I began quilling to learn a new craft for scrapbooking. I wasn't planing to do anymore than that. This book inspired me into getting into this craft more indepth. There's a beautiful fan in here that I started working on to hang up in my home. There's a lot of new techniques and ideas in this book that other quilling books don't get into. If your a quiller and don't have this book, I think your missing out on some intervative ideas. There's also good ideas for embelishments for scrapbooking too. Beware- This is not an easy book. Some of the techniques are more complicated than in the "beginers" books. But if your willing to practice I don't think you would regret it.

Extremely inspirational!

It's nice to know there really is no limit to what one can create with a little knowledge and a lot of imagination. Highly recommended.

This book definitely illustrates quilling skills that will guide you beyond the basics. Photos in the book demonstrate various tools which could enable you to create more precise shapes. The projects in this book are broken down into each essential paper shape and element with numbered steps. Specific tips and techniques are provided for each of the basic shapes. Ultimately you are able to manipulate the paper with far greater control. Once assembled you will discover beautiful art pieces with a delicate filigree appearance. The projects in this book are more sophisticated and offer you designs that yield heirloom-quality results.

Writer Carolyn Heilbrun recommended Nikki Giovanni to me and others at the Chicago Humanities Festival in 2002. I read Giovanni's poetry yesterday and was carried away. My favorite poem in Quilting the Black-Eyed Pea is the one about Richard Williams, tennis father extraordinaire. Read this poem to your father; you and he will smile together.

Poems and Essays¿Nikki Style

Review Date: 2003-04-20
Holding a book of poetry or essays by Nikki Giovanni is like holding a gift of joy in one's hand. In this slim volume called Quilting the Black-Eyed Pea, we get both genres. Some pieces have both; they start off as a poem and meander into essay form as in the self-titled offering, "Quilting the Black-Eyed Pea". What does H. Rap Brown have to do with NASA and Martians? Well, in this poem/essay, she ties it all together and somehow it all makes sense.

In "Twenty Reasons to Love Richards Williams, Giovanni pays tribute to Venus and Serena Williams' father; "He makes white folks crazy (PS and the black bourgeoisie, too)". "Don't Think" is but six powerful lines and "Blackberry Cobbler", now one of my favorite poems, is reminiscent of childhood and grandmothers. Tributes are paid to James Baldwin, Rosa Parks, and there is another Aretha poem. In these tributes, a ground work of black history is laid before she bestows the honoree with ultimate adulation.

As in Love Poems, her previous collection, Giovanni gives you words of wisdom, love, and conscientious discourse. This is a book that you will find yourself picking up again and again and wanting to share with others. This is poetry- Nikki style.

In order to read this book properly, you'll have to heat a cup of tea and curl up under a warm blanket in front of a crackling fireplace. Make sure your feet are covered with thick, wool socks. You'll also have to check your preconceived notions about the world at the door and open your mind to seeing the same old things in a new way. Nikki Giovanni promotes thought.

In "Quilting the Black-Eyed Pea," Giovanni tosses gold dust into the air and allows it to cover the world with great insights and wit. Her "Poems and Not Quite Poems" elicit smiles, tears and introspection. One gets the feeling of sitting at a wise grandmother's kitchen table as she cleans collard greens in a sink full of pale green water. Giovanni's words run clear.

She praises Richard Williams (father of Venus and Serena Williams) for committing himself to his daughters' dreams. She honors Aretha Franklin. She shakes a disgusted head at President Bush and former Vice President Al Gore. She even has a few words for Susan Smith, the woman who drowned her children in her abandoned car.

Giovanni speaks of her childhood and of the people who influenced her life. In this book, she sings an old, comfortable melody.

"Quilting the Black-Eyed Pea" is an interesting read. It leaps about from topic to topic like a wild rabbit exploring the countryside. Although some won't agree with all of her views, Giovanni is to be respected as a voice in our history - speaking out where others have gone mute.

I loved this book of poems and not quite poems. I have so many favorites but the one I liked most was "Twenty Reasons to Love Richard Williams". When I read the title I was thinking who is Richard Williams...maybe some one she once dated. As I started reading it I realized who she was talking about. This poem is so funny yet so VERY true. I actually read it twice. There were several others that I enjoyed like "Aunt Daughter and that Glorious Song" and "Bring On The Bombs: A Historical Interview". As I read these I was sort of lost at first and then I realized that they were about James Weldon Johnson and Daisy Bates, I love the way that she tells the stories of those two events in history. I do wonder if "Aunt Daughter and That Glorious Song" is a true story. I also enjoyed "What We Miss", which was some what therapeutic for me becuase I lost my mother last year and many of the things that I miss about my mother were written in this poem. And "He Blew It" just speaks for itself.
I love Ms. Giovanni's writing and this book is one of my favorites. She is so truthful about everything that she has written here. It is like she put on paper what everyone has been thinking.

The book is displayed proudly in my home. I read the book and enjoyed the narratives on each chapter and the comments of each artist. I was very pleased to see the different "twists" and "spins" of each artists work. Looking at the pictures, you can almost touch the colors, textures and the spirit of the work. I've been to several art shows in which some of the featured artists work were on display. I had the opportunity to attend a quilt show in Huntsville AL to hear Yvonne Wells talk about her work and I was extremely pleased that the works of quilt artists are being highlighted in one woman/man shows. The book was long overdue!!!!! Thank you to the artist C. Mazloomi!!!

I received this wonderful book from my son,(via an Amazon gift certificate) for Mother's Day. It is very meaningful because I've had the pleasure of meeting and viewing the works of several of the featured artists including the author. The women are as warm and vibrant as their creations and willing to share their God-given talent with emerging quilters like myself. The colors in this book leap off the pages and wrap themselves around you , just as the original quilts were meant to do. I agree with another reviewer; even if I didn't know which end of the needle to thread this will be a most cherished gift. I am extremely & excitedly inspired.

Unequivocally, one of the best quilt books out there!!!

My daughter bought this book for me and I will be forever in her debt for doing so. I am a fairly new quilter, and have been looking a long time for quilts that would reflect the african diaspora. This one does it in spades. The colors and artistic expression of the quilts is unparalled. Kudos to those who submitted quilts. It has been an inspiration to me.

Having the pleasure of seeing the traveling exhibit of "Spirits of the Cloth" before it became a book was the first thrill! Having met one of the quilters through an African American Quilting group on Prodigy, it is now a pleasure and privilege to see not only the work of Kyra Hicks in full color, but also those of the many talented artists in this art form. It is a book that makes it possible to take quilting beond its borders and add new dimensions to the concept of quilting! Way to go, artists in this book!

I am a lover of star blocks and this book is great for making stars without having to deal with points. The instructions are easy to follow and the author gives you all the information you need to complete the blocks easily and timely. I would say the only drawback to the information in this book is that due to the technics used you will end up using more fabric than if you did the blocks in the tradional way. But again the technics used are much easier than tradional ways.

This book will forever put to rest the notion that eight pointed stars are difficult! Anyone will be able to make those pesky stars with complete confidence and perfection. Nancy has done ALL the work by giving us 30 stars in many different sizes. She also gives us some beautiful quilt projects to make. She also shows us how to use the "leftovers" to make absolutely beautiful and imaginative quilts. Nothing is wasted. There are some techniques out there that are so wasteful, that I hesitate to use them. With fabric prices steadily climbing, I am very happy to use this wonderful book. Thanks, Nancy. I love the book. It's one of my favorites.

Squares and Rectangles Galore!

Review Date: 2006-09-23
As I was reading "Stars by Magic", I wondered just how many more star ideas could be presented in this book than was given in "Block Magic". As I continued through the book, I found out that there are literally dozens of ways to put these squares and rectangles together to make wonderful new patterns.

But I am ahead of myself. In the very beginning of the book, Nancy provides two "No-Fail" tips sections; one on sewing on the diagonal and one on pressing. Learn what she says and it will give your blocks a more professional look. Then, there is the "how-to" on reading the charts which tells you how to figure out the sizes of the squares and rectangles you need to make the blocks.

30 block ideas later - no make that 90 blocks later as each block shows three different color-ways - I was eager to get out my fabric and try a few. The blocks range in size from 4" to 18". Putting a few 18" blocks together and you have a quilt in a hurry. By now, you realize there are cut-offs from making the blocks. WAIT! Don't throw them out (and what quilter would anyway!?), put them together and you get "bonus blocks and borders". The final pages of this book provide ten quilt maps. Oh my, which one do I start with first? If I have such a difficult choice to make, think what my students will have!

Since my students now realize that making star patterns are not that difficult, they are eager to try other ideas such as taking one-fourth of a block to make borders and by just turning that same quarter block, they get whole new look. But don't just use them for borders, use the quarters together to make a whole quilt! With this book, I will be teaching "Stars by Magic" for several more classes!

Evelyn Sloppy's "Strips & Strings,Sixteen Sparkling Quilts" is a very clearly written guide to making quilts mostly from strips of scraps. After using some other books full of typo's and bad instructions, this book is a breath of fresh air.

Beautifully illustrated, this is one of the best tutorials on freezer-paper applique I've found. This lovely book includes patterns simple enough for those new to applique, as well as gorgeously intricate designs-irrisistable to even the most experienced quilter.

Based on timeless floral motifs admired by the artist in Turkey, these patterns, and accompanying colorful text, bring to mind the bustle of crowded street bazaars, the mystery of smoky Turkish coffeehouses, and the lush comforts of the harem.

Take a virtual magic-carpet ride, and treat yourself to some Turkish Delight!

I found this book to have more information than I expected. It reminds me of looking in an encyclopedia. There are plenty of great pictures, line drawings and explanations. I found this book to either give me much of the information I needed on a subject, or at times, at least enough to get me started. I would say it covers a whole lot of information in a nice hardcover book that is thin enough to take from workroom to couch for a good read.

I just couldn't imagine not having it by my side when I had questions (and as a beginning quilter, I have a LOT of questions!!). This is a great book with a lot of information in it. There is only one other book that I think is just as good and that is _The Quilters' Ultimate Visual Guide._ Both books have many color pictures and explain things very clearly. If I could only have two books on basic quilting information, I would pick these two. Enjoy!

The text gave me invaluable information to help identify a puzzling old quilt which was found stuffed in a chimney undisturbed for 90 years. Barbara Brackman is the author to read when one seeks information about quilts and their history. I enjoyed the chapter identifications allowing me to quickly access the fabric type I was seeking.

what a wonderful resource book for anyone who is interested in fabric/fiber arts.
i'm a quilter who likes to create quilts with a flair from yesterday. this book not only helps me to be closed in my interpretation of that time, it does guide me through the decision which colors have been more used than others. the contents/pictures are very clear and the instructions to recreate some of the quilts are outstanding. i would give this book 6 stars!
