Great reference book

I'm not a Wade collector but needed to research a 1950's figurine given to me by my aunt. I couldn't find anything like it on eBay, so I ordered this book. Within minutes of opening it I had found my piece and enough information about it to list it successfully for sale. As with any reference book on antiques and collectibles, the values must be treated with skepticism since prices change with shifts in collectors' interests. But for basic background information, including illustrations and dating of backstamps, it is excellent.

Carving Inspiration
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2004-04-26
This book is written for collectors but as a woodcarver, I appreciate the history of woodcarving that is a part of this book. The book is filled with great color photos of carvings done over many years. On the downside, it cost me more money because after reading it, I ended up going to ebay and bidding on several anri carvings. I did note than a number of the carvings for sale were being sold by the books author.

This was exactly what i was looking for. I also bought their co-boy gnome guide. I was seeking prices that were based in reality, and this book delivered. I was able to sell some of my collection on ebay for the ranges they list. It has nearly all the hummels i needed, an if there was one or two they didn't have, i emailed them and they were happy to help me find a price! i truly recommend this book!

I inherited a gnome collection and i'm so glad i bought this book to help me sort it all out. Thanks for writing it! They are the only co-boy book i was able to find, i think they are the only co-boy book around!

Stunning Accomplishment; a "Must Have" for the Collector

What is the greatest boondoggle/stumbling block to the run ofthe mill avid Brambly Hedge aficionado/collector?
Hands down, ithas to be a lack of information.

Whether you are speaking of pieces ever done, dates of release, or countries availabe, it's all here in Louise Irvine's outstanding work. The photographs are well worth the price of the book, but on top of those is the documenting of the very complex and phenomenal merchandizing tale which is so indicative of not only the tremendous enthusiasm which exists for Jill Barklem's world of characters/stories/artwork, but this day in age in which it is occurring....ie the tail end of the 20th century.

In America, when it comes to obtaining Brambly Hedge merchandise, we are at a big disadvantage compared to most of the other markets, that is the UK, Europe, Canada, Australia and Japan. In those places when you ask after Brambly Hedge Items at a gift or china shop there is instant product recognition. Here you are more likely to get a response like: "That's those little bunnies, right?" Louise's book somewhat levels the playing field for us poor Yanks with previously unavailable information.

Louise Irvine has taken on the daunting task of identifying and photo cataloguing every item of major significance related to the community of English mice, known as the Brambly Hedge. These critters first appeared on the literary scene in 1980, in the form of the first four books by authoress, Jill Barklem. Since the introduction of the Spring; Summer; Autumn; and Winter "Stories" there have been no fewer than 2 dozen companies from all over the world with lines of merchandise with everything from China plates, figures in china, resin, and pewter, to stationery and even cosmetics in which to feature the mice made famous in Ms. Barklem's extremely eloquent and exquistitely illustrated children's books.

The Collector's Book has an introduction of the general story of Jill and how she came to write and illustrate her stories. The chapters are then listed in descending order of the most prolific of the Brambly Hedge Licensees....32 pages devoted to Royal Doulton, with pictures of everything ever available from them, followed by a 27 page chapter devoted to Border Fine Arts and Enesco, on down the list to a final chapter of "Useful addresses". Included with each book is a very helpful price guide insert.

Thank you, Mrs. Barklem, for your creativity and magnificent artistry captured in your eight wonderfully illustrated children's books. Thank you Louise, for the dogged persuit needed to put this fantastically documented and illustrated volume out there for the the consuming Brambly Hedge public to 'devour', as I am sure that they will. Best of luck and fortune to you and the Publishers of this volume. From a devoted "Brambly Hedger", Jo Ann Travis, USA

Helpful for carving any songbird.

I have never met Bob Guge but I have taken a woodcarving class taught by one of his students, Steve Schumacher in Nebraska. Steve taught us to carve meadowlarks using Guge's techniques. I entered mine in our county fair the following summer and won a first place blue ribbon. Then, just today at a woodcarving show in Sacramento I saw a meadowlark priced at $600 and it wasn't nearly as good as mine! (Okay, so maybe I'm just a wee bit prejudiced.) On the advice of my Nebraska teacher, I bought this book on how Bob Guge carves and paints a cardinal. Both my husband and I refer to it frequently because it covers basics that can we can also apply to birds other than cardinals. Guge's book covers painting in great detail, it shows how to prime your bird and then to use multiple layers of acrylic washes to build up your color. My husband got so interested in cardinals after reading this book that he has now carved two cardinals and has learned to make bird legs and feet rather than buying the pewter ones. This book is well worth your money!
