A history lesson and a story of hope

You hear a lot of people talking about hard times these days. Hans Kunert's story makes today's situation seem like paradise in comparison with life in Germany half a century ago. The story does live up to its name, telling us what it was really like as a German during the war years. Let me tell you, it was a lot harder than being an American! This is the history that they don't teach in schools. I couldn't believe some of the stories. I won't give away the details, but Kunert was incredibly resourceful in dealing with his problems (everything from berzerk Russian soldiers to holes in his only pair of shoes). If you can think up some of the survival gimmicks that Kunert does - you have a good imagination! Kunert has lived through hell and gone on to prosper in the USA. This story will give anyone hope for better days ahead. Through persistence, survival skills and just plain luck, Hans Kunert made it. Several times he nearly gave up. But he made it.

Reading this book provides the reader with a first-hand account of what life was like during WWII, in a country upon whose soil the battles were being fought. Despite our hardships during WWII in this country, it was nothing compared to what people in Europe faced. Information like this doesn't come in history books. The author provides a wonderful alternative perspective that every American should be exposed to. If you read this book, you will gain a reinvigorated appreciation for your life.

The Other Side of the Coin is a joy to read because of several reasons. First, Mr. Kunert's style is conversational and fluid; it feels as though he is speaking to us over beers, relating at one moment what is terrible and then finding joy and humor in other remembrances. Second, his candor about how the German people were treated by their own military and by other nations is valuable to those of us who have only read about this period from history books. This is a story that only someone who was there could have told with any credibility, yet it is also rendered with compassion and humor.

F&F good as always...

Clearly THE book for the beginner and intermediate collector. It gives an excellent overview of each type of note (Nationals, Silver Certs, etc.) as well brief descriptions of each note within each type. A great way to learn the history associated with the engravings on U.S. paper currency from the Civil War (1861) to the present.

And, of course, the Friedberg numbering scheme is the standard method of referencing notes among collectors and dealers alike.

It should be noted however, that the values given for the notes are very rough approximations (very conservative). This is especially true for the UNC grade(MS60-64). There are no values for GEM notes (MS65+).

If you're looking for a comprehensive note reference with ball park values, this book is for you.

I find this is a great book for any collector of U.S. Currency. Crisp photos of just about EVERY diff Note 1861-Current (Very Nice color section in the back) and up-to-date pricing in the fast changing currency market. Also great for keeping track of your own collection. Definately Recommended!

A must have for the Currency Collector.

This is the standard reference work on United States Currency for the collector. While the prices given are pretty much obsolete in the volatile currency market, the Friedberg Numbering system is universally used by dealers and collectors alike. If you are considering participation in floor or online auctions, you cannot tell what you are bidding on without this book, as all notes will be listed by FR#. Well worth the investment!

Outstanding Guide & Catalog

Review Date: 1999-08-30
This book is a must-have for the serious US currency collector, along with the Standard Catalog, 17th edition. Together they provide a great catalog and price guide for US Treasury issues. There are good sections on fractionals and Confederate currency, and decent treatment of colonials. No obsoletes or military payment certificates. The black and white photos are quite a bit larger than those in the Standard Catalog. The color pictures in the back are a nice touch, but the printing is not the world's greatest -- many of the reds come out as pinks, the greens look almost fluorescent, etc.

There aren't many anecdotes or interesting bits of trivia, but as a guide and catalog it is top notch.

I had bought the Statehood Quarters book from this same company before, and was happy with it so I searched for one for the Presidential Dollars. I just wish that it had shown the inside of the book because I didn't know you have to have a dollar from each mint to fill the book. I do like how there is a plastic cover to go over the coins to protect them from fingerprints.

I am a coin collector and this brochure accomodates each year and mint until the end of this coinage. It is of good quality construction and includes clear sleaves to protect the coins. If you are a serious coin collector and wish to display and protect your uncirculated presidential dollar collection this is the album for you.

Numismatics at the service of History

Review Date: 2008-05-02
Holt once again brings invaluable information about Bactria. In this book he uses mumismatics extensively. The first two chapters are very interesting. The end of the book is mostly about technical details of the coins and what they can tell us. Thundering Zeus is the figure of Zeus on coins issued by Macedonian kings in Bactria. Holt shows us the importance of the details for placing a date on the coins and for knowing who issued them. For those who are intrigued by Diodotus, I and II, this is a great book. If it is the first book you read by Holt and if you are intested in the history of Bactria, which now covers most part of Afghanistan, you can form for yourself a good idea of what other books by Holt can hold as surprises for you. It could be the gate opened to a new horizon, or just a very enjoyable way to learn about the subject. Holt writes in a simple manner so as to be accessible to all readers and I do appreciate that. Even scholars sometimes need simplicity. In any case, his simple and clear way is still carrying a lot of serious information with notes, bibliography, index, all items History students need. I would recommend this book for research as well as for readers who like to learn more.

Splendid.

Holt does an excellent job of updating the Beginnings of the Hellenistic Bactrian kingdom. His book is a much needed repair of the misinformation spread in the beginning of Tarn's otherwise enjoyable book The Greeks in Bactria and India. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Frank Holt continues his assault on the deity of Alexander in this well-researched followup to "Alexander the Great and Bactria." Holt looks at the foundation and early history of Hellenistic Bactria, starting with the Diadochi. His analysis of the data - including a careful reappraisal of the oft misleading numistics - is fairly convincing. A good book for anyone interested in Central Asia in antiquity, ancient India, and modern historiography of Alexander of Macedon.

This is a great book for kids who aren't able to read yet. Having pictures of the objects to find at the bottom of each page is just great. My 4 year old gets very frustrated with the I Spy books, because he isn't able to read the lists of objects to find. With these books he doesn't need to read and feels like a Big Kid because he can work on the book all by himself!

Good book to grow with!

This is our 3 year old's favorite book. We read it cover to cover every night before bed. He loves to find all of the sea creatures and the ecotourist Billy on every page. As he gets older, there are other skills to explore, such as finding ALL of the polar bears, etc. on each page (right now we just find one of each specimen). Can't recommend this highly enough! It's fun for everyone.

Great material to stimulate young minds

Review Date: 2007-10-04
This book contains some of the best material to stimulate young minds. It will challenge their sight and memory as they look over these excellent illustrations in search of the objects in the list. While their scanners are active, the children will also learn a bit of the science of the sea, as they are required to identify objects found in and hear the oceans of the world.
The images are:

*) Open sea - a selection of what can be seen some distance away from land
*) Water sports - what you can see on a recreational ocean beach
*) Icy north - the creatures that can be found on the ice pack of the north
*) Coral reef - a sample of the creatures that can be found on the coral reefs
*) By the seashore - what you can see on a sand beach
*) Underwater forest - a sampling of what can be found in the shallow water near the land
*) On a cruise - a demonstration of some of the activity that takes place on a cruise ship
*) Deep down - a sampling of the creatures found in the deepest of ocean waters
*) Sea village - a demonstration of the activity that take place in a village on stilts at the edge of the ocean
*) Lost city - the activity associated with an underwater archeological site
*) Chilly south - a sample of the wildlife found in the area around Antarctica
*) Grassy seabed - a sample of the very shallow seawater ecosystem
*) Shipwreck - an example of divers exploring a ship at the bottom of the ocean

Brief answers are included at the end, although they probably will not be of any assistance.

I bought this book when I started collecting Canadian commemorative dollars and the book has been a big help providing information like mintage figures, images of the coins, and prices. It also gives the sizes in mm for the different coins which makes ordering albums or holders a lot easier.
I would recommend this book to beginners and long term collectors a like if they are buying Canadian or Mexican coins. I have several other world coin books and this book provides more useful information and is easy to follow.
I just finished a US modern commemorative collection and I wish I had had this book when I was buying coins for that. The pricing of the coins in this set aren't correct in this book but the other information is valuable.

Terrific little book, I use it all the time. If you have been collecting coins for years then you may not need this book but you are going to want it. It catalogs all (as the title suggests) the North American Coins (U.S., Canada & Mexico). On the other hand if you are just getting started in coin collecting then this book is an essential. Either way, it's well written and accurate, enough said.

This is a wonderful book. A great read for anyone even if they aren't related to this historic family. The letters bring to life the people and life in the early 1800's. They did a wonderful job transcribing the letters and the Author has done a great job with explainations on how life was then.

Via the medium of personal letters written between 1820 and 1867, the author has succesfully brought to life an era in the history of our early republic. She has defly connected them into a cohesive narrative. Her historical insights enhance the story. What I liked best was that it is a good read for the general public.

A magnificent account of early America

Review Date: 2002-07-02
Eve Anderson has created a most remarkable work with A Breach of Privilege. It is simultaneously a fascinating and truly authentic account of daily life in the early 19th-century, an engrossing chronicle of several generations of an amazing American family, and an eye-opening history of a young United States.

The events and personalities of A Breach of Privilege virtually leap off the page, and become as familiar to the reader as those of any novel. In fact, it's difficult to believe that the members of one family could have been witness to as many remarkable events in American history as were the Cilleys, but it is all true. From the quiet hills of New England to the marbled halls of the Capitol and dusty battlefields of the Civil War, their thoughts, prayers and fears come alive as can only happen in private letters.

Anderson has done a wonderful job of weaving delightful anecdotes and insightful facts into the narrative, blending them naturally with the Cilley letters themselves. As a result the lives of the characters flow seamlessly with the events of the time, an era in American history that is little studied and only vaguely understood today. It was a time of tremendous turmoil and remarkable change, and it all comes to life through the words of a Jacksonian Congressman, his pious wife, and their sons, officers in the Union Army and Navy during the Civil War.

The letters are transcribed exactly as they were written, complete with spelling and grammatical errors, by the members of this singular family. They speak of a time when death was as common as life, when children were lost with frightening regularity, when the horrors of war were secondary to its glory, and when the survival of the nation was all but certain. This is a book of history, authentic to the last detail, but beyond that it is a fascinating story.

This book has to be the single best investment I have made when in comes to helping with the identification of error coins. In detail you can learn how to identify what is an error and what looks like one but is not. Another great thing about this book is the amount of enlarged pictures that show exactly what to look for on all the different years and mints.
I would recommend this book to both professional coin collectors and people new to the hobby

Richard Lobel has put together a definitive work on the coins of the UK and England from 1066 to present. The information is at its most informative when establishing rarity or variety. There are many line drawings to help the reader establish the differences in many of the earlier hammered coinage of England. This is in addition to the wonderful pictures of coins that are throughout this reference.

I would whole heartedly recommend this book for the serious collector of the coins of England and the UK.

The 1998 edition of the catalogue is vastly superior to previous editions of the work. The historical information, the pricing, the photographs, and the quality of the binding are all unsurpassed for reference works of this type. I am especially pleased with the line drawings that have been provided to help numismatists distinguish the various varieties of the Edwardian pennies. The collecting tips which are provided for each issue are also useful for those who have not spent a lifetime collecting the series. If you collect English coinage you MUST have this work on your shelf.

I agree with Bill Murray (in the Editorial Reviews section) that not enough people will read this book. It is priced moderately enough that there should be no excuse for any collector not to buy one. As one who collects both coins and banknotes, I find very often too much emphasis is given to coins; very little to banknotes. Fortunately, the book does not omit banknotes. (Just a prejudice of mine!).

My name is Lee Martin and I am the founder of the Numismatic Literary Guild. I have been privileged to review many books and usually they are most satisfactory, however few are regarded by me as N.L.G. Book of the Year material. This book, in my view, merits that thought. It is for everyone in numismatics and is even a "must have" for those who may become heirs, but lack the know-how of what to do next. Senior citizens, like myself, will be especially happy with the interesting stories of estates, etc. I had intended to just scan the book but it was so interesting I stayed with it until I had read it all. EVERYONE should own it if coins are involved in their activities. I highly recommend this book and wish to congratulate all involved in its production.
