Wonderful -- full of information

The Channel Islands are known by the French as the Anglo Norman Isles, thus the title. The author, a Jersey man and international banker, has gathered from his own collection, the most detailed information for this series. The result is a reasoned and enthralling story, richly illustrated with 365 pages, from the earliest times to the present. As the author puts it, "The aim of this book is to introduce the currencies of the Channel Islands to students and collectors of three distinct series; the Gaulish -- particularly the Armorican -- series, current in the Channel Island region over 2000 years ago; the French series which was the staple currency of the Islands for a millenium; and the 'modern' series, current for the last 200 years. These three subjects are bound together by the history of the Islands, of France and of Britain; and throughout the later narrative it will also be seen that British currency plays it part." This is the one book a collector must own to study this series.

I agree with the reviewer from Michigan. This is an amazing book -- very thoughtful, and thought-provoking with first-rate writing. I lost my own father a few years ago, so I found much to relate to here -- how the loss of a parent affects one, but also the evaluation of one's own life and character such an event sparks. After reading this book, one gains an entirely new perspective of the role of money in our lives -- how it indeed define us and our relationship to and with just about everything. An interesting and useful book for anyone facing the loss of a parent, and for all Baby Boomers finally accepting the need to grow up. (BTW -- This book is not as somber as it may sound -- the stories about coin collectors and their foibles are hysterical!)

An evocative work of uncommon wisdom

In early 1998, Don Nichols began returning to Iowa from his life and job in Washington, DC, to be with his dying father and to oversee his parents' investments. A veteran investor who'd written eight personal finance books, Nichols found that managing the portfolio entrusted to him brought a larger understanding of money and mortality, family, love, his job at the U.S. Mint, and life choices he'd made.

Sad, funny, searching, and also financially savvy, "Currency of the Heart" is about the dimensions of investing, rediscovering family, honoring promises, the parting of a father and son, and a middle-aged son's new bond with an aging mother.

The review at Salon.com says it all: "The result is brilliant -- a book that is poetic in its prose, profound and yet effortlessly readable, a book that is full of humor and sorrow, confusion and loss and pride and joy. Time spent in Donald Nichols' head will simultaneously make you want to call your father, count your pennies, investigate whether you should be putting money in Treasury bonds, and wonder what kind of person, really, you are ... "Currency of the Heart" transcends a pathetic genre and delivers a masterpiece."

This book was great for introducing the dime to young children. There was valuable info on the coin, but the text was not overwhelming for young learners. It definately is geared for kindergarten and first graders!

Great resource for kids and libraries!

I love this entire series of books. As a elementary school Media Specialist, I am constantly on the look-out out for excellent resources for students and teachers! This series offers large type, photographs to illustrate the content, information at a lower reading level -- but the information contained is exactly what students need to know! Close-up pictures of the back and front of the coins are especially nice!

These books are ideal for students with an interest in money; reading specialists in schools; and elementary media centers.

The only drawback is that I can only find the series in paperback, and not library or hardcover editions.

This is an outstanding book, in terms of both photography, and the history it presents. The book has photography of some of the most beautiful, and highly rare Greek coins; including some of the most elusive of the Hellenistic portraiture. I would highly recommend this book to any Greek collector or history buff.

I purchased this collector kids guide for the 50 state quarters. It is a complete collection 1999-2008 state quarters. What I liked best about this handbook is that you not only display the quarters attached to each state page, but you learn many fun facts and trivia about the 50 states. There are even some games and puzzles. The problem is being able to purchase more of them...

It is one of the best things I ever got for my children. All of a sudden, they have an interest in geography. They are learning which states are where and in what relation to each other they are. This is a wonderful learning aid disguised as a fun thing.

Although my book is the 1991 version, it is very informative, and is a wonderful reference guide to all badges of the Canadian Infantry. The 1991 version also had what the badge was worth in that year. During my search on Amazon I see that the last version was 1996, I think the only difference would the change of worth for each badge.

Good Money; Great Storytelling
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2008-09-04
The scene: Birmingham, England, in the steamy, sooty grip of the Industrial Revolution. George Selgin tells the "riveting" tale of a group of eccentric entrepreneurs who take on not only each other, but the Royal Mint and the British Crown in their bids to supply a burgeoning working class with desperately needed copper and silver coins. The result: a yarn as colorfully amusing as one of Dickens' more ambitious novels, but entirely true, and one that offers up an economics lesson to boot: namely, that good money really does drive out bad--that is, as long as governments stay out of it (as soon as they don't Gersham's Law kicks in). If you love a great story, if you adore larger-than-life characters, if you put a premium on fine prose, do yourself a favor and buy Good Money. It will be well worth yours.

A Challenge to Central Bankers
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2008-08-04
Despite it's seemingly specialized, historical subject, Good Money is really both very topical and very important. The story it tells--of private coinage during the Industrial Revolution--directly challenges the conventional wisdom that's at the foundation of all modern monetary systems, namely, the belief that only government's are fit to supply coins and paper money. Selgin shows that this was far from being the case in 18th-century England. There the government proved itself perfectly unfit to coin money, until private mints showed it how to do its job right! The story of how they designed the world's first successful industrial-scale coinage system, and of how the government ultimately put them out of business, is absolutely spellbinding! No one who reads it can ever look at a central bank or government-run mint without wondering how much better off the world might have been without it!

Great attribution reference

Review Date: 2001-01-20
This is an essential reference for any collector of ancient Greek coinage - this volume is the 1st volume of a 2 volume set. This volume covers the "European" Greek coins, the 2nd volume is Asia Minor and African Greek coins. It is 356 pages long in total, 40 pages of introductory material which includes an illustrated history of Greek coinage, a showing of several different denominations, deities and helps for dating and various archaic alphabets and some more specialized books that were used in composing this handy reference.

The geographical areas covered are: Spain, Gaul, Britain, the Celts of Central Europe and Asia Minor, Italy, Sicily, Northern Greece, Illyria & Central Greece, Peloponesia, the Cycladic isles and Crete. There are 3,395 coins listed in volume one and 1500 pictured. There are also maps of all the aforementioned areas at the beginning of each chapter.

Not every single coin minted is pictured or listed but boy - if it's not in this book or it's companion Volume 2, buy it! This is a pretty thorough reference work and for what you will come across in the everyday market, this will certainly get you through most of what you will see. Anything more complete will be in a large multivolume set costing several hundred or possibly a couple thousands of dollars so I would not pass on this book waiting for something better. I also would not count on finding an internet site or software program anytime soon that will prove to fill this need. The one strike against this book is you must not take these prices as set in stone. They do not reflect the new reality of today's rapid exchange of sales taking place on the internet. In addition to that, the prices are in British pounds as the author is from the UK and this will throw some American users. Once you get over that, take the prices as a guide as to the commoness and/or availability of a given issue. If it lists for £15 - £50, it may be a pretty affordable piece to add to your collection. If it lists in excess of £1000, I would not count it out, but you may have to save a substantial amount of money to afford it.

Overall, without spending 100s of dollars, this is the best guide you can get to attribute ancient Greek coins from Europe for your greek coin collection. It's numbering system is the most commonly used by collectors and dealers alike. It has an easy to follow and consistent format and is copiously illustrated and documented. If you collect ancient Greek coins, it belongs on your shelf.

This is a great work on European (ancient) Greek coins. It has photos of many of the coins listed here, as well as brief descriptions of the features. Although the values are listed in British pounds, it gives you an idea of relative prices. Very important reference work for the collector of ancient Greek coins!

As a newcommer to collecting notgeld, I found this edition to be
a "must have" if you are to understand what collecting notgeld is
about. It contains an excellent introduction about the subject, and goes on to explain how to collect notgeld, and what different types of notgeld are availible. The alphabetical listings of countries and towns are very helpful, as are the footnote explainations on each page. Highly recommended.

An excellent reference to all kinds of Notgeld from many countries.
Table of Contents
* Introduction
* Issuing Cities: Alphabetical by Countries
* Periodical Abbreviations
* Bibliography
* Country Abbreviations
* Issuing Cities Alphabetical

The introduction gives a fairly thorough explanation of notgeld in English and German. The book is designed as a checklist with a box to mark off as you find what you want. It makes no pretence to pricing. The Bibliography is extensive enough to be worth the book alone.
