Great ResourceReview Date: 2001-10-15
I thought this book was very well written and researched. I would highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to learn more about precious metal mining in the old west. This book covers many subjects in detailed chapters that include the Gold Rush, Hard Rock Mining, Timbering, Pumping, Explosives, Machine Drills, Transportation, Power & Fuel, Fire Assay, Mills & Smelters, Mill Machinery, and an appendices that includes Mining & Milling Hazards. The many photographs, illustrations and tables were interesting which added to the pleasant reading experience.
No Mining History Library Should Be Without ItReview Date: 2002-01-07
Loaded with pictures,tables,illustrations,chemical formulae and
many interesting side notes (factoids),the author covers the gamut in the machinery used to win the metals from the earth.
Excellent
review on the evolution of the rock drill, explosives, crushing equipment, pumps, timbering, etc etc.
Also included within the 250 plus pages of good reading, is an excellent 10 page bibliography which is referenced to the chapter footnotes, to assist those who may have a futher interest in any of the subject matter. This is a must have book for the mining historian and for anyone interested in 19th century mining. In short a great book.

The non-chemist precious metal chemistry bibleReview Date: 2003-01-20
Although you could follow the recipes of this book blindly, it requires an elementary base in chemistry to fully appreciate Ammen's impressive knowledge. For teaching yourself the bases of chemistry, I recommend "Chemistry: The Central Science" by Brown, Bursten and Lemay as the perfect companion. It is by far the greatest ground-level chemistry book I've ever seen; it will take you painlessly, and with captivating style, from the level of complete ignoramus to a level where you can be fully operational in basic chemistry. I wish all my basic science textbook had been that good. A comprehension of differential calculus is desirable but high school maths will more than suffice for the majority of the content, and certainly for most of the content related to precious metals chemistry. If you are not a chemist but had chemistry classes in high school or college, I suggest you throw away your old chemistry books and buy the pair ! If you intend to make precious metal chemistry your lucrative hobby, the pair of books will easily repay for themselves as much in enjoyment as in money.

Recovery And Refining Of Precious Metals - Second EditionReview Date: 2003-07-06
Based on the author's experience as a professional chemist and metallurgist, this second edition offers a wealth of new material, delving more deeply into solvent liquid extraction and many other topics, and thus yielding much greater insight into these subjects.

Great DetailReview Date: 2001-04-25
This book would be best used as a follow-up to a first year graduate phase trans course; it's far more in-depth than Porter and Easterling's book.
This text has five chapers (I have the second edition):
1) Application of the Gibbs energy-composition diagrams
2) Influence of elastic stress on phase transformations
3) Theory of capillarity
4) The kinetic equations of solid->solid nucleation theory and comparisons with experimental observation
5) Moving phase boundary problems
These are all very detailed reviews of the topic. Ch. 2, especially, I find helpful to my research.
So, in summary: An excellent text for people who need to understand *advanced* phase transformaiton theory.

Principles to Create Huge Value from Mineral ResourcesReview Date: 2002-09-20
This book explains the why, how and who of this fundamental decision faced by mining companies. The author also explains why this should be of vital interest to governments, educational institutions and the struggling shareholders of mining companies. Consequently, this book should be in the hands of anyone involved in, or aspiring to, management at either the operating or corporate level of the minerals industry.
Juan P. Camus explains in plain language the theory and use of cutoff grade optimization techniques developed by people such as Kenneth F. Lane, author of the highly regarded book, "The Economic Definition of Ore". The foreword is written by Ken Lane, who lays a challenge for the next book on this fascinating and fundamental aspect of our industry.
The real-life examples, based upon Juan's personal experience, illustrate how these optimization tools helped create huge value from mineral resources. Following the successful application of these principles of optimization within Codelco, the CEO of the world's largest copper producer is quoted as saying, "In the past, we were doing things right, but it seems that now we are doing the right things." These "right things" contributed well over a billion dollars to Codelco's value and still hundreds of millions more for another large Chilean copper producer. Interestingly, the author points out that the techniques he advocates could apply in other industries.
However, beyond the tools and of at least equal importance, the author reviews organizational theory to propose structures and systems to capture opportunities for value creation, which he contends elude too many players in the mining industry. The author distinguishes between Strategic and Tactical mine planning stages, noting their different objectives, roles, time horizons, technical requirements, the types of people suited to each and their relative value creation potential. The author argues that without the proper systems in place for planning, the value of the mineral resource will be sub-optimal. Not only will the owners' be worse off as a consequence, but so also will governments, suppliers and society at large. Proper management of resources is vital to the mineral industry.
The book can be read relatively quickly, touches upon a wide breadth of knowledge and will leave the reader realizing that value creation in the mineral industry goes well beyond the familiar routines of employing economy of scale and cutting costs. As the author amply illustrates, the value of mineral resources lies very much in the application of intellect and ingenuity.
