This is a great way for beginning coin collectors to learn the proper techniques, and also has great details about the Statehood quarter program and the design process. I love collecting these quarters, it really is interesting to learn about the early moments in state histories.

Teaches part to whole concepts and that we are part of something bigger than ourselves. My two preschool-age children see images in the book that remind them of our neighborhood and love it. The book would also be perfect for elementary age kids as fits in beautifully with standard curriculum in early grades. As a teacher I used the book Only One in my 3rd grade class curriculum.

A TRUE GRAIL TREASURE!
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2003-08-17
There is simply no other work of this kind available in the world. It is the fruit of years of numismatic scholarship by one of history's foremost authorities on "Oriental Coins," and no one -- NOT ANY ONE -- has ever presumed to tackle the non-Islamic coins of the Orient (from the Near East to East Asia) with the historical depth and geographical breadth of Michael Mitchiner. This is the "ne plus ultra" of the field: no one had ever attempted a work of this magnitude, and no one since has succeeded at such an attempt. Prices for this book are almost meaningless: a pristine copy might please the eye, but a used copy filled with crabbed auction notes may represent a lifetime (or more) of market following by one or more dedicated numismatists, scanning catalogs for the prices realized and the conditions of coins which are not necessarily widely-collected in Europe and America, but which form a warm, numismatic link to world history. These old tomes can be like the adoption records so beloved of genealogists: A stater from Afghanistan with a certain Mitchiner number and having such a condition and such a weight may have sold at a certain auction for so much money; another handwriting records that a coin of the same description sold for so much more money at THAT auction, and so on to the present day. Whatever the condition of your copy, perfect and pristine, or filled with notes about the coins described, treasure it!

THE large cent referance
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2008-01-14
Most collectors don't need to be introduced to this referance book. However, if you're new to collecting, understand that this is considered by many, (if not most) collectors to be the MAIN referance book for older US large cents.

It covers the years 1793-1814. The book was written in the 1940's, and updated a couple of times. The author goes to great length to describe the characteristics of the different die varieties for these years. Besides the descriptions, each one is also documented with a photograph. The photos are lacking at times, but they are quite helpful none the less.

Bottom line, if you're interested in Large Cents, this material is required reading.

For a Rome freak, this book is a winner!
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 1998-11-20
If you share my fascination with the glory that was imperial Rome, get this book. You will devour it in a few sittings, and return to it for handy reference. Placed on a coffee table, it will surely convert a bored guest into an absorbed guest. Hornyak's unique method of computer averaging the likenesses of notable and notorious figures by computer averaging of coinage and medallions yields portraits as impressive as they are revealing. The brief biographical sketches are done with taste and literary skill.
