The 208 page, 8 x 11" softbound book contains thousands of good black and white pictures and numerous old catalog pages with tons of interesting and useful information. Some catalogs go back to the early 1900s. Major topics include tin and heavy guage, cast iron, banks, boxed games, composition animals and bell toys. There is a complete index with prices ('94-'95). A very useful and interesting reference work.

the essential book for the conder collector

When I started as a collector of commercial tokens/coins, it was suggested I bought Bell's Commercial Coins as my basic reference book. With it I quickly learnt the basics of the subject, and soon advanced to simple identification of tokens. Derived from the work of Dalton & Hamer, but more critical of what was a truly commercial token/conder and what were just of advertising or political value, Bell produced an easy to follow book of over 300 pages. Fully researched, and from his own experiences and knowledge,Bell's book is one I would have no hestitation in suggesting to any keen conder collector.

Ruth Rendell is always enjoyable, I prefer her mystery novels or pyschological novels to the short story, however.

In this colossal adventure for levels 28-32 (!), an entire city is warped out of existence by the dark Arch-Magus, Durhan the Conquerer. Sundering the realm and summoning an enormous army to conquer the surrounding lands, only the PCs stand between the legendary sorcerer and the obliteration of their homelands. But how can they recover a city and its populace if the city no longer exists? Well, warp reality until you find the impossible... a fascinating land, and an intriguing adventure.

Ever think about where a quarter travels?
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2004-05-11
A clever look at money and where it might travel throughout its life. Mostly we follow a quarter as it gets minted, sent to a bank, then travels throughout a city (from a grocery store to a parking meter to a garden center) and finally back to the bank. Math is included throughout the book, and readers will be able to figure out page numbers by the amount of money shown on the bottom of the page (e.g. page 25 is a quarter). The text is minimal, though there are several thought bubbles that keep the story moving. The illustrations are clear and colorful; the artist used photographs of money, which makes it stand out. A note is included in the back that gives more information about the history of money and specifically money in the United States. A glossary is also included.

An Indispensable Reference Work On Greek Coins
Helpful Votes: 21 out of 21 total.
Review Date: 2000-01-20
The first nearly 50 pages are necessary introductory material such as coin types, deities, denominations & weights, coin dating, a list of other detailed references upon which this work is based, ancient alphabets, a glossary of terms and a couple of conversion tables.

Following that are the actual sections which break down as such: Asia Minor - archaic; Asia Minor - Classical & Hellenistic; The East - Syria, Phoenicia, Palestine, etc; Egypt and N. Africa - Egypt, Kyrenaica, Carthage, etc; Hellenistic Monarchies - Seleukid, Ptolemaic, Macedonian, Baktrian, etc.

Not every single coin minted is pictured or listed but boy - if it's not in this book or it's companion Volume 1, buy it! This is a pretty thorough reference work and for what you will come across in the everyday market, this will certainly get you through most of what you will see. Anything more complete will be in a large multivolume set costing 100s, possibly 1000s of dollars so I would not pass on this waiting for something better. The one strike against this book is you must not take these prices as set in stone. They do not reflect the new reality of today's rapid exchange of sales taking place on the internet. In addition to that, the prices are in British pounds as the author is from the UK and this will throw some American users. Once you get over that, take the prices as a guide as to the commoness and/or availability of a given issue. If it lists for £15 - £50, it may be a pretty affordable piece to add to your collection. If it lists in excess of £1000, I would not count it out, but you may have to wait til you are rich and famous to buy it!

Overall, without spending 100s of dollars, this is the best guide you can get to attribute ancient Greek coins from Asia & N.Africa for your greek coin collection. It's numbering system is the most commonly used by collectors and dealers alike. It has an easy to follow and consistent format and is copiously illustrated and documented. If you collect ancient Greek coins, it belongs on your shelf.

Good for a beginner but there are better books to get the history of US coinage from. Also for higher grade & more expensive coins no one uses the Redbook for pricing any more. Sorry! Still it'll give you an orderly catalog of the US coin types with a brief sketch of them & will list all the dates, & mintmarks. Perhaps unless you wish to consult a weekly newspaper on coins this is the best pricing guide you can find in a book. Old redbooks (1950's & before)are actually quite collectable themselves & may be worth over $100
