This manual has very good illustrations, some photos and clear instructions covering the many aspects of quilting and associated techniques. It has been an excellent aid for me in the past, also more recently for a friend, new to quilting and is a must-have reference with a good index. I highly recommend the book.

I love this book. It really does cover the step by step, beginning to end. You can basically get everything you need from this book. There are a few areas (i.e., more pics or more detailed terminology) that you might need along the way. I did want a little more info about machine quilting. So, I just purchased one more book "The Quilters VIsual Guide..." to use as a second reference. I paid $7 for a used book...including shipping. It was "brand new" when I got it. So, if you don't want to pony up the money for it....get it used.

This book will provide the info you need to actually get started.

This book has some really wonderful ideas and instructions to make quilts from jelly rolls (2 1/2" strips). It gives cutting instructions also incase you want to use just yardage. The pictures of the quilts are quite good.

Although I haven't tried making any of these quilts, I found it inspiring. There are alternate colors and set up designs for each of the main quilt patterns --- that changes the entire "feel" of each quilt.

Let your imagination roll.

As soon as I opened the pages to this book I knew it was a good one. The quilts shown are not only colorful but can be made up quickly. And the instructions given, if you don't have a Jelly Roll, are fantastic. All quilters are always looking for ways to use their stash in creative ways and this book provides many opportunities to to just that.

Normally I would have knit a baby blanket vs. sewing one, but decided that I wanted to make a baby quilt.
I looked at many books and still found it to be somewhat confusing, all the terminology,, and intimidating at best.

I have knit log cabin squares ,so I did not think it would be hard to sew them ( I have sewn in the past so that part is not new to me)
It was fun to knit, and find it very enjoyable to sew the log cabin quilts!
I never was a fan of quilting before ,,,,and I still think that this will be the only pattern I will use and re use for quilts.
Most other patterns are SO time consuming and confusing to me.

I have known about the whole Quilt in A Day series since I had visited quilt shops and shows with friends who do quilts for church projects and had spent sometime looking at all the fun projects that are out there. Plus I got hooked on the Amy Butler line of fabric for skirts and halter tops (she designs them also) and she makes some to die for fabrics for awesome contemporary quilts. Check out her website to see some of her things.

The new mom wanted a quilt and even asked for one ( if possible) that a little girl could " grow with" ,meaning all her other baby quilts/blankets from before were small,,,,, and quickly outgrown from her first little boy.

OK, I thought,,,,,this is for a little girl now, lets see what can be done.
I went to the fabric shop with a knowledgeable friend and picked out the mom's chosen colors of lilac's and greens and the backing.

After getting this book as well as ordering the DVD ( that has even more info in it for 10$ from the company) I am pleased to report that I am NOT intimidated anymore and having a lot of fun sewing it up!
I did decide to do a wall hanging size ( vs baby size) as the baby can use this for play space when on the floor and also transfer it to her bed when she gets a little bigger.
I will not be doing the actual quilting the first time around , I am taking it in to get quilted, but the next one I am planning , I will do on my machine ~ that one will be a lap robe for my mother who also wants a light weight quilt rather than a knit throw.

I guess I will keep knitting socks , and sweaters but as of now,,,,I am HOOKED on quilting for beds and throws!

I want to thank the author for making this SO clear and SO easily understood that a person like me who has NO idea how to quilt feels confident in their very first quilt!
I think I am going to very much enjoy this new hobby!

I think the whole Eleanor Burn's line of books and DVD's are very good but the truth is,,,,you can make some pretty incredible Log Cabin quilts in many different patterns just out of this one book.
I LOVE It!

I bought this book several years ago, when I first started quilting. I made 5 quilts (for gifts) at one time with this pattern. I am a visual learner so the illustations and easy to follow directions were perfect for me. I especially appreciated the easy to follow instructions on cutting out, laying out and piecing the strips. They all came out beautifully. One tip; I do not have a quilting sewing machine and had trouble finishing the denim quilts by machine. So I tied these off. I prefer Eleanor Burns' books over others because of their simplicity.

I'm a new quilter and had been intimidated by the Log Cabin pattern. I took a class that taught this method at my local sewing machine center, and was able to complete a wall hanging (which at 68" x 68" is more like a throw) top in an 11 hour class including cutting and chattering time. I'm an Eleanor Burns fan for life now.

I am not an experienced quilter, but I have made several quilts. When I came across this book and thumbed through the pages, I was fascinated by her method. When I last made a king-sized quilt, it took me 3-4 years, mostly because I was discouraged by how long it was taking me to assemble it. I started with this pattern recently to make a king-sized quilt as a gift, and I am astounded with how fast I am progressing. With this method, you can work on it in short bursts if you want, but if you have an entire day, you can get a lot done! I highly recommend it! I look forward to using this method to make quick baby quilts in the future!

This book helped me with my quilt stitch, but there is just no way a book can really teach a person to quilt. You need to be able to see it in action. But from this and another book I bought I now know I was pulling the quilt too tight in the frame. Beyond the actual quilt stitch there were many great tips. I am glad I bought this book, but I wish my grandmother was here to teach me the actual stitch.

I fell in love with this book at first sight but was afraid that the projects in it were unattainable - they were cute in the book but I could never produce anything like. But - I was proved wrong!! I would not call them completely simple to make - you have to have patience to embroider and practice making the bodies but where there is a will there is a way. I have created a number of dolls and am giving them to my daughters for Christmas. True - the dolls are not from plastic casts and will suffer damamge but then I can enjoyably make more. All said and done the dolls are not very expensive to make. Some might be snafooed by having to paint the faces but there are ways around this too. There are other wool felt projects in it too like little purses and pins. Totally adorable!! and no painting required. To conclude - if you are craftsy and good with your hands AND like fairies you probably will really enjoy this book.

If you want to look at truly innovative and beautiful art, this is the book. I love to look at art books, as well as make stuff, so I found this book truly satisfying. Felt Wee Folk is one of the most inspirational books I have come across in a long time, I just love it. Readers can't help but be captivated by these little Wee Folk and their magical world. The book contains lots of ideas for different characters, including ideas for both boys and girls. Also included are other projects made from felt like badges and purses that are equally enchanting. I can't wait to start some projects from this book for my children. Highly recommend this book to other craft people, particularly hand sewers.

Felt Wee Folk is a lovely book filled with photographs and easy directions for making pipe cleaner figures, some as small as 1.5 inches. My daughter loves playing with the flower fairies I've made for her. There are other felt projects as well, although I haven't tried any yet. I'd give the book five stars if I didn't have to flip back and forth across a couple pages for directions, but the more dolls I make, the less I have to do that.

THE QUILTING BIBLE

Review Date: 2009-07-02
I am new to quilting & have found this to be an invaluable reference! I took a quilting class in a store & even the teacher liked it. She would explain things in class & if I forgot what she said I could check it in the book. For instance she taught us how to make a "quilter's knot". When I got home I forgot how so I went to the index & found the instructions on page 6-2. Beautiful color displays with explicit instructions. I then copied this page & sent it to my cousin who has been quilting for 6 years & she really liked it. She in fact did not know about a "quilters knot" (probably because she is firstly a sewer). Since I am a beginner I have not used any of the charts, etc. One reviewer stated there was wrong information in this area.

The pictures of various types of quilts are reason enough to buy the book. Two really pretty picture sections are "QUILT BLOCK GALLERY" on page 3-11. It shows all types of quilt styles. Also, "QUILTING DESIGN GALLERY" on page 11-17 shows 47 quilt photos that you can use as reference to design your quilt.

I actually did not buy the book from Amazon because I wanted to see it before I bought it. I can save you a trip to the bookstore & say that this is THE BOOK to have on your bookshelf. BUY IT NOW!

I've been teaching beginning quilting for years and this is the best book I have found as a recommended resource for my students. It takes them from the basics all the way into more advanced techniques. BHG always does a great job with photography and it shows in this book. The step-by-step photos are a great help to more visual learners.
The binding technique on page 11-7 makes mitering the two ends together so easy. My students can refer back to this, and all the other techniques I teach, long after the class, to refresh their memory. We even have the spine cut off and have it spiral bound for a lay flat, easy to read, book.

Useful but flawed basic encyclopaedia

Review Date: 2008-09-25
I've been quilting (self-taught) for 18 months and bought this book about 6 months ago, so I'm not quite a beginner but still have plenty to learn. I use it as a reference work, but unfortunately I have learnt to use it with a pinch of salt. I made the mistake of using one of the tables for calculating how to cut a certain type of triangle. Thankfully I double-checked with a template before cutting my fabric, as the formula given was wrong, although I then had all the trouble of cutting fabric with two sets of markings on it. The formula for calculating the width of binding is also incorrect. I've not checked any of the other formulae, but I'm extremely wary of using them now.

This book has no overall contents section, which is awkward, although there is a contents page for each section at its start. It is divided into the following sections, and the pages are renumbered at the start of each section, e.g. 8-12, which again is an awkward way to do things, although it is useful that the section name is printed in the outside margin of every page.

1. Tools, notions and supplies
2. Fabric and colour
3. Planning pieced blocks
4. Planning the quilt top
5. Cutting
6. Hand piecing
7. Machine piecing
8. Hand and machine applique
9. Assembling the quilt top
10. Basting and backing
11. Hand and machine quilting
12. Binding and finishing
13. Specialty techniques
14. Glossary
15. Index

As you can see, this covers the whole process of traditional quilting fairly well, and as it's a long book, there is plenty in it. There are oodles of nice clear photographs, good headings, diagrams, charts and formulae (which may not be correct!), separate instructions for left-handers where applicable, and spaces at the end of every section where you may write your own notes.

Where techniques are discussed (a few aren't - bargello quilting gets a paragraph saying what it is but no instructions, for instance), they are usually discussed thoroughly. There are usually several ways to do anything in quilting, and a lot of the time this book will describe several options, though not always. For instance, it gives a variety of options for joining multiple pieces to make backing, but only one option (and not the most popular either) for joining two pieces of batting. I'm not wildly happy with the basting instructions generally, though they're certainly useful when used alongside other instructions. I also feel that a lot more space should be given to hand-quilting technique, where only one page is devoted to the all-important quilting running stitch. I can't judge the sections on machine-sewing as I have yet to learn how to use a sewing machine, but as is usual for quilting books, machine-sewing is assumed to be the norm. Where it comes into its own is in giving a lot more information about hand-sewing than most quilting books these days do, and as a hand-sewer I'm extremely grateful for that.

There are very few troubleshooting sections, which is a particular loss in a book which is giving out incorrect formulae: if you follow this book's instructions to the letter, you're going to run into problems. There are definitely gaps. For example, the only method suggested for marking up fabrics is to use templates, when many quilters prefer to calculate the piece sizes and draw them straight onto the fabric using an acrylic ruler (a method that is, in my experience, far more accurate and far quicker). It doesn't even discuss making sure your shapes will fit together the best way possible to use up the minimum fabric (personally I always sketch them out on graph paper first), let alone how to calculate how much fabric to buy.

The most serious omission is that this book is only interested in old-fashioned quilting. If you plan to spend your entire quilting career sticking to traditional geometric patterns based on repeated square blocks, you'll be fine - as long as you don't expect the book to teach you how to make any of these blocks! Some basic units, such as flying geese or a square within a square, are covered, and there are discussions on the grid underlying blocks as well as five pages of pictures of traditional blocks (a couple of which I'd say are wrong), but nowhere does the book walk you through putting together a traditional block. This is unusual in quilting books aimed at beginners, which usually give instructions for a few blocks and indicate the level of difficulty for each. If your only source of quilting instructions is this book, half of the blocks in the gallery will be beyond you, since there is absolutely no information on how to sew more complex blocks depicted such as the Mariner's Compass or Double Wedding Ring. To be honest, an encyclopaedia-style book should really have a much fuller block gallery than this.

If you want to learn how to make art quilts, or how to piece quilt tops that aren't made of geometrical repeating blocks, there isn't a word to help you. Ruth McDowell is a good author to go to there, and there are many books and websites discussing more unusual techniques.

I've reluctantly given this book three stars. There are too many important omissions in this book, and for a book that sets itself up as a start-to-finish bible, readers may be deceived into thinking that it will cover all of their needs. More importantly, some of the information is plain wrong and will wreck a quilt if followed literally, and some of the instructions give rather odd methods while ignoring the most commonly-used ones. If you take all of that with a pinch of salt, and have other quilting books around to fill the gaps, as well as checking techniques before using them on a full quilt, then it is certainly a very useful book to have in your quilting library.

The book itself is awesome it's exactly what I wanted. But in ordering this book I had accidentally ordered 2 so had to return one. I had a problem with the shipping so ended up paying for the return at the post office and had the return label on there that I had printed for the return. So when you all recieved it you gave me back the money minus $3.99 for the shipping label which I ended up not being able to use. I have emailed once in regards to this issue but have yet to receive a response.

I watch the show weekly. This book gives me the tools from the show that I can do at my own pace to complete. Thanks

I have a collection of dozens of quilting books and this has to be the prettiest, most compelling and easiest to follow. I'm on my second quilt from this book and it couldn't be easier. I can't recommend it highly enough.
