See these '100 Masterpieces' in Allentown, PA

The exhibition detailed in this book opened January 16 at the Allentown (Pensylvania) Art Museum and runs through April 9, 2000. This was my first and very pleasant visit to this museum. While I was familiar with many of these design icons (mainly chairs) it was fun to see original bent-wood Hoffmans; pony, latex, carbon fiber, stainless wire and goose-down filled leather adapted to the human rear; and perhaps the most striking if surely uncomfortable object, the MN-01 LC1, Lockheed Lounge, by Marc Newson (imagine reclining on the fuselage of a DC3). Most appealing to me must be the Supperleggera (Super-lightweight) #699 by Gio Ponti, manufactured by Cassina. Ebonized triangular ash legs with a delicately woven cane seat must surely reward the sitter with a feeling of some early Ferrari. Stupidly, the items which are still produced are not available to try out--it is all "no touch." I flipped through this '100 Masterpieces' book and it looks thorough, with detailed text to accompany the excellent photos. On a related note I recently read and enjoyed Chairman Rolf, produced by Tibor Kalman, which depicts the eccentric genius behind Vitra, Rolf Fehlbaum. Also on exhibit at this museum are: 1. Harry Bertoia's Monoprints. He worked with Charles and Ray Eames and later headed Knoll's design department....his chair #422 is in the Vitra exhibit. 2. the Little Library designed by Frank Lloyd Wright (the living room sits in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NY). Allentown Art Museum, Fifth & Court Streets, Allentown, PA 610.432-4333, ext.10.

Dad loved it!

My dad used this book to make some items for his grandkids. They all turned out great. Dad was a amatuer carpenter, so the drawings and great instructions helped him succeed in surprising all of us with his beautiful children's furniture (which will be handed down to the next generation since some of these grandkids are now married with kids!)

I found this book in the bargain section of my local book store. Since I was thinking about updating my bathroom, I bought the book for under $10 bucks.

I like the book a lot, not only does it have very nice pictures, it also lists some very useful information. Each ideas itself is a mini topic, which the author list important information to get you on the trails to research/thinking on your own as to what is applicable to you.

Compare to other books that have a lot of beautiful pictures with one line explanations, this book really gets you thinking and analyzing your wants and needs. However, you don't get the pages of technical information and how to that some other books may provide. But some would say for an idea book, that would be too extensive.

I found it to be a nice little book that one should read before they start planning to remodel/update their bathroom.

This is an exciting book for collecters who are familiar with the wide range of Chase products as well as those just being introduced to these beautiful lamps! My mother began to collect when no one recognized these pieces for their style and beauty - monetary considerations aside. This book juxtaposes the actual lamps with pages from the original Chase catalogs. The design detail and the artist's sketches are a wonderful benefit to designers. A great companion volume to Chase Complete! A real joy to read and study.

This was such a fun book, it had many great ideas for painting chairs you find at flea-markets, garage sales etc... All of the patterns given could be enlarged or reduced to fit most any chair or other funiture. The directions were rather simple to follow as well. The photography was also good.

The Adirondack Chair: A Celebration of a Summer Classic

A unique and refreshing slant on an outdoor favorite!
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2008-04-16
I knew from the cover---a photograph of a well-worn and weather Adirondack chair---that I was in for a treat, and the pages that followed confirmed that impression. Here is a superbly written and well photographed treatise on the ubiquitous Adirondack chair, that distinctly American style of chair that one cannot resist sitting in with a good novel and beverage. Through a combination of poetry, prose, anecdotes, and meticulous research, Daniel Mack elevates this rather pedestrian piece of furniture into a position of royalty, and does so with style and flair.
For those readers who, like myself after reading this book, are so moved to build an Adirondack chair, Mr. Mack offers plans and step-by-step instructions. The advanced woodworker will find the wide variety of chair designs contained in this book positively inspiring; novice woodworkers will find the plans and easy to follow step-by-step instructions particularly helpful. Even the casual reader will enjoy the rich historical perspective and outstanding photography.

This is a great book. Page after page of Girard's designs. Color and black and white photos. Few people know that, aside from textiles, Alexander Girard was responsible for some of Herman Miller's earliest modern furniture. His furniture design are also outlined in this book.
