I bought this book based on the reviews and I'm very happy with my purchase. The great photos show very specific hand positioning of different quilting techniques for both left and right handed quilters.
I'll be adding more of her books to my collection.

This is probably the best book I have found that gives instruction for hand quilting. The color pictures give very explicit instruction for both right and left handed people. I would recommend this to anyone interested in hand quilting, whether a beginner or a long time quilter. Alex Anderson is one of the best teachers and supporters of quilting. She does an excellant job with her program " Simply Quilts". I would recommend all her books.

As with her first book, Lone Star Quilts and Beyond, Jan takes a traditional pattern and turns it into something beyond what the ordinary quilter has imagined. Her instructions are easy to follow, and if you don't like one method of block assembly, she gives five others to choose from. Not only does she make the piece work simple, she offers an inspiring gallery of Hunter Star quilts, certain to appeal to both the traditionalist and the art quilter, the beginner and the professional. Like they say in the movies, I give this "two thumbs up" along with the traditional 5 star rating. You won't be disappointed.

I saw Jan Krentz on HGTV's "Simply Quilts" and so I bought the book. The Hunter Star pattern is beautiful and Jan has several methods for putting the quilt together: paper piecing method, strip piecing method, fusing method, and colorwash method. Beautifully illustrated too with clear instructions plus lots of pictures of finished quilts for inspiration.

This book is a gem. I originally stumbled across it in a bookstore when I was wracking my brain about what to get my mom, who has strong arts and crafts interests. I picked it up and started paging through it, and it was...beautiful.

Previously, I had thought of quilting as the tiniest bit dopey: traditional patterns, "country" styles, very little in the way of innovation -- but this book completely turned me around. This is quilting as high art. Some of the quilts took my breath away. I almost kept the book for myself. I still might buy myself a copy.

My mom had a more lukewarm reaction to it, along the lines that she probably wouldn't ever use any of the patterns...but I can imagine that the ideas in this book might influenced even her more traditional designs.

Since then, I've given this book to both quilters and non-quilters. Anyone with an eye for beauty (especially if they love Monet) will love this book. It's a treasure. You would never guess.

Traditional quilting somewhat bored me but I love collecting fabrics. Impressionist Quilts challenged me to use them! Ms. Perry takes you step by step through the process of watercolor quilting. This book will teach you more than just quilting but also color theory and design. I can't stop the ideas! I highly recommend this book and can't wait to get her next one!

Excellent examples of 'painting' with floral fabrics.

Walking through Joanne's Fabrics, Gai Perry's book caught my eye. Having never tackled a quilt, I jumped right in and designed my first one based on my mother-in-laws beautiful English Garden at the shore. Using her easy to follow instructions, the wall hanging was a success. Now I'm quilting my interpretation of the Buchart Garden's on Vancover Island in B.C. On the drawing table is a moon light scene over a lake to be done exclussively in blues and purples.

Buy this book, you'll be glad you did when you read about floral fabric selection, mixing and matching, gradations, and on and on. I've peeked at the photos in her 2nd book and can't wait to read it when Amazon ships it.

Initially, I was drawn to this book when i was in Montana, because of the lovely full-color illustrations of Star Quilts, as well as the interesting writing on Plains Indian history and culture. While i am not a quilter, nor do i intend to become one, I enjoyed the book immensely. It quickly became, and has remained, my favorite coffee table selection: aesthetic and inspirational !

This book contains some quite lovely pictures of native american star quilts, along with text explaining their significance to the author and to the Indians who make them, and easy-to-understand instructions for making these beautiful quilts. The novice (such as me) will feel quite confident in his/her ability to complete a beautiful heirloom to cherish.

Book stores and libraries need to keep copies of this book in both the section for crafts and the cultures sections.

The variations possible with star quilts are endless. The many full-color illustrations in this book show a wide array of possibilities using varying colors and designs. Some are the product of Montana's skilled Native American quilters and many are by Linda Parker herself. Parker provides patterns for a number of designs, plus many tips and techniques that will be of value.

The star quilt plays a unique role in the Plains Indian cultures. Giving gifts is a traditional way of recognizing accomplishments, milestones, or friendship. The star quilt is a noteworthy gift. The gift-giver may have made the quilt or have bought it from a quilter. A master quilter may make her, occasionally but rarely his, living making quilts. Particular quilts such as one involved in a particular ceremony or passed down through a family will have special meaning. It may have spiritual significance. Linda Parker explains some of the roles that a quilt may play in an Indian culture.

Linda Parker has done what few others could: produced a book that is both technically adept and spiritually rewarding. The focus and breadth aren't at odds with themselves. She gives an exhaustive portrayal of delight. This is both a work book and something you sleep with (put it under your pillow) before you start dreaming of your next adventure.

If you're looking for a simple quilt to give as a gift, this is the book for you. The best part is picking out all the fabrics to make all the "I Spy" squares. Once you cut them into the squares, you just need to arrange them. My daughter (age 8) and I have put together two quilts. She really loves doing the arranging while I do the sewing and ironing.

The book has full color photos so you can get ideas about how to finish the quilt. The instructions are well written.

My mother-in-law is making 6 I spy quilts from this book to give to her grandkids for Christmas next year. She plans on giving them a list of things to find in their quilt and when they find them all she's giving them $20. What a great gift.

The title attracted my attention because one of my stitching friends had recently lost her battle with breast cancer. But after leafing through the book I realized I had to add it to my growing collection of quilt books because it had so many wonderful designs, all made easy by speed cutting techniques and easy-to-read diagrams. The designs are a combination of traditional patches (with fresh colorways) and some original designs. All skill levels are represented, so the projects can challenge the experienced or provide quick yet exquisite results for the beginner.

The fact that a portion of the proceeds of this book go to breast cancer research should mitigate any guilt you might feel about adding yet ANOTHER book to your collection. But this book will not duplicate any other you own -- it stands on its own merits both as a quilting book and as a dispenser of helpful advice to those who are affected by breast cancer (either their own or that of a friend or loved one).

I highly recommend this Mimi Dietrich book for the following reasons: 1.The 11 step-by-step projects range in size and difficulty, but most are small and personal and the kind of items one can make and give as gifts. These are not involved projects that take years to complete! 2.The pages of tips that accompany the quilts are full of sound advice for friends and caregivers as well as for cancer patients themselves. 3.Two percent of the net sales benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation (one of the largest private funders of research in the U.S. dedicated soley to breast cancer). The book is a gift to quilters and patients alike! We buy the book; they get more funds for research!

Before I developed breast cancer, I saw an episode of Simply Quilts on HGTV featuring the author of this book and was SO inspired by it. While recovering from surgery and radiation therapy in 2001, I made several Pink Ribbon blocks with a pattern from Pink Ribbon Quilts and gave to breast cancer survivors. I'm sure in the near future, I'll be tackling one of the beautiful quilts patterns in the book. I would highly recommend this book to any quilter and/or breast cancer survivor.

Just opening this book draws you into our pioneering past. You will find a mixture of photos of pioneer children and families along with delightful quilts in the fabrics and styles of nineteenth century America on the move.

The excerpt for the diaries by pioneer children will both charm you and help you realize the hardships these children went through. The information in each chapter will get you in touch with what life was like for these children.

But this isn't just a history book. There are patterns for the quilts and other projects that are related to the aspects of pioneer life described. All of Kathleen Tracy's patterns include clear and complete instructions so that even a beginner can make these lovely little quilts.

Some of the patterns would be perfect for a child making his or her first quilt. Others could be a joint mother and child project. But of course grown ups will have a wonderful time making this quilts either for the children in their life, for their doll collection or just for fun.

This is a MUST HAVE for any new quilter. I also enjoyed the simple patterns - I was able to make a nice quilt on my first attempt!

I made my first quilts using this book --about five of them so far. The instructions are clear, the quilts are diverse enough to satisfy every taste--rail fence, Amish, Provencal, bargello, courthouse steps, checks, madras--and they are presented with very attractive hand-colored illustrations in a choice of color ways. I have many quilt books, but this is my all-time favorite. If I had only one quilt book, this would be it!

I bought this book for my 1st grader who is starting to quilt. It has a nice, very basic history of the westward movement & how quilts tied in with it & were used at the time. The craft projects in the book are very nice, & would make nice small gifts for children to give whether or not they have any acess to sewing equipment. They may also inspire interest in starting to quilt in some, and the squares shown are a nice selection of begining squares to choose from for a child to make their own first sampler.

Overall excellent & a great book for hopefully starting younger kids on a a folk art form we don't want to lose. My daughter is very excited that something she does was done by the pioneers & that she can do it herself, just like them.

(A nice aside is that the book also points out that kids actually had to do chores & lots of them back then, rather than park it in front of the TV all the time-doesn't make what I ask seem so bad by comparison :)).

I was asked to present a quilting demonstration for 144 4th graders during their "Pioneer Day" study. As references I secured several books, magazines, articles, etc. The Quilt Block History of Pioneer Days was by far the best. The projects outlined in the book for children to do corresponding with the story were easy to do and could really help today's child relate to life in pioneer times.

I would recommend this book for anyone interested in quilting history, but especially for adults working with children.
