I am a quilter and always looking for inspiration by reading quilt history books. I am also a transplanted Hoosier and this book was excellent. It's format and pictures were well done. I finished it in one day which was a bit unusual for this type of book. I wish all quilt history books were this easy of a read.

Big and Little Fishes

I was attracted to the Big and Little Fishes quilt by Darlene Zimmerman when I recently attended a quilt show. I hunted her down and found that there was a pattern to match the gorgeous quilt in "Quilts to Come Home To." This book has been out for awhile, but it is awesome. None of the projects are too complicated, even for the beginner, but look like they could be pieced by a professional. The directions are excellent. If you have the special rulers they call for, it makes cutting easier, but each quilt can be done using your regular rulers and rotary cutter. Worth the effort.

QUILTS TO TREASURE is a book that is just what is says! It has quilts to make that I will treasure for many years to come. The patterns are the ones I think of when someone says "Oh, you make quilts"! They are patterns of baskets, stars and memory quilts and shown in earth tones which are my favorite colors.

Appliqué, strips, squares and triangles are used to create these eight wonderful treasures. The first thing each pattern gives is the quilt and block size. A materials list follows with the cutting instructions after that. Each quilt is shown in full color on a full page. Then the directions for putting the quilts together are worded for easy understanding. There are plenty of graphics to show how each step should look. If there are appliqué pieces for that particular quilt, they are available with the rest of the instructions and if they need to be enlarged, it tells you by how much.

Ms. Neff has instructions on how to ink letters which is used in two of the quilts - one for recipes and one for naming the herbs. No quilting book would be complete without some general directions and they are written clearly. These quilts are ones that will be good to use in my quilting classes to show students just how easily quilts can be made and what retro fabrics will do for a quilt.

although this is not a huge book, it contains a wonderful collection of late 18th through 19th century bdecoverings, from woven to embroidered to quilted. the examples are generally beautiful as well as historically interesting.

the introduction is brief but informative, defining the various terms used for bedcovers over time and including fascinating evidence of the value owners put on their textiles. there are also short biographies for the makers of some of the bedcovers, and even portraits in whatever medium was contemporary. also included are a few photos of textile tools, some handwritten weavers' draughts (and cloth woven from them), and a handwritten notebook for embroidery stitches.

the only drawback for me is the book's brevity--i wanted more, more history and biography, and details of the bedcovers, more of the collection.

quilters, weavers, those interested in textile and social history will find this book informative, enjoyable and inspiring.

FANTASTIC BOOK!! HAS EVERYTHING!! IN ONE BOOK!!!
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.

This book has absolutely everything just as the title states.
The best part is the size of the book, and that it lies flat, for the full size Quilting Designs, which are Spectacular, there all Full-Size(no connect here!), as are all the Applique Templates(no enlarge 400%). I Love the Coxcomb Quilt, it is absolutely a pleasure to make, and then have all the Quilt Designs as well, so you don't have to go to 3 different books to finish one Quilt. Excellent Book, soooo Glad I purchased it, It was a wonderful Surprise, especially since there was no photo, better than most books, that had a cover picture!!! Oh! and Great Price!!!
