Time to Quilt not only shows you how to plan a quilt retreat with your quilting friends, but offers resourceful solutions to make more time to quilt at home without feeling guilty. I followed the books advise and scheduled time for my quilting by putting it on the calendar, planning ahead to have the kids and husband busy with their own activities out of the house. Then I indulged on my pleasurable project in good conscience.

Time to Quilt has a wide variety of quilt designs and projects from large to small, with suggestions on what to do with leftover blocks too! My favorite is the playful ice skate table runner as the quilting makes a "figure 8". Can't wait to make the footwarmer soon.

Everything about the book is beautiful: the photography, graphics, friendly writing style. The book has a positive, open feeling to it. Really clear and easy to follow instructions with good illustrations. Terrific tips on basic skills as well as how to put a group quilt together when blocks are not quite the same size.

The book has recipes peppered throughtout. My favorites are the mix-in cookies and Scrapsoup. For the Pollo con Salsa recipe, you don't even need to defrost the chicken. It was so easy, it gave me more time to quilt!

Quick, Easy Quilt That Looks Lovely

I recommend this book to anyone who would like to be able to make a lovely quilt in a relatively short amount of time. Eleanor Burns' efficient, time-saving techniques are perfect for those of us who love quilts but aren't interested in long, drawn-out, complicated projects. When I bought this book, my sewing background consisted of three group sewing classes at the local fabric store. My only quilting experience was piecing together a pinwheel-design potholder. However, by using this book, I was able to sew my first quilt, a "Trip Around the World" baby quilt that turned out beautifully. I then used this book to piece together a queen-size "Trip Around the World" quilt top in just one Saturday (about 12 hours). Eleanor Burns' techniques are effective and easy to follow, and the results look terrific!

I hadn't touched a sewing machine in 25 years...since Junior High school...I signed up for a quilting class at our local quilt shop and made this quilt, a queen size Trip Around the World following Eleanor Burns Quilt in A Day (more like a few weeks) pattern. I had a wonderful time and completed a beautiful quilt. I won't say that it was super easy, but it wasn't difficult. And I was an absolute beginner, I knew NOTHING about quilting. I found the directions to be very easy to follow. I have since purchased a few more of Quilt in A Day books and plan to make more quilts from their patterns.

I made my first quilt using this book - about 10 years ago. I had never sewed anything outside of high school home ec. and it turned out beautifully. I went on to make 3 more in this pattern in various sizes. Super easy. Just take the book to the fabric store - it tells you exactly how much fabric to buy for each size. I am now going to try another pattern in the Quilt in a day series. It's really more of a "Quilt in a weekend" but that is fast enough for me!

Carol Doak's outstanding 40 Bright & Bold Paperpieced Blocks provides twelve inch designs in block style to be used as quilt foundations and inspirations. Eight projects cover wall to bed quilts, small and large. Blocks are gorgeous and provide fine examples of color-coordinated piecing.

The patterns and information in this book are easy to follow. Since these blocks are made up of only 4 "quadrants", the teens in my 4-H sewing club were successful and enthusiastic about trying this "new" quilting method. It makes it a great book for those of us new to paper piecing!

Just flipping through this colorful book will make you yearn to start gathering fabric and start sewing. Each block is shown individually in vibrant color and arranged in "mini quilt" that shows how the block looks arranged in a grouping of 4 joined blocks. The facing page gives you the foundation layout for the block. Of course, copying the layout page also gives you a place to use crayons to play with color before committing to a fabric selection. Each block includes a cutting list with sizes and dimensions clearly outlined. The book starts with advice about selecting colors and gives illustrated step by step instructions on how to paper-piece. The book ends with photos of 8 completed quilts with fabric and cutting charts. Whether you need patterns or inspiration this book will motivate you!!

This book reads like a devotional for quilters and other people who find that working with their hands is very spiritual. Each story adds something more to the wonderful patchwork world of quilting -- humor, sadness, joy, frustration, peace, creativity, surprise, fun, and so on. As one of the contributors to this book, I have anticipated the release of this book for some time now. As a quilter, I love to hear about other quilters and their experiences and what flames their passion for this art. To me, it is amazing how the same craft can touch such a variety of people in so many ways. I loved reading this book. It makes me appreciate even more how quilting goes beyond the physical quilt and into personal lives.

Was a very informative book on quilts, but was puzzeled by the caption on page 56 of the quilt titled Hank Williams. I don't believe the idea of the artist intended for it to be catagorized in pop art. Maybe a quote from the artist would be appropriate or a way to contact the artist about her view. Did the artists in the book have to sign a release for use of their quilts?

From the moment I set eyes on this book I knew I had to have it. The quilts are totally incredible. The skill of these quiltmakers & the detail they obtain is astonishing. They are true artists. It is a great value.

The abstract quilts combine color, pattern & shape so beautifully it takes your breath away. Surface techniques such as dyeing, painting, applique & embroidery make these quilts remarkable works of art.

Some of my favorite quilts include a nude pregnant woman & two quilts depicting Noah & his ark. I enjoyed a few scenes with vases & another made as a memorial to the artist's parents. I also fell in love with the many landscape quilts.

The text is fascinating, discussing the history behind quiltmaking & the techniques used to make these beautiful quilts. The captions are great, explaining the methods used to make the quilt as well as the artist inspiration.

Recommended for needlecraft students, quilters & collectors.

Robert Shaw draws upon his impressive expertise to celebrate the traditional bed quilt as a needlecraft art form that is a creative, emotional, example of "form following function". His insightful text traces the transformation of the quilt from bed cover to display piece, the quilter from homemaker to academically trained artist, the workshop from kitchen to studio, and the materials from simple to complex. The Art Quilt is superb survey of an art form grounded in tradition and, at the same time, committed to originality and innovation. The works of such superb contemporary quilters as Michael James, Yvonne Porcella, Julia Pfaff, Nancy Crow, and more than two hundred others, serve to illustrate the quilt as art -- and the art of the quilt. The Art Quilt is enhanced with 300 full-color reproductions and numerous insightful sidebars of important technical processes and leaders int he art quilt field. The Art Quilt is highly recommended reading for needlecraft students, quilters, collectors, and popular culture enthusiasts.

You CAN have a green thumb

Review Date: 2008-04-28
This is definitely the book for me. I DON'T have a green thumb but I do appliqué. I wish I had found this book last fall rather than now going into summer but the book will still be there come fall. Appliqué is something I love to do in front of the fireplace on a cool/cold night.

The first 25 pages are all about appliqué hot-to's and quilting basics along with choosing colors and fabrics. It is a chapter that very thoroughly covers all these points.

Then there are 10 different flowers to "grow" under your needle. Pillows and wall hangings make up the 10 patterns. While no quilts are shown, there is no reason you couldn't turn the patterns into quilts.

Each project begins with a paragraph about the flower and the finished size of the project. A materials and cutting list follow this. Simple construction directions are given with finishing suggestions. All templates are included. The more complex patterns come with color keys as well.

Grab some scrap fabric (this book will give you a way to use up those scraps you just can't part with), some template plastic, your ruler and cutting mat and this book. When you are done, you will have a "green thumb" to show for it!

A Great Book!

Every child looks forward to Christmas but my son especially looks forward to each December when he can use our Christmas Tree Advent Calendar to help him remember how many more days there are until Christmas. Last December, so that all of the children in his first grade class could learn (and have fun) from using it, we let him take it to school. We hung the tree in his classroom and each day during the month of December the teacher let a different child pick an ornament to hang on it. She told me that the children absolutely loved it.
