Fanciful Quilts is a wonderful paper piecing book. It has a touch of Holland with the windmills and tulips. The wedding quilt would be a beautiful present for that special bride and groom. For the special little boy who has to have a town for his little cars, this book shows you how to create such a town. Other quilts include a rose quilt, a wilderness quilt, a cat quilt, bear quilt, turtle quilt, and the cute cover quilt, the dog quilt.

The book is beautifully photographed and also includes extra ideas for each project. Fanciful Quilts to Paper Piece is a lovely addition to any quilter book shelf. I highly recommend this book. I hope this is just the first of many books Wendy will write!

I loved reading Fanciful quilts to paper piece. It's full of great quilts, good photo's showing how to do things and clear directions for the patterns themselves. The writer also showed different ways of using the blocks or sections of a pattern to make something else as well - not a common occurance and much appriciated!

The pattern i tried first was the windmill block and it went together like a dream!

This book is a must-have :-)

This was my first book about paper-piecing and now I only want more! Such lovely projects are in this book. This is a book for all generations of quilters! I'm going to make the weddingsampler for the anniversery of my parents and I want to make the turtle wall-hanging for my hobbyroom :). And the cats.... they are just like mine :) So another project on my to-do list :) I can't wait to see more books of this designer!

I purchased this book because of the dog quilt on the front cover. Between my daughter and I we have 5 dachshunds and I thought the quilt would be perfect for us. The entire book is awesome! I found several other quilts I want to make especially the play quilt for my twin grandsons. The instructions for paper piecing include some pointers I have never seen before and prove to be extremely helpful. I highly recommend this book, even if you are a beginner.

I rate Fast, Fun and Fabulous Quilts an 8 only because of the applique projects of which I'm not a big fan. The instructions are clear and takes the guesswork out of determing fabric yardage. Each project has tips to make the cutting and piecing more efficient. If you like stars, hearts, houses and teddy bears, get this book but it has lots more.

This book is one I bought for our guild library because of the incredible variety contained in it. There are projects that are quick and fun or take longer and are just as fun! It has excellent step by step photos when necessary, well written directions and very tastful projects from designers that any quilter who is getting their feet wet will recognize the name of. The quilts are made from a variety of techniques, so if you have a preference or want to learn something new, this book is for you. ENJOY, it is a keeper!

Also has alot of tips on how you can change the overall look with different fabrics etc.

The book is excellent for beginners; however, my communication with Amazon was not very satisfactory. I used the quick-order procedure which did not verify immediately my order or location. Consequently, my order was duplicated and sent to two different locations. I have learned not to use the short-cut ordering system because I could not get through to Amazon to cancel the duplication.

First-Time Quiltmaking: Learning To Quilt In Six Easy Lessons by Becky Johnston is an excellent "get-started" book. No prior experience is assumed by lessons that walk the beginner through preparing the fabric, sewing accurate seams, assembling the quilt top, making the quilt sandwich, and finishing the quilt. Full-color photographs and numerous step-by-step diagrams add a visual touch to this easy-to-use guide, spiral-bound to lay flat for easy reference while quilting. Highly recommended for anyone interested in learning the creative craft of quilting.

The ladies in my quilting group went crazy over this book and the new techniques it showed them. It has 24 original three-dimensional flower designs in fabric and silk ribbon. You learn to make a pompom dahlia, a lily, kalanchoe, hollyhock, China aster, an Australian waratah, passion flower, sweet pea, cockscomb, malaleuca, and others. She shows each flower in a finished project with detailed instructions to make the small quilt.
There are also patterns for six purses so you can make your own elegant evening bags or give them as gifts.
The steps are show in drawings with color so it is easy to see the folding and which side you are working with.
The techniques taught are appliqué, Japanese sashiko stitching, beading and embellishment, all-in-one backings and borders, and others.

This is what I was looking for!

This is exactly what I needed to complete a quilt I am working on. I wanted to include some flowers in a pineapple log cabin made in batik to give more dynamism to the end result. The projects in the book are easy to follow, magnificient and have that oriental touch but which can easily be included / adapted in more standard pieces of work. It is a real pleasure also to glance through the pages.

I was so excited to hear that Kumiko Sudo had a new flower book out! I loved Fabled Flowers and I like this one even better! The photos are beautiful and the patterns are so nicely laid out that I could follow them without any problem. For a visual learner like me, that--and lots of pictures--is exactly what I need. I made two of the flower designs the first weekend after buying the book. I used some of my favorite floral fabrics and they look wonderful. I love Rose Hortensia--little fairy faces peeking out of the flowers . . . so cute! I can't wait to get started on one of the purse designs . . . Marcie in Chicago

I bought this book over a year ago, after watching her on a Simply Quilts episode. I read it cover to cover and began a project almost immediately. Unfortunately it was put in the UFO basket but have only recently completed it, wishing I had not procrastinated.
The idea is quite different but the concept was amazing. The book needs to be read first to understand the step by step and it is well set out.
You can make any pictorial quilt into an amazing visual delight where viewed from a distance it is a work of art. Katie personally signed mine and I love her talent.

This book showcases the superb talent of the author in designing and crafting her unique style of quilt. The techniques will challenge the experienced quilter, but the many finished pieces will be a joy for all. These quilts are based on actual landscape photos from which the basic design is drawn. Geometric patterns are added "fracturing" the image into sections, each of which is pieced with it's own selection of fabrics. The end result is a remarkable play of light & color that gives the impression of looking at a scene through multiple lenses or broken glass. The special techniques used to produce these quilts are well described and illustrated. This is more than a how-to book. The many beautiful quilts done by the author and her students and shown in full color are a great display of the art of the quilt.

I was absolutely amazed and inspired when I received this book. The quilts are beautiful works of art. After reading the easy to follow instructions, I could not wait to start my own fractured landscape quilt. I was so excited about this beautiful technique that I took the book to my local fabric store and shared it with the sales staff. They were as amazed as I. They were so amazed that they are interested in purchasing this book for themselves and for the store.

When you are ready to start pushing your quilting artistry this book may be a bridge to step off. The technique of dividing your color wheel into color and hue is always an excellent exercise. The technique for an experienced quilter will add more to your depth of understanding of how you visualize a picture and how you can break it up into a more interesting study.
This is NOT a project in a weekend topic. You will take many steps and time to evaluate and teach your eye to grasp the symmetry. This is also a method that you can't go out and BUY just for this project, you will need a good selection of fabrics and may still find you need to shop for things that aren't found in your stash.
You come to this book when you are ready to explore MORE.

A brilliant and inspirational book!

This book has everything you need to know to make your first Hawaiian quilt - history, Hawaiian terminology, techniques from start to finish, and gorgeous patterns to choose from. Hawaiian quilts are a unique quilting tradition; appliques based on island nature, cut using a snowflake folding method and generally quilted with radiating "echo" lines. Books on this technique are few and far between, and this one is excellent. Aloha and happy quilting!

Study & you will quickly see that Feathers are THE MOST common quilting motif, next to the grid-line quilting. If you don't agree, then know that they are certainly up in the top 5! Feathers are so versatile and beautiful, formed in the image of bird plumage or if you will, in the shape of a teardrop - both of which are found throughout the entire history of quilting.
Feathers are used for filling space, in your blocks, setting triangles or sashings. You can quilt them in borders-long straight strips, make them undulate & twist, round or oval, place a half, quarter or heart shaped feather motif in your block, in a corner or just draw one on the label you sew onto the back of your quilt for a beautiful continuation of the effect.
No matter where or how you twist, turn, stretch or shrink your feather motifs, once you have perfected this teardrop shape, the possibilites are endless. Try it-you won't be disappointed!

While I hope to own this book someday(when the price comes down a bit)I want those who can just buy it without money concerns to know this. *From a quilter who studies quilting history non-stop, is the local guild librarian & webmaster.Owns a personal quilt related library of over 2,000 magazines & books. I like to pass on tips that will stay with you, not just be good for one or two times. Feathers are here to stay. They have endured the test of time, design and have held fast. You cannot go wrong with this-or any other well written instruction book on how to draw/design feather quilting motifs.

I like the book very much, however, I feel the layout and the photography could have been tighter and more artful. There's a bit of a rushed-to-put-together feel about it, which is disappointing. I'm dyslexic and left handed -- and after several decades of false starts learning to knit -- I finally got it. What I couldn't figure out from all the wonderful knitting books available now is how to get the beginnings and endings (and the errors in the middle) to work as well as the actual knits, purls, yarnovers, and slips....

I borrowed one book of finishing techniques, found another at a local bookstore, and found dozens of pages on the web that all attempted to explain how to accomplish these tasks which are evidently simple to most knitters.

This book, "Interweave's Compendiu7m of Finishing Techniuest..." and another Interweave book called "Knit Fix" are the only books I've found that manage to explain in such a way that I can translate their instructions into successful knitting. Both books are compact, spiral bound, and full of un-misunderstandable directions and clear, plentiful illustrations.

If I can understand the writing and illustrations in these books, imagine how useful they will be for the average kntter!

This book suffers greatly by not featuring the word "knitting" in its title -- in dozens of searches on Amazon, it never came up and was never associated with other books in this family -- oddly, it is associated with weaving books only. Don't let this mislead you.

I cannot wait to start making a quilt using the designs in this book! If you've seen a quilt with roses, irises, daisies...before and weren't impressed, try this book for designs that are fresh and clean. According to this book, a lot of the designs of the 1920's-1950's were based off of these. I have not seen these patterns used in this way ever before. In this book you will find patterns for many flowers including: iris (pictured on the cover), daisy, may tulips, poppy, white dogwood (fabulous!), french baskets, and a very beautiful grapes and vines pattern.

If you've never appliqued before, this book will be a challenge to you. The instructions are written for a quilter with some experience. The beginning of the book gives wonderful details of the life of Marie Webster who is the original creator of these designs.

I also enjoyed Marie Webster's Gardent of Quilts which, I think would be a bit easier for a beginner eager to try traditional designs.

This is a superb book for anyone interested in American quilts of the 20th century. I was intrigued to discover that Marie Webster's designs, introduced to the public as early as 1912, were the originals from which "traditional" quilt patterns of the 1920's and 1930's were derived. These include the sunbonnets (gentle here, not saccharine), the poppy applique, and the medallion floral appliques. Also, it was an eye-opener to see Webster's dogwood and sunflower designs, extremely close variants of which were popularized years later by a manufacturer of quilt batting. The photography is excellent, and the book is printed on beautiful heavy-stock paper. The essays (written by Webster's grand-daughter) are joyful and respectful and a pleasure to read. The book includes patterns for 12 of the quilts shown. I can hardly wait to get started with my needle.
