Best South Florida Field Guide
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.

There is no better field guide for South Florida flowering plants than this one. Photos are exceptional. Plant names are accurate. It is well-researched and easy to use (sorted by flower color). Perhaps it's best feature is references to pollinators that feed on the plants. Indispensible for anyone wanting to grow a butterfly garden or attract wildlife.

As you might tell from the above title I am quite proud of my professional attachment to the glades. I deeply love the glades and am angered by the deplorable condition that politicians, government and our American culture have allowed this unique ecosystem to degrade to. Americans, especially Florida residents, must be motivated to demand that politicians and government do whatever it takes to recover and nurture what is left of the Everglades. Anything less is shameful! Look for the book I am completing on the Everglades.

Roger L. Hammer's Everglades Wildflowers book is an outstanding work, both by him and the publisher The Globe Pequot Press (Falcon).

Knowledge of wildflowers is not a personal strength of mine. I needed a book that I was confident contained clear, accurate information on the wildflowers that are found in the glades. I'm very curious for any unusual characteristics that are not commonly known about species. Mr. Hammer gave me both. Example: The Horned Bladderwort is a very small yellow aquatic flower that is common to the Everglades marsh. But it was not until I got a copy of Mr. Hammer's book that I learned that this flower is a predator! It is the only aquatic carnivorous plant in North America.

This glossy paged book has color plates, a glossary and something that took me by surprise - a very informative description of Everglades natural history including habitat descriptions.

This is a book of unusually high quality. If you're an Everglades naturalist I think you'll want to add this one to your shelf.

A fine guide to the budding and experienced naturalist

I believe that this book will be valuable to the budding naturalist struggling to keep up on a wildflower hike and to the seasoned ranger in Everglades National Park. Arranged by color, the book is easy to use while giving a tour with interesting anecdotes that you can study beforehand. A great addition to anyones Nature Guides.

Bull's books on corkscrews are simply the best for describing the types, patents and prices of these facinating little devices. Bull is a passionate collector as well as being an irreverent and hilarious man. For a thoroughly pleasant diversion, visit his web site to learn and laugh. Wonderful.

Types, prices, patents, all in one with pictures.

This book is a must for the corkscrew collector, and for the wine enthusiast as well. It presents in a user friendly fashion the major types of corkscrews, with pictures and patent details, all one wants to know about this screwy subject. The pictures are great, and it is a good reference book.

I love this book.

I bought this book in 1996, and it was my introduction to the culinary arts. I truly didn't start using it until 1999, when I found myself in an apartment without roommates. This book taught me how to setup a kitchen, and provided me with the basic know-how required to make some truly delicious meals for myself. It also provided me with much needed confidence in the kitchen.

This book is a treasure, and it is truly unfortunate that it is out of print. If you are a young man, or woman, and need help learning how to take care of yourself by learning to cook this is the book for you. I've collected many cooking books since this one, and still turn to this one the most. It is the easiest and most entertaining "how to" book I have ever read.

My simple recommendation is buy the book and enjoy a wonderful introduction to becoming a true epicurean.

What a fabulous book for a young, single man!

It's really too bad this book is out of print! The pictures may be a bit dated, but the advice is timeless. In very humourous fashion, it tells the reader (presumably a clueless single guy) how to wow a woman through cooking her a meal. Unlike most cookbooks, it also gives him much-needed practical advice -- such as how to prepare his apartment for her arrival. The cartoons and illustrations further the text and are funny all by themselves (I sat on the couch and giggled my way through the book). The recipes are very well laid-out and sound really tasty, with due regard given to providing variety in dishes (even a vegetarian menu). And (as a young woman) I can say that all of the "how to impress" advice is as dead-on as generic advice can be.

This would make a wonderful gift -- funny and useful at the same time. I plan to buy a copy now for each of my sons (three of them!), to put in the "moving away from home" future gift box. Every single man needs to have this book. Oh -- and I'm also keeping a copy for myself, because those recipes sound GOOD! I think I'll cheat and fix a romantic dinner for my husband...

Donald Bull obviously knows his corkscrews. He has assembled a fascinating exposition on corkscrews which delights your eyes as you turn each page. If you thought corkscrews were just for opening bottles, you're wrong. Donald Bull shows you that corkscrews are works of art as well.

The layout is beautiful and his corkscrew erudition is undoubtable. You should get a copy for yourself. A work of art.

Why be angry when you can laugh about it???
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-01-26
I received this book as a gift a few years ago, and the day I started reading it, I was really sick, had a sore throat, and laughing really hurt. Despite all of that, I couldn't put the book down. Even now, years later, I pull this book out and read it, and laugh hysterically at what I'm reading.

The concept is simple. Think of all of those little things that you run into from day to day, things you see, things you hear, things you put up with. In the heat of the moment, or when you have a lot on your mind, they frustrate you so much that you become angry. And yet, to sit and read them in this list, they seem hysterical! The fact that they are in no particular order seems to make them even funnier.

This is a great read regardless of whether you like short or long reads. It's the type of book that you can sit and read for 10 minutes, 30 minutes, an hour, or however long it takes you to read straight through (which could be awhile with how funny it is)! Highly recommended.

Carving Inspiration

Review Date: 2004-04-26
This book is written for collectors but as a woodcarver, I appreciate the history of woodcarving that is a part of this book. The book is filled with great color photos of carvings done over many years. On the downside, it cost me more money because after reading it, I ended up going to ebay and bidding on several anri carvings. I did note than a number of the carvings for sale were being sold by the books author.
