Bloomingdale, IL, through 2009), then by all means visit it vicariously through the pages of this book.

Quilt National 07: More than a catalog

Review Date: 2007-06-12
This book is subtitled "The Best of Contemporary Quilts" - and that's an understatement. Quilt National is *the* art quilt show in the world, and the jurors have again done an amazing job of whittling the 1151 slides from 545 artists, from 45 states and 19 countries other than the USA down to just 83 quilts. I would love to see the show hanging - but the book is the next best thing to being there.

This book has been thoughtfully designed and produced - as were the other two Quilt National books I own (Art Quilts: A Celebration: 400 Stunning Contemporary Designs and Quilt National 2005: The Best in Contemporary Quilts (Quilt National).

There's enough white space to let the quilts stand on their own, and the photography shows the beauty of the quilting stitches featured in some of these artworks. The book's design flows beautifully from each page to the next - each double page spread is sensitively composed.

Each time I turned the page I said "this, THIS is my favourite quilt of the show" - only to be awestruck at the next page turn and a new favourite. Whether the artists chose a traditional bed quilt format, or ventured into the realm of 3-D textile sculpture; whether using very old surface design techniques such as dye or the latest in computer manipulated and printed imagery, every one of the 83 quilts in this book is stunning.

The artists statements accompanying the photos are concise and add insight to the maker's thought processes. There's no long winded waffle, just clear statements about the works. Very refreshing!

Anyone who doubts that quilts should indeed stand beside "fine art" in galleries needs this book - it will surely change their perception.

I have all the Quilt National books. Although they are good reminders of the biannual show, the photography cannot capture the unique nature of the works. This year, I have also heard of a complaint from one of the entrants that one piece was not photographed in its entirety. Nonetheless, if you can't get there to see the show in person, the book is your next best alternative.

This book is one of the most inspirational books on quilting I've read. Mary's approach to applique is inspirational and has gotten my creative juices flowing.

I own both this book and "Whimsies & Whynots" by Mary Lou Weidman - in Whimsies & Whynots there are more large quilt examples to look at, while Quilted Memories has more smaller projects. Both have tons of beautiful examples of Mary's applique quilts, but if I had to choose between the two I'd pick Whimsies & Whynots because there seem to be more quilts in it.

But, this is still a 5-star book, well worth your money.

Her method is clear and sets just enough structural boundaries so the neophyte will not feel overwhelmed. Practice projects will help you to warm up.

As a beginner quilter and novice computer user, I found this book to be well worth sitting up late last night, eagerly devouring the wisdom that Heim and Hansen have compiled. Using simple, concise directions and "down to earth" discussion, they have covered all of the topics that formerly cowed me into believing that I should've lived 100 years ago! Now I'm eager to integrate my love of quilting with the new love of computers and the information superhighway! The yellow pages of web addresses are especially useful to someone located in the wilds of Northern Maine. Often, internet access is my only contact with the outside world! A simple comparision of the available software programs have helped me to narrow my search for the next acquisition - quilting software!

I must commend Heim and Hansen for taking such a complex world as computers and reducing it to concepts the average quilter can easily understand and follow. It is also a nice feature that this book encompasses both the PC world and that of the Mac usuers. A goodly portion of the book is dedicated to walking the reader through the processes Gloria Hansen used to design her award winning quilts. This will inspire many who have been daunted by the process. The authors analyze many of the software programs available giving insight to their use in design as only seasoned quilters could. They also discuss so many aspects of printing, scanning and the internet with a wondeful section of Internet Yellow Pages chock full of exceptional web sights from quilters from traditional, through contemporary to art quilters.

We each play our own games, in our own way, with our own fabric. Be warned, this is not for beginners. The beginner in my class left in tears after about the first hour. A beginner, who needs more direction, would probably never start. This book is for a quilter who wants to create her own fiber art, but needs something more than a great pile of fabric and a blank slate.

I am a quilter who absolutely loves playing with fabric and hates measuring. Dianne's book is my dream workbook--it's full of ways to play with your fabrics and learn new approaches to creating a beautiful quilt, and encourages a playful, risk-taking spirit.

The book is divided into different "games," like Hopscotch, where you create a series of narrow, then wide, then narrow pieces that really do look like the hopscotch boards of our childhood; Tiddlywinks, with multicolored concentric ovals and circles arranged in patterns; Musical Chairs, with colors shifting from skewed block to skewed block in an orderly progression (until you throw in a Wild Card), and lots more. The best part is, Dianne shows you how to do each kind of improvisational piecing and then sets you free with lots of ideas and examples, so you can create something that is totally your own. The photos in the book are of wonderfully free-spirited quilts by several different quilters, and are in a lot of color schemes, though most are bright. Dianne encourages experimentation and ornamentation--there are plenty of beads, buttons, dangles and whirligigs here--and helps you get over your fear of cutting into big pieces of beautiful yardage by suggesting you "sneak up on them" and whack them into pieces, which then can go into a gloriously jumbled scrap basket that will trigger new ideas and combinations.
I just wish Amazon would post a cover photo and a "Take A Look Inside" section of the book. If you have any interest at all in improvisational quilting, you MUST get this book.

If you're more of a creative than a quilter, like I am, this is the book for you. In successive chapters, Hire takes the participant through eleven "games" with your fabric stash -- each which develops your skills and leaves you with an amazing set of non-traditional, contemporary quilts. From a Hopscotch block (a modified Courthouse Steps pattern) that is so easy it's beyond exciting, to a Toybox quilt which employs circles and spirals -- if you play these "games" in succession, you'll find your quilting creativity engage while your skills build and your stash shrinks. (And anything that shrinks your stash is just a good excuse to go shopping for more, right?)

If you're one of those perfect-corners and traditional blocks type of quilters, this book may drive you insane. But if you're a free spirit or a risk taker or someone coming to quilting by the way of other creative arts, this is a perfect book. It's easily the favorite in my collection that I can see myself going back to again and again.
