The blocks in this book are beautiful! I am making the first block now. The patterns are fullsized although they overlap which makes them a little harder to trace onto freezer paper. My block is looking great and I can hardly wait to make the other eight!

The Blackbird ladies have done it again. Another gorgeous book, a feast for the eyes! This quilt is on my to-do list for sure.

The lady who complained about getting the patterns increased at Kinkos - I will give her the benefit of the doubt and presume she didn't look through the whole book. The patterns are in the book, at FULL SIZE! You don't need to increase the patterns at all.

What she is talking about is the page which shows you the whole block put together - a layout template. Some quilters like to use a layout template, others don't. I find it easier not to use one. Most people are not going to need to add $45 to the cost of the book!

I hope it won't put anyone off buying this book. The pages she is talking about are not necessary to make this quilt. Once again, the patterns are in this book and are FULL SIZE!

The lady before me is also quite right in saying that you can enlarge sections and paste together. This will cost you maybe 20 cents, not 5 bucks!

A beautiful book which I highly recommend, especially since a trip to Kinkos will not be necessary :)

I really love the look of these blocks. The person who complained about the cost of enlarging the patterns has no clue that you can enlarge portions of the pattern and then tape the pieces together. It shouldn't cost $45 to enlarge the patterns! Why go to Kinkos and pay that kind of money? She must have limited resources or is just plain lazy. It's not difficult and it should not be an excuse not to buy this book. I plan to make a grouping of 3 of the blocks and hang them in my dinning room. They are all just lovely and the photos are beautiful! I haven't been so excited over a quilt book in ages. Highly recommended!!!

This book is the compilation of the expertise of the staff writers from Quilter's Newsletter Magazine and thirty additional well-known and professional quilters. As the Quilting Host at BellaOnline, I have read a number of books on quilting and this is a wonderful book. The information is nicely organized into sections that proceed in the order of how a quilt is constructed, beginning with tips on how to organize your workspace and ending with information on how to care for and display your quilts. There is also a very complete and well organized index at the end of the book so that you can look up specific topics.

The individual chapters are composed of "nuggets" of information with a tagline acknowledging the source of the information. The tips are varied in content and show a great deal of creativity. There are helpful tidbits here for everyone and there are numerous illustrations. The reading is light hearted and pleasant - I thoroughly enjoyed reading through it.

This book is loaded with snippets of information from quilting experts on different subjects. For example, in the section, "Needle Tips and Stitching Tricks", Sharyn Squier Craig says, "For hand quilting, I like to use Piecemakers #12 betweens because they don't bend easily and they retain their sharpness for a long time. The eyes on Piecemakers needles are large, which makes them easy to thread, and these #12 betweens are very short, which is helpful in making tiny stitches ..." Now that's helpful information!

Rosemary Makhan has updated antique Rose blocks and proportioned 20 patterns so that they flow together. She has produced the book to appeal to new and seasoned quilters alike by offering beginning applique lessons along with basic quilting and binding; additionally, reverse applique and some embroidery. The gallery of quilts are offered in beautiful color varieties; one of my favorites being a blue, teal and lavendar. If you are partial to Rose of Sharon blocks in applique, this is the book for you.

I am so pleased with Scraps of Time. This book was written by authors that truly understand the feelings that fabrics from our past evoke, and they have created patterns that will allow me to showcase these fabrics. I especially am pleased that the patterns include both basic piecing and foundation piecing. My favorite patterns are "Dancing Down Memory Lane" and "Sure You'll Wear it Again". I now have a pattern to use my Dad's ties in. I love the sentiments of this book.

Thank you Ann and Amy for directing me (saving me) on what I can do with prom dresses, prarie skirts from the 70's,those big sleeved, big bowed awful bridesmaid dresses I still have from eons ago, vests from the late 70's and the ties I saved from that "Annie Hall"/Punk Rock early 80's era I went through....Geez! These twins have given me "enthusiasm" not that dreaded,"why did I keep this stuff and what will I ever do with it?" feeling!
When purchasing a quilt book, I look for good directions and details I can understand......this quilt book gets 5 stars from me, because their directions are easy to understand, the pictures are great, and they've walked me down memorylane with all their own memories beautifully written.

The quilt I'll try first is on page 53...."Dancing Down Memory Lane"....I can't wait to get the scissors and rotary cutter out!

Karen McTavish is great at presenting her "Secrets of Elemental Quilting" in a detailed, but easy to understand book. You will enjoy reading about her ideas for machine quilting designs and may even want to try some of them out.
Another great thing about her book is the DVD that is included. You can watch the DVD and actually see highlights of the detailed processes she describes in her book.
Even if you never plan to make a show quilt, you will still be enthralled by the techniques she presents in her book and DVD.

This is one of my favorite quilting books. There are many great ideas for quilts made from scraps and FQs. Most of them can also be made from yardage if you so desire. The photos are great, directions are clear, and most quilts feature variations. One of my favorite parts of the book is the detail on how each project was quilted. In the back there is a great section on making pieced backings, quilting and tying.

My first response when thumbing through this book wasn't very positive. I saw only one quilt I thought I might make. However, over several days, I found myself thumbing through the book over and over again and becoming very excited about making a dent in my fabric stash with several of the patterns.

Her instructions are so very good, I've moved this book from the bookshelf to my sewing table and expect I will be using it until the pages become dog-eared and fall out of the book.

Having been a quilter for almost 40 years, my fabric stash is shamefully large. I'll probably never really bust it but this book is helping me put quite a dandy dent in it and I'm having a great time doing it.

Her patterns adapt equally well using new bold fabric colors and older vintage fabrics left over from quilts made decades ago.

Excellent book!

I enjoyed Lisa Boyer's first book, That Dorky Homemade Look, so I picked up this sequel for my mom and I to read. I love her sense of humor! The series of articles are very well written and incredibly funny as well as heartwarming. The last chapter in the book, about quilting in different parts of the country is worth the price of the book alone! Excellent read.

I made this quilt in the baby version, and the instructions were absolutely crystal clear with excellent illustrations, not too much on one page. It's like someone is by your side helping you all the way. Just follow the directions, and you'll have a quilt!! I quilted years ago and just recently went back to it, so I did need some refreshing and help. This book is great. I've used other books from the Quilt in a Day series, and they are excellent as well.

This is a great book! I had always wanted to do a quilt, but it just looked too involved and time consuming. I still consider myself a novice sewer and shy away from anything too complicated. But when I finally decided to do a quilt for my mother for Christmas this year, I spent countless hours seaching for the right pattern. I am one of those people who doesn't quite what they are looking for, but once they find it, BINGO! And that is what happened when I saw the Winning Hand. First of all the pattern was beautiful in its simplicity. But what was even better were the instructions. Talk about easy to follow!! I could not believe it! If you are a beginner and want to try your hand a quilt, I highly recommend this one. I love the card idea and the labeling of the different cards. It had made making this quilt some much fun and easy. My mother's is still in the working stage, but I can see that it will be beautiful. I have even started making plans to make myself one.

Love this pattern!!!!!!!

I am a first time quilter as well. I decided to make a queen size quilt for my oldest son's wedding in June. I had bought many quilter's books and looked online for help and instructions. I was a mess trying to decide what to do. Then my 92 yr old grandmother came to visit. She is an expert quilter and a top seamstress. She had brought me this book to show me. I glanced at the instructions and then asked her if I could borrow it. I can't tell you how great this book is. It tells you step by step what to do, even in which direction to iron the seams. I did my 30 squares in 2 days. I took the blocks over to show my grandmother and she said she has never seen anyone do better. She said honestly, it was as if I had been quilting top quilts all my life. I have to give the credit to the instructions. I used the magnetic foot just as they suggested, I picked my fabrics close to the colors you see on the front and I ironed after every step. The back of my squares look as good as the front. I am really not trying to brag, I just can't emphasize what a great pattern this is for a beginner or even experienced quilter. I am not finished with my quilt yet, but what I do have finished I am more than estatic about! You can't go wrong with this pattern.

After picking this book up and then putting it down at least a dozen times I finally jumped in with both feet. This was the second quilt I had done and I was a bit worried about my sewing abilities to maintain a proper seam allowance, but nonetheless I did it. My son is a John Wayne fan so it seemed only natural to use horse fabrics exclusively. May I say that it is so cute. If you want to do something flashy but easy, you really need this book. Every time you look at the finished product you'll feel yourself start swelling up with pride.
