Novia Scotia quilt designs often are hung (as a diamond, or herringbone shape) versus the early American tradition of sqares. So, the patterns listed, are often on this angle.

Patterns include: Nine-patch quilts, square and triangle variations, Windmill "hung" with herringbone, basket quilt, t-square quilt, jacob's ladder quilt, snowball quilt, whirligig quilt, giant tulip quilt (with appliqued stems), and rose of sharon wreath.

The full-size pattern pieces are included, with 1/4" seam allowance included (my preference).

I received the book very quickly and it was in wonderful condition. The pattern had been removed (which was stated up front) but was all there and in good shape.

it took me a while to warm to piece o cake--their colors are definitely not mine. after seeing what another quilter had done with their designs, however, i had to check them out. i'm now an enthusiastic fan.

this particular book has one of the most beautiful applique designs i have seen--the poppies quilt. it is not only gorgeous, it is innovative in the best sense. their version of a four block applique quilt is modern and exciting.

the other eight patterns range from slightly updated traditional to definitely contemporary. the colors are not as bright as in some of their previous work.

this is not a book for beginners. some experience with piecing, applique and quilting is necessary for all the designs. even the easiest need a decent amount of knowledge and skill to be completely successful. there are at least two designs that would challenge all but the expert. one design is paper pieced.

as in the other piece o cake books, there is a lot of useful information and many handy tips. the directions are wonderfully detailed and include line drawings of the quilting--one part of the process usually dismissed as 'quilt as desired.' the line drawings of other aspects are also extremely good.

the only annoying part of this book is the nearly endless advertising of the authors' 2001 fabric line. in most of the quilting books i have, if there is any need to mention or thank fabric companies, it occurs once in the first few pages of the book. here, it's every pattern. since this book is now five years old, there's no hope of finding the fabrics called for.

that aside, this book offers quilters a broad range of choice and a lot of inspiration.

This is a lovely book with perfectionist descriptions of every step and preventative measures to insure the most amazing results. The method is exceptionally simple strip piecing but the book is a font of additional information that will increase your skills. The author breaks down each step to the minutia and cuts off any common made mistakes.

There are many activities that can be therapeutic, and Dream Time continues to show people how. "Open Your Heart with Quilting: Mastering Life Through the Love of the Patches" discusses how quilting can be used as meditation and help readers settle themselves after stressful activities as simple as a day at the office through this craft. With advice on connecting with one's community, family, and immortalizing other memories through knitting a quilt. "Open Your Heart with Quilting" is a must for anyone who wants to unlock the mental benefits of quilting.

I'm not an expert seamstress, but I like the simplicity of this quilted jacket & vest. Most of the jacket or vest is strip piecing, but I'm a little fuzzy on the seam binding. Measurements & pattern variations are included and in a variety of sizes. The booklet includes color photos of several different variations that the author has created.

Doris Price Fisher sure can tell a story. I laughed, I cried and I learned a lot. The depression era was a hair before my time so it was interesting to see how simple folks got along. Especially curious to me was how they stored their big quilt racks in small places. I would recommend this book to anyone and am ordering one for a friend right now. I appreciate that she shared her life with us- The good, the bad and the bald faced honesty that gives us permission to own our own history- the good - the bad- well you know...
I wish she would write more stories for us. Charming and passionate as this book reads.

I saw this author on Simply Quilts and wanted to try some of the patterns that were shown on the show. It is a great book for techniques. There are also patterns at the back of the book for you to copy.
