Despite little previous knowledge of this subject, I came away with profound respect for both these coins and the men who struck them. This book was extremely well written and done in a way that it appeals to all levels: rank amateur such as myself or professional coin dealer like my friend John who read the book at the same time I did.

This is the 3rd of Doug Winter's books that I have bought and it is the best by far. I have already commented on his work on Dahlonega gold and I stand behind my critical comments on the photos. Whether the original pictures were good is beside the point. We can only judge the work we have in front of us and that work had lousy quality pictures regardless of who was responsible. Intent is nothing in this regard; finished product is everything. His work on CC gold was much better, for although again no pictures were in color, nevertheless the quality of them was good. Here, however, all things come together to produce an excellent work. The population analysis, the discussion on strike, luster, etc. are everything we have come to expect from the foremost expert on gold coins. I consider this book invaluable whenever I consider buying New Orleans gold and consult it religiously before making a purchase. The photos are excellent, are all in color, and provide a succulent icing on an already delectable cake. I hope he publishes an update on Charlotte gold soon with the same results.

This is a great book! I'm amazed by the sensitive and humanistic approach taken by the author to describe the lives of these extraordinary women. He manages to make them even more fascinating to me than they were before I began to read his book. And I really like the "spiritual" twist he's put in the biographical elements of these imperial women. I find that very unique and extremely interesting. The book is also graced by the wonderful and lively drawings depicting the imperial women, made by the author himself!

This book displays a great deal of creativity and artistic appeal. I consider it like a real little gem!

I REALLY LIKE THE MAGGIE THORSEN BOOKS. THE CHARACTERS ARE VERY REAL AND LIKEABLE. LOOK FORWARD TO READING MORE OF THESE BOOKS. THE FACT THAT THEY TAKE PLACE IN A SMALL TOWN WITH A COFFEE SHOP IS UNIQUE, TOO. MOST OF THE COFFEE SHOP BOOKS ARE SET IN LARGE TOWNS WITH INTERESTING FOLKS, TOO.

Any library strong in either coin collecting or U.S. history will welcome A Guide Book of United States Tokens and Medals, offering both values and historical background on collectible tokens. Images from the American Numismatic Society's collection accompany the latest values in different conditions, while histories of the token or medal's manufacture are revealing.

A very good book which is a must for all US coin collectors. The only problem is that the prices are sometimes outdated, but they are in all the books.

The sorry and diluted state of American coinage mirrors America's peculiar hegemony. The musty old red book, a staple of the American coin scene for generations, is missed by those of us who shun day trading. Find an old copy and you will be taken back to your junior high Latin text for the quality of paper and the supremely hidden relevance of any of it. We miss you, red book.

On top of hundreds of fantastic photos the book has game discriptions and prices. Many that are not pictured are still in the price list and described there. The dates of manufacture as well as the maker and the origin. Includes a fantastic history of trade stimulator as a whole, and offers contacts for restoration and evaluation. I need another copy, I have worn mine out!
