If you like military historical fiction in a story that has a beginning, middle and an end, with lots of action, tactical and weapon descriptions then enjoy this book. I reckon it is better than his English Civil War series, at least it doesn't "wander" as much. I would, however have appreciated some maps. I have yet to read "Knave of Swords" but am looking forwards to going backwards to the prequel.

Good folder for an average collection

This is a good folder to house your Liberty Head, or "V" nickel collection. I would avoid putting higher-grade coins in this folder, but for an average (good to fine) collection, this is an excellent home.

The Lockhart Collection of Chinese Copper Cash

The coin book often identifies coins not found in Scjoth's "Currency of the Far East". It also works well as a double-identification cross-reference (with numbers) for those also in Scjoth's. I feel that, at least, double identification numbers are necessary to authenticate, properly. The book gives 1975 coin values, but multiplied by one plus one-half of the world inflation rate since 1975 (1.18 by my calculations for the period 1975-1999)gives me a feel for what "I am" willing to pay. Perhaps others are willing to pay the full inflation rate. Unfortunately, it doesn't cover Annam, Japan, Korea, etc.. Also, a few of the pictures are close to being inkblots. Were it not for these last items, I would've rated it a 5 for layout and organization.

4.8 stars for this Great Resource: 5 stars for 8th ed.
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.

I stumbled upon this book by chance and couldn't believe my luck. The reason I say this is that, while I find the world of error coins a fascinating one, it is rather tedious work poring over a coin if one has many of the same date and mint to look at but an unclear idea of what to look for. Now, with the aid of this book I had a resource that pointed me in the direction of 'known' varieties and oddities for my particular year and mint. In addition, it gave me ideas for things to look at even when there was no known variety/oddity listed. This edition has over 3900 listings and is illustrated (photos) with many examples of specific anomalies and it has gauge, weight and mintage specs, as well. While some of the things listed here probably amount to nitpicking, I'm glad for the chance to examine these nits. I now find that I see things on coins that I never would have noticed if I had not found this book. I've since upgraded to the 8th ed. which is a little better but no less difficult to find. Really, the only difference between them is that there is three more years data in the 8th ed., and the additional data seems less complete than that found in the earlier edition. Thus, it won't make any difference to you if you don't collect modern varieties and you aren't missing much if you don't find the later version. Plus, the 7th is a bit larger in physcial dimensions which makes it handier to use. Who can't love a book that lists a 'crocodile on roof' or 'bandaid on nose' oddity? If this book does nothing else it will get you thinking about the coins you examine in a more critical manner.

Masonic Chapter Pennies
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2000-12-28
This book is a compilation of information regarding Royal Arch Chapter Pennies from the Masonic fraternity. Written in 1930, it offers a glimpse into the past for the collector about coins that were available at that time. The book is a catalog of the Albert Hanauer collection which is housed at the Scottish Rite House of the Temple in Washington, D.C. Since this book was published hundreds of Royal Arch Chapters have come into existence and hundreds more have demised or merged, so this book is very dated. Written descriptions of coins from each of the States (1930's remember) includes the material, name of the Chapter, the number of the Chapter and the city were it is located. In the rear of the book in a number of photographic plates showing an incredible variety of pieces. This book is a must for the serious collector.

Excellent teaching tool for 1st grade money math

Pre-professional teacher here; I used this book to open up a money lesson with a 1st grade class. Read it in a read aloud fashion to my students and asked open ended questions while doing so. The students loved it, and so did I. It was a great opener to our investigation of money, what it is, and how we use it. Enjoy!

A School Reveiw

This book was very good. It had excitement and danger. The reason I gave it 4 out of 5 stars is because at some points in the book it gets a little confusing. There is yet another reason I liked this book though. At the end it takes a twist, that makes it all seem worth reading. All the characters had individual personalities and it was fun to get to know all of them! I would personally recommend this book to adventureous readers and people from the ages 14+. All in all it was a great book.
