THE PRACTICAL BOOK OF COBS ~ by Daniel Frank SedwickReview Date: 2008-11-09
would read the whole book, they would sell their coins and buy their
first cob. That person would be on their way to a most exciting adventure
of their life.THAT IS WHAT HAPPENED TO ME, and the book is THE BEST one
EVER on the subject of cob coin treasure !!!!
Best reference for shipwreck coinsReview Date: 2008-11-09
Since each cob coin is unique and bears so much information, by using Sedwick's book as a guide, a diver or coin owner can identify the period and thus often identify the shipwreck from which it came. A coin from a shipwreck could not have been minted after the ship sank. Information provided in the book is so precise, that even if only partial stamping can be read from a shipwreck coin, it enables identification. For anyone interested in Spanish colonial history, shipwrecks, or coinage The ractical Book of Cobs is a must. It is an interesting read and offers insight into treasure coins from a fascinating period of conquest. The book is an essential guide and referencework for divers and shipwreck enthusiasts, with information that is not readily available or only available after searching many reference works or auction catalogs. Value ranges for cob coins are provided in an appendix.

Good resource for the beginnerReview Date: 2007-01-12
Good Book for the Amateur CollectorReview Date: 2007-07-25
For anyone with a keen interest in collecting Roman Coins this is an ideal book to have. Although by no means comprehensive it does cover most of the coins that are more readily available to the collector.
It is a fully updated Price guide of over 630 base metal Roman coins dated 241 BC - 498 AD, with their market values included.
The illustrations are adequate enough to be able to get an identification. Most of the obverse portraits and legends are illustrated as near to life size as possible. I could myself have wished for them a little larger, but the reverse of the coins is not dealt with in as much detail. The book touches on most aspects of coin collecting without going into great detail, but for its price and size it is a nice little book to have for the amateur collector.
On a personal note for the beginner: More coins are ruined or de-valued by `aggressive' cleaning than anything else. If in doubt, do not clean any coin.

A Gateway to History and CultureReview Date: 2003-03-24
Mosherer and Qeder's _Samarian Coinage_ is an update of the previously published _The Coinage of Samaria_. The number of coins is increased in this volume from the 108 which were previously unknown by the time of the publication of the first volume. In addition some of the descriptions have been corrected.
The study of coins is a gateway to the history and culture from which they come which in this case is 375 BCE to 332 BCE. For example, most readers will recognize this latter as the time of Alexander the Great. Or consider the rich volume of numismatic material which indicates a thriving economy. Or consider that the head of Melqart/Heracles appears on five of the coins and so is indicative of the Sidonian influence upon Samaria at this time.
Though it is a short book, only 128 pages with 31 plates, I find that I thumb its pages again and again looking for one more thing, and I think that anyone else with an interest in ancient coins will do the same.
Superb compilation of all that is known about Samarian CoinsReview Date: 1999-11-10

A "must-have" book for the collector of German coins!Review Date: 1998-09-23
Here are some good points:
1. Collectors of Thalers will be pleased to see Davenport numbers incorporated in their favorite areas.
2. Numerous illustrations aid the collector in identifying unknown coins.
3. Prices appear in at least four grades for each coin.
4. Helpful sections include an "Instant Identifier" with illustrations of various coin designs specific to a particular area, and "Legend Abbreviations" which give the collector a big leg up in identifying coins based on the legends alone.
5. A decent attempt is made at listing Pattern pieces (those coin designs never officially adopted).
Here are a few areas where the book could be better:
1. Prices appear to reflect the American market for German coins which, in many cases, is substantially lower than the German market for the same coins.
2. Some of the States higher in the alphabet (Saxony, for example) seem to be lacking data on the earliest coins.
3. I'd like to see the Pattern section expanded and possibly include the numbers from Schaaf's reference book on this area.
4. Cross-references to Jaeger (the German "Guidebook") would be helpful to our friends across the big pond.
Lest I appear too critical, let me state that the positive impact of this book and the obvious time and effort that went into its production are immensely important. No other reference on German coins comes anywhere close to matching the sheer volume of information contained herein. No other single book opens up the world of German coins like this book does. Thus, whether you're a beginning or an advanced collector, this book should be an essential part of your reference library.
