Whether you're a furniture designer, interior decorator, or just like to be "in the know" about putting together your own house, this book provides a visual encyclopedia of styles and design periods, and details all the elements that go into a piece from types of legs and feet to decoration like fluting or ormolu. Truly an essential resource!

From the inside panel:
As Furniture & Furnishings examines and illustrates all the major items and objects of modern furniture with more than 1400 text entries and 1000 key line illustrations. The text and illustrations complement each other, so that the reader can begin with either the object or the word.

All the main types of each object of furniture are featured, together with their methods of construction, their parts and their decoration, both formal and surface.

Even more information is provided by an illustrated timechart of furniture periods, brief biographies of 70 furniture designers, and descriptions of more than 100 furniture styles.

A Must Have.

During the 1960's there was an explosion in the creation of furnishings for the mass market especially items made from plastic. Anti-materialist youth consumers desired items that were expendable, impermanent, and fun. Furniture and Interiors of the 1960's is a colorful and exciting look at the creative endeavors of designers during this time.

Not a punch list of must have pieces needed to attain a "look", Furniture and Interiors of the 1960's puts chairs, lighting fixtures, tables into historical context and fleshes them out with the ideas that surrounded their creation. The biggest names are included: Ray and Charles Eames, Joe Colombo, Verner Panton, and David Hicks. Happily, there is also a significant emphasis on lesser-known designers and their products from France, Italy, and Japan.

Furniture and Interiors features more than 300 images, many in color, including: original photos, magazine layouts, catalogs, advertisements as well as contemporary photographs. The text is thoughtful, very informative and a pleasure to read. It also features a thorough index, well-identified photos, interesting captions, and designer bios.

Time has passed and many throwaway items have attained the highest regard, and are now on display in major museums and sought after by collectors. This book too will withstand the test of time and I strongly recommend it and the other volumes available in this series.

This is a great book - it saved me a fortune because stuff that I would have thrown away I just made look brand new. I'm really bad at craft/decorating but the projects are really easy and it doesn't really matter if you make mistakes - it just adds to the charm!

Appreciating and Understanding Well Designed & Built Furniture

5.0 out of 5 stars Understanding and Appreciating Well-Built Furniture, March 28, 2008
By Global Citizen (Planet Earth) - See all my reviews

People buy furnishings for the charm, appearance or utility they give their home. Appearance, design, and style are also to be considered. Whether you're a home furnishings pro or just shopping for your home, this is a great, concise reference to understanding just what goes into what may seem to be "a simple piece of furniture."

Furniture Facts goes beyond the individual piece (although it certainly details motifs, construction, ornamentation and details with plenty of description and pictures). The book is organized with the intention of integrating the piece into an environment with the best possible results.

The first section includes an illustrated section on styles and periods with excellent descriptions that can help you recognize the origins of a design. Part two delves into the construction, upholstering, equipment and care of a wide variety furnishings, and expands to how better furniture is built, along with tips on cleaning, repair, and restoration. The third area covers interior design and how the decorative elements of furnishings can and should be complementary. I especially love the handy color charts, explanatory section on floors and floorcoverings, as well as the identifier of window treatments. But my favorite is the detailed reference grid, "How to Correlate Decorative Element." This takes you through different periods and styles and cross references them to associated styles, appropriate architectural details like walls, ceilings and floors, and how each might be treated or covered.

There's really so much more than can be listed here (like the section on fabrics and textiles or the one on flowers and plants! And don't let me forget the extensive glossary on furniture parts and terminology...). this condensed encyclopedia covers a lot of ground and most sections in surprising detail. For the money, it's a nice, almost pocket-sized, (GBC bound for easy page-turning-- plus, the book lies flat when opened) that you can take with you while shopping, or keep at home or your workshop. Even the paper is heavy coated stock that you can wipe off liquids or spills.

This (27th) edition has been expanded from its previous incarnation fifty additional pages of current furniture styles, trends in interior design and bedding, and updated dictionaries on furniture woods, fabrics and home furnishings vernacular. The authors and editors who contributed technical data, charts, photography, articles and reference material are all experts in their field.

This is a richly illustrated, panorama of contemporary English furniture makers and their designs. Several pages of color photos are devoted to each artesian. If there is a focus it is on lamination and the blending of several materials with wood, such as metals and glass. The quality of the illustrations could allow one to faithfully adopt proportions and curves to ones own designs. I look foreward to similar books dealing with other cultures and countries.
